ARCHIVED Substitute For Sour Cream?
quantumsugar replied to Claire's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
kevsmom--yogurt would not work, casein is the protein in dairy products, so no dairy at all. Claire--I don't have a clue.... adding a bit of vinegar to something might give it a bit of the "sour" taste, I've heard it works for "buttermilk". Depends on what you're using it for, though. You may try e-mailing the The Food Allergy & Anaphylaxis Network... -
ARCHIVED Need A Substitute For Butter/margerine
quantumsugar replied to Claire's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I primarily use olive oil in my cooking as well, but I don't do much baking. Also, here's an email I recieved from The Food Allergy & Anaphalaxis Network: "We've had good success with Fleishmann's Unsalted Margarine. Don't forget to read the label yourself to be sure it is still safe for a milk and soy allergy, and to determine if it is gluten-free... -
ARCHIVED Could It Be Gluten-withdrawl?
quantumsugar replied to a topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
My best advice would definitely be: make sure you eat enough! Until recently, I would go most of the day on only a tiny bit of food (until nitetime, when I would eat a ton), mostly because I was out all day and couldn't find anything to bring with me. I would get cranky, sluggish, crave everything, and have all sorts of stomach issues. I feel so much better... -
ARCHIVED Tobacco Use
quantumsugar replied to Jenn2005's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
This is something I never would have thought of, but... I have been sooo careful the past few months, and was finally getting away from getting glutened. I've gotten glutened three times since Halloween (none of the times has been severe). Today was time three, and I was trying to figure out what had changed. I was looking at everything, couldn't find... -
ARCHIVED Seattle--gf Friendly Restaurants?
quantumsugar replied to IrishGirl71's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
Mmmm... sounds so good. I'm going to be going up to Seattle in the near-ish future, half to visit friends, half to try out a restaurant I can actually eat at! Idahogirl, dogear... do either of you know if any items are dairy and soy-free, too? -
ARCHIVED Bare Escentuals
quantumsugar replied to quantumsugar's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I just called the makers of a skincare product that I LOVE and thought I was going to have to throw out. The woman on the phone checked (with the lab) and said all of their products were gluten-free. You may want to verify that personally, but their products are great. And they have a safe glycolic acid product, which I think is basically the best thing... -
Vitamins helped me a lot, too, but the biggest thing that helped me was regular exercise. I was dealing with serious fatigue all the time, more after I went gluten-free than before, weirdly enough. I decided exercise might help. I started with a two minute walk a day, and there were times I couldn't do it. But all of a sudden, my energy started to...

Anyone? Bueller? And if there's anyone from LA, I was wondering if there was a good support group up there. The one in OC meets so infrequently that I've missed the one event they've had since I found out about them.

Quite frankly, I stopped eating out, because I got sick every single time I tried. Nowadays, I usually have tea with me wherever I go, and if we go out somewhere, I ask for a cup of hot water (I've done this even without the tea). I also bring fruit or some kind of portable food, so I won't be tempted to eat something that "is probably safe". If you explain...

I saw that in the grocery store, I got so excited. It's so cool to see some awareness really starting to get out.

I also get angry when I've been glutened. I call them my "I don't like people" days. My roommates (and even my dog) have learned to steer clear on those days, I make it pretty clear that I won't talk to them. I've found something cool, though. I've been learning to play the guitar for about three weeks now, and it really calms me. Helps the gluten...

