  1. I think you bring up a good point that celiac disease is not the source of all our ailments! I think when you have something like this, you tend to think "oh, it must be something I ate", especially when celiac disease symptoms are so vague and affect so many body systems. Glad you have been able to figure out what is getting you down and best of luck with...
  2. There is lots of gluten-free chocolate (thank God!). Just check manufacturer's websites!
  3. Sometimes, yes. My anger/frustration comes mostly from having this and *not* being sick. I have often wished that I never had that screening test because I felt perfectly fine before, I had no symptoms of celiac disease, and to be honest, I felt a heck of a lot better before I went on the diet than I do now. My digestive system was also a lot more normal...
  4. My sister was told to stay away from dairy for a year. She is pretty good about it, but I know she eats it sometimes. I have never been symptomatic of celiac disease or anything else, so I was not told to stay away from dairy unless I was having problems. Lactose is hard to digest, and can delay healing, which is why you are told to stay away from it until...
  5. LOL, no, I have the opposite problem! I start drooling and my stomach literally growls!
  6. I take all that stuff and leave it in the staff room at work. Nurses will eat anything!
  7. Hi, just wanted to add that I bought Diana Sauce Teriyaki Marinade yesterday. It is made by Heinz and according to my Canadian gluten-free products list, it is gluten-free! There is also nothing suspicious looking on the label I am going to marinade me some chicken tomorrow, yummy! I love teriyaki and I haven't had any since I went gluten-free
  8. I think it depends what "numbers" you are testing for. My GI told me that it was pointless to do antibody testing as the antibody titre is not a good predictor of disease. For instance, if my antibody level was half of what it was before, it does not mean I am 50% better than I was before. However, if you are testing for anemia and nutrient levels and...
  9. Well, I pretty much could have written your post, except I don't have any anemia either. Kind of a long story as to how I came to be dx, so I will spare you. I'm not a great help at the moment as I have been very depressed the past 2-3 days, although I will say all in all it's really not so bad. I'm 36, dx just before my 36th birthday (about 3.5 months...
  10. Tell me I'm not the only one here who thinks that the fact chocolate is *not* banned is evidence of God! If chocolate was out of my life, I'd probably say just forget the whole diet and eat myself to death! I will have to try these cookies, been a few weeks since I was at the health food store and I haven't seen them yet. However, I hope Kinnikinnick has...
  11. Kentucky Fried Chicken. I only ever had it about 3 times a year, but when I see the commercials on TV and they show those succulent looking chicken sandwiches, I about come undone. Interestingly, the day of my dx, my GI pretty much said to me "have whatever you want for dinner tonight, then tomorrow it's gluten-free". Had to think awhile what I wanted...
  12. Shirley, I saw your link for the Americans, just wondering where you ordered from in Canada? I am in Calgary, and I hate going through US websites and paying US rates for Canadian products. I will give it them a try, call me a rebel, I like to live on the edge, LOL!!!
  13. What a bunch of butt heads. I'm not very good at quick come backs, but I think I would try to keep some sort of stock answer for such people to the effect of "I hope you never have to deal with an illness that makes you feel painfully different and isolated from everyone else. But if you do, I hope no one ever treats you the way you just treated me". ...

    ARCHIVED Jealous

The holiday thing totally blows. I have been doing pretty well coping until the last couple of weeks. I find myself crying all the time because I feel like I am missing out on so much. I have had to attend a few functions, and frankly, I am getting tired of just smiling and saying "no thanks" to all these really yummy foods that used to be my favourites...
  15. They are, and they are one of my faves. Sadly, I haven't seen them in Canada in years.........
  16. I gotta be honest here, making your own icing is a snap, and it tastes a lot better too! I hate canned icing. Go to www.wilton.com and look up the recipe for buttercream icing. Just make sure all your ingredients are gluten-free (icing sugar, namely), and you will be amazed at how easy and good it is!
  17. It's made from sugar cane.
  18. OK, I will try those sugar cookies for sure! I am also anxiously awaiting the shortbread recipe! Unfortunately, I've never been a big fan of peanut butter cookies, oh well. Jen, do you want me to e-mail you a recipe for a naturally gluten-free cookie??? It is loaded with cream cheese though, not sure if you are DF as well!
  19. Mine isn't booked yet, but I will be getting a follow up scope. I need one because I am asymptomatic. I am making every effort to be gluten-free, but without reactive symptoms, I really don't know it is going for me. I actaullyam really looking forward to this scope because I am hoping to see some positive changes!
  20. First degree siblings are the most likely of your relatives to be affected. I think the odds are somthing like 13% your siblings will have it. I was Dx in routine family screening since my sister has it. I have no symptoms, so I was quite surprised to find out I am also affected. Sounds like your family should look into screening, but from what I have...
  21. Well, I guess I am looking for "traditional" stuff without the flour!!! Luckily, I seem to be able to tolerate everything but gluten (I can even eat that symptom-free!), so dairy and all that is ok. My favourites for Christmas are sugar and gingerbread cookies, shortbread, those pinwheel things that you roll, refridgerate, then slice and bake, stuff like...
  22. Start simple! I started basically by elimination and stuck with the easy natural stuff.... like a hard boiled egg for breakfast with juice and fruit or something. Fresh fruits and veggies, baked or boiled potatoes, unseasoned meats, etc. You can do a *lot* with stuff like that is still the staple of my diet. Then, gradually search on-line and in books...
  23. This is my first gluten-free Christmas. I have dinner under control after a successful Thanksgiving. My questions are more about baking. I have exactly ONE recipe for gluten-free cookies (naturally gluten-free). They are really good, but also sweet, and let's face it, I want a little more variety. I think I can pull off Nanaimo Bars using graham wafer...
  24. We don't ever eat our gingerbread house, so I just planned to make one using regular flour so the whole thing will stick together! I will just make it on a day I am not doing other baking so I have a chance to really clean up well. I plan to do some regular baking this year, and some gluten-free stuff as well. Should be interesting.
  25. Sadly, no!! My sweet tooth is just as intact as it always was! In fact, I'm probably worse now because I tell myself that since I can't have the bread, may as well have the chocolate! LOL!
