  1. Chocolate and wine. Life is still good
  2. OMG, you had a burger!! That is the number one thing I would cheat on if I ever just said to hell with it and decided to cheat in a big way! I have dreams about how good it would taste.
  3. No experience with digital scrapbooking, can't help you there. I'll be interested to see how the Cricut works. I was gonna go get one with a coupon too, but I saw the Cricut disclaimer <sigh>. I kinda doubt they would cut me any slack, they have become kinda hard ass about coupons at Michael's here. You used to just be able to ask for 40% off...
  4. Well, his dx is fairly recent, and he just may still be dealing with it himself right now, not really ready to talk about it yet. It is strange how food is part of your persona. Maybe it is just too hard for him right now. Personally, I try to avoid the staff room if possible when there is pizza or something in there. My colleagues have the right to enjoy...
  5. Personally, I think you need to respect the person's wishes and not discuss it. While having celiac disease isn't a secret, I find it a little annoying when someone "outs" me when there is no food present, there is no discussion of food, and there doesn't need to be a discussion of food. I had occasion to talk to my former SIL prior to my Dx and the first...
  6. I keep a tub of Bette Hagman's gluten-free flour mix on hand (recipe is in her books). I use it as a substitute for flour in gravy all the time and it turns out beautifully. No one can tell the difference when it comes to flavour and texture. Most dishes I prepare that also need gravy, I often have potatoes as a side dish. My mom taught me to use the...
  7. I haven't tried making one from scratch yet. I like Pamela's Luschious Chocolate Cake mix. It's moist enough I'm sure you could cut it into pieces to make a plane shape, or even bake in one of those Wilton shaped cake pans. Good luck!
  8. 1. FIRST NAME? Lori 2. WERE YOU NAMED AFTER ANYONE? No 3. WHEN DID YOU LAST CRY? a few days ago probably 4. DO YOU LIKE YOUR HANDWRITING? it's ok 5. 9. I only think about it when I have to find something to eat. Otherwise, I lead a normal life in every way.
  10. On my way to Market Mall last night I noticed there is a new market going in the old Fanny's Fabrics site at that plaza on Shaganappi Trail (in Varsity Acres). It's called Organic Planet or Planet Organic or something like that. It didn't appear to be open yet, but it will be intersting to see what they have and give us in the north part of town another...
  11. I fantasize about doing what you just did. So far I haven't caved, but I wonder if I can seriously make it through the next 50 years or so without doing it just once. Like you, if I had toast or cereal or something for breakfast I'd probably figure I'd already blown it and head to the nearest Chinese buffet. So, I understand the mentality behind it and...

ARCHIVED Celiac Sprue & Doctor Too!

Russ, as an anesthetist, I wish you could tell the guy who gave me my last endoscopy that Midazolam has no analgesic properties <sigh>. I read my chart after the scope and found a serious lack of Fentanyl, lol. I'm an RN and therefore a dreadful patient. However, I want to marry the anesthetist I had when I was in labour, I have no idea what he looked...
  13. Hey Russ, Just wanted to say hi and welcome to the site. I can't answer to most of your questions as I'm the subclinical variety. As well, I live in Canada, so many products and even fast food chains have different ingredients and prep methods than places in the US. However, I can answer to the alcohol question Distilled alcohols are gluten-free...
  14. Hello Brittany, Welcome. I can't comment on your symptoms because I'm an asymptomatic person, never been sick a day in my life (at least not with celiac disease). However, I have undergone 2 endoscopes. The first was a breeze. I had Fentany, Midazolam, and hurricane spray. The second sort of sucked. They were running late so I let a different dr from...
  15. Really?? Where do you live?? My sister told me to stay away from Joey's because last time she was there, there was really nothing we could eat. I was under the impression Joey's was owned by the Earl's chain, I wonder if Earl's has a gluten-free menu now as well???
  16. Hi Betty, Just wanted to chime in and say that yes, you can heal in 7 months. I had complete villious atrophy last August, and in mid June of this year I had only minimal blunting, which qualifies as significant improvement.
  17. You're not silly at all. No parent wants to hear there is anything wrong with thier child. Even if it's something you can treat, just knowing they will not be able to do all the same things thier friends do, it is hard. Food is such a part of our social culture, it's hard enough to deal with when you are an adult. The fact that celiac disease is a life...
  18. Hi, I'm just wondering what wieners you buy. I've never seen Oscar Mayer in any store in Calgary, and I'm really not interested in spending a fortune on organic wieners. I buy all-beef wieners for my kids, but they have the "may contain" on the package (Schneiders, I think, or maybe Maple Leaf). Anyhow, we are going camping in a couple of weeks and I'd...
  19. Kellogg's RK, not gluten-free. I had some gluten-free ones around here, I think they were made by Nature's Path. I honestly found them to be rather anemic and had very little flavour. I finally made them into faux Rice Krispie treats and they weren't half bad after I added a 1/2 cup of chocolate chips!!
  20. If you want to keep it simple, get a Pamela's Luscious Chocolate Cake mix. It is pretty good. My DD had me make one for her birthday (she doesn't have celiac disease) because she wanted me to be able to eat it. All the kids at her party ate it, we didn't tell them there was anything "special" about it.
  21. I bought some at the Co-Op (Calgary). There were smallish, and they also fell apart when I tried to roll them. I found the corn flavour to be quite overpowering and basically ruined the wrap for me. I gave up on it and eat other stuff.
  22. That is the clincher, right there. It's in the fact that the choice has been taken away. Forever and ever, amen. Even though you do eat gluten-free mostly, it won't hurt you or make you sick if you get a crumb in there. You can grab a burger on the run when you are alone. These are the nuances of this disease that most non-affected people just "don...
  23. Hi. I've been doing this for almost a year, and I still have a lot of ups and downs, mostly downs I'm afraid to say. I've been compliant to the diet. I never did have any symptoms and despite the number of people who have said I will notice symptoms I never noticed before will be gone, I can quite honestly say I don't feel any different. Then again, I...
  24. My sister (who has celiac disease, like me) has a lot of trouble with sulphites. Grapes are loaded with sulphites before they come off the vine. Just a thought. Hope you feel better. 25. Pretty much ditto what the others said. My sister (celiac disease) was so anemic when she was diagnosed she nearly needed a transfusion. I was not anemic at all, and never have been. celiac disease can present in many ways, or in my case, not at all. I am definitely not "classic". I hope your DD feels better soon.