ARCHIVED Bare Escentuals
quantumsugar replied to quantumsugar's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
"All of our minerals are gluten-free as well as the lipsticks and lip glosses." That's a quote from an email I have from them from a while back. Which doesn't answer the question about mascaras, or anything else. Will be returning the manager's call again on Monday (sure she loooves me by now) and will report back with as much info as possible. -
ARCHIVED gluten-free, Df, Df Chocolate Chips!
quantumsugar replied to quantumsugar's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Awesome.... if they already carry the brand, but don't have the chips, you can usually request them (that's what I did). I'm so happy everyone else is as excited as I was on this one. -
ARCHIVED Mysteriously Glutened By Amy's Kitchen?
quantumsugar replied to a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Here are all the dedicated facilities that I have personally verified (if anyone wants copies of the emails, I can do that, too): Gluten-free facilities: Star Olive Oils are gluten-free, and processed in a facility that only does oils--no possibliy for cross contamination Nu-World Foods* Enjoy Life Foods (all are free of top 8 major allergens, and... -
ARCHIVED Mysteriously Glutened By Amy's Kitchen?
quantumsugar replied to a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Open Original Shared Link I haven't ordered any of their stuff yet, but they are a dedicated facility that makes ALL of their own ingredients on site, and have ketchup, mustard, bbq sauce, and lots of spices... pretty much everything you need, including (dairy-laden) pre-made stuff. As soon as I have more money, I plan to get lots of those items. And... -
ARCHIVED gluten-free, Df, Df Chocolate Chips!
quantumsugar posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
For all of you who are like me and gluten-free, dairy-free, and soy-free AND miss candy.... I found safe chocolate! Enjoy Life makes chocolate chips that use cocoa butter instead of dairy or soy. And they're really good, especially tossed into popcorn (or straight out of the bag, which I've been doing a lot ). And they're made in a dedicated gluten... -
ARCHIVED Bare Escentuals
quantumsugar posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Hello all, So after throwing out all my cosmetics (and mostly just not wearing makeup for a while), I went out and got some more Bare Escentuals stuff. I've been trying to find out about their MD Formulations skincare line, and gotten several different responses from people that didn't have a clue what I was talking about. I just got a message from... -
ARCHIVED Itching And Prickles
quantumsugar replied to Karla99's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Have you looked into DH? Open Original Shared Link Open Original Shared Link "The symptoms of intense burning, stinging and itching cannot be overemphasized" and "may keep patients awake at night". Or, on the other hand, I get some kind of itchy ezcema/rash when I get any gluten, dairy, or soy--additional allergies should definitely be checked into... -
ARCHIVED I Ate Gluten....and I Feel Great
quantumsugar replied to Janelson's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Also, if it's only been a day, your reaction may be coming (sorry to be the voice of doom here). I sometimes won't react for about 1-3 days after getting gluten, I've heard somewhere that a reaction can hit even weeks later, but I'm not sure if that's true. Good luck, and congratulations for all the "clean" time you've had. -
ARCHIVED Any Other Tall Celiacs Out There?
quantumsugar replied to LqrMan's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Depending on just how much you want to spend on jeans, most designer jeans are made waaay long. I'm 5'3", but I've never found a pair of jeans that fit as well as my Paper, Denim & Cloth ones (definitely too long for me, should be perfect for you). And... if you know your size, eBay is a good place to get 'em for cheap. -
ARCHIVED Is It Hard To Be Gf And Vegetarian?
quantumsugar replied to frenchiemama's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
That's what I did... I was veggie for about five years before finding out about celiac disease. I had been thinking of trying meat for health reasons anyway, and when I found out I needed to cut out wheat (in addition to dairy), I decided my body needed me to start eating meat again. I made myself something that was free-range, pre-prepared chicken (so... -
ARCHIVED Son Embarressed
quantumsugar replied to dwaters800's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Aargh! People can be so darned insentive sometimes, I'm sorry. Have you considered having your son come on the forum, too? Or a support group? I know one of the things that helped me the most was starting to build a sense of community, so I didn't feel so impressively alone in this. If that doesn't work, you could try smacking your BIL in the head... -
ARCHIVED Feeling Somewhat Ashamed...
quantumsugar replied to GIJane's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Answer to your question: no. But I am getting better and better each day. I was having a really tough time for a while (not quite the same emotions, but yucky emotions nonetheless); I found I really had to let myself mourn over the fact that I had celiac disease (etc). Then I had to stop dwelling on it. I would take your emotional problems as: ... -
I would love that recipie (for when my body likes dairy again). Thanks! I'm thinking about going to the store later to grab the ingredients for some gluten-free "Rice Krispie" Treats. I've decided to make what I'm calling "Sugar-Death Bombs" and substitute Cocoa Pebbles for the [unsafe] Rice Krispies.

ARCHIVED Help, Keep Getting Gluten!
quantumsugar replied to key's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I've been going through the exact same thing the past few months. I got so much better right away, and then after that initial improvement, wham! I feel like crap again. Here's what helped me: Beauty products: I threw out everything that I didn't know about, from mascara to moisterizer. I was already using some Bare Escentuals, now I use that and...
