  1. You said it. The cost of the food is outrageous. I must confess I skip meals constantly and I practically live on popcorn and baked potatoes. The only time I eat 3 meals a day is when I am on dayshift, I feel like I need to be alert on the job (ICU and all, yikes). I ration my cornflakes. I tried the organic rice krispies, they were very anemic so I...
  2. Ok, all good suggestions. A little more about the place (Calgarians may be familiar with the Highwood Room). It is at a dining room that is run by the local college, the students are in cullinary school and are student/apprentice chefs (whatever you call it). I went there for a Christmas dinner. I called in advance, they said it was no problem. When...
  3. I just got an invitation to a childhood friend's wedding. Of course I am thrilled for her and will be attending. On the reply card, there is a place to check off your dinner (beef, chicken, salmon, child) preference. I have eaten at the place they are having the reception and they were quite accommodating to my needs. Would it be totally tacky to check...
  4. I had a stone in one of my salivary glands many years ago. It was totally weird, it was a bit painful because the saliva was still being produced but couldn't get out. It was a little stone (just like a kidney stone, except in the salivary duct), and after about 2-3 days it popped out and it was like instant relief, though rather an odd sensation to have...
  5. Yeah, as far as I know. I have hayfever and I get hives on my mouth if I eat uncooked cherries/peaches/nectarines etc, but that's it. The allergies probably go along with just have a whacked out immune system.
  6. My 7 year old put on a big show, too. They were great in the ACH outpatient lab, but they had to get this very large man to come and hold her arm straight. What a production! My 5 year old would have been mostly fine (a little teary), but her sister's antics really set her off.
  7. I had my daughters tested, ages 5 and 7. It was not a lot of fun, let me tell you, but I was very happy when results came back negative. While I've been warned they could still be triggered later in life, it is very unlikely. I will watch them for symptoms and have them rechecked if necessary. It makes me feel much better knowing they can be normal kids...
  8. Is that what's known as a "brain fart"????? Sorry, don't mean to make light of anyone with abnormalities on a brain MRI, but I just couldn't help myself.............
  9. I only take Imovane. It's a sleeping pill, and I never take it at night. I only take it during the day when I am trying to sleep after the night shift. I had such fractured sleep for so many years, running my kids to preschool etc, and getting only maybe 4-5 hours a "day" of sleep, my body is totally screwed now. Doesn't help that my bedroom faces south...
  10. If you like your cereal in the morning, I recommend Nature's Path cornflakes. I'm was never big on cornflakes before (would much rather have rasin bran, yum), but I find actually quite palatable. Good luck tomorrow! Pack your meals for work as I can pretty much assure you the hospital cafeteria can't accommodate your needs. At least the cafeteria where...
  11. I'm not sure if gluten itself affects the fetus (as in, I don't know if gluten crosses the placenta and circulates into the developing fetus). However, if you do have Celiac Disease and you are not on your diet, you are at risk for serious nutritional deficiencies for both yourself and your baby. The fetus will leach off you first, leaving you more deficient...
  12. This is no doubt a stupid question, but what is vegetable spread??? I (used to) bake a lot and I've never heard of such a thing. Is it the same as shortening?? I'm all for butter too. Soft margarine never turns out (too much water content) and hard margarine is worse for you health wise than butter. Besides, now that wheat flour is out of the question...
  13. I had an endoscopy. Part of the reason I did it was so that I can write off extra cost of food on my taxes. What can I say, money talks. I also *had* to know. I know you can have false negatives, but given the results of my bloodwork, I knew going in what the result was going to be. I have a baseline now as to what my disease was like, so I can see if...
  14. My most annoying symptom is that I have no symptoms. Now, most people would probably say my most annoying symptom is that I have turned into a paranoid annoying b***h that is no fun anymore. Obviously I should have read the whole thread first. I don't even have low iron, though. I understand your post totally.
  15. No they don't. I used to be very normal. I have had the opposite problem, I haven't had a normal crap in 7 months, ever since I went gluten-free.
  16. I had a biopsy because I had to know for sure. I'm not saying I have any issues with anyone who chose not to go this route, as people have a lot of valid reasons for chosing not to do so. However, there is no doubt I have this disease. As a nurse, I just needed to see the pathology for myself.
  17. Frankly, I feel like crap most of the time since I started this diet. I used eat well, what would be described by most as a "well-balanced" diet. I had no gastric issues besides gas once in awhile (like I might have to go lay down due to gas for 15-20 min once every 3 or 4 months). I had great energy. I had healthy skin and hair. With the exception...
  18. Shirley, I'm so sorry to hear of the loss of your friend. You're in my thoughts.
  19. Oh man, the truth comes out. I don't eat much of anything, to be honest. Yet I'm still a fat cow, so I really don't deserve to eat, IMO. I also am on the verge of bankruptcy, so I don't buy any special food anymore except the odd bag of cornflakes. I worked night shift last night. Between midnight and 7 am I chewed a half a pack of gum and had a couple...
  20. I love love love....... My kids Chocolate My fabulous boyfriend Raspberries My little girl in her new jeans, she looks so stinkin' cute That my friends little girl (3 yrs) has just beat cancer, woo hoo! My friends Scrapbooking A hot day Slurpees When my house is clean (doesn't happen very often) When you find money in the pocket of a jacket...
  21. OMG, I just spewed my drink out my nose!!! Thanks for the laugh, I love a good laugh!!!! OK, now what I hate.......... I hate that I have celiac disease and I'm not skinny. I think that is a major rip off. While no disrespect is meant to those who sincerely suffer from malnutrition as a result of this disease, I think I'd put up with the runs for...
  22. Agree with the above. I live in the NW and Amaranth is the main place I pick up my gluten-free stuff. Safeway recently took out their organic section and mixed the organics in with the regular stuff. Personally, I find it a pain in the butt I now have to go through the whole store to get the stuff I want. My sister says the store at Dalhousie Station...
  23. I have 2 frying pans, I love them. I don't find them too hard to clean, they are non-stick but not teflon. Anyhow, they do heat evenly and they are worth the money. I'd like to have more pieces (in the lime green, lol....my pans are older, they are hunter green), but just can't afford them.
  24. If she has Celiac, then I agree with Richard that barley is maybe just not giving her the nasty symptoms the other foods are. Then, there is the chance she has allergies to wheat and/or oats, but not Celiac disease. That is also within the realm of possibility. It's stuff like this that makes this disease so hard to diagnose and makes it soooo hard for...
  25. My parents want to go to a restaraunt for dinner. They are wondering if there is anything we (my sister and I) can eat at Phil's Pancake House. I'm not overly optimistic. I feel like a jerk because I really don't want to go there. I'm thinking pancakes cooked on the grill means no grilled food. I highly doubt they have dedicated fryers for french fries...
