  1. Goodness... I don't really have much advice, I just wanted to say how horrible that was, and that I'm sorry. If you could get his doctor to talk to her about how incredibly serious this is, that might help. And is there any way he can cook for himself? It sounds like she's going through denial (like a lot of our loved ones have), but since she's the...
  2. I'm slowly starting to feel better, but I'm still lacking energy! I know that taking B12/Folic Acid will help... should I take a full B-complex or just those two? And if anyone has gluten-free brand recommendations, especially for some of the liquid vitamins, that would be great. Thanks!
  3. When people ask if me if it's an allergy, I usually say something along the lines of... "it's like an allergy, in that even a little bit is harmful, but instead of an allergic response (releasing histamine into my body), my body actually has an auto-immune response and attacks itself; the response causes a variety of symptoms and lasts for a lot longer...
  4. That's one of the hardest things--dealing with family and friends that don't understand. A good analogy for your brother might be that... if eating the bread caused cancer (in people with cancer) then they wouldn't be able to eat it either. Or you can describe it as being like an allergy to food, except one that causes your body to attack itself. ...
  5. Hi Bonnie! My name is Monica, and I'm 21. The board is a lot less intimidating once you get used to it (kinda like celiac disease itself). It's nice to "meet" you, and feel free to message me.
  6. I had a tingling in my back (right under my shoulder blade) for years, and when my celiac disease got worst, it used to feel like a nerve was drawn too tight and might snap. Since it's a tingling, it could be something associated with nerve damage/issues... I'm not really sure. Mine healed after going gluten-free as well, so there is hope. Also, have...
  7. Thanks everyone! It's nice to know that I'm not the only one who is eating mostly whole foods, my friends seem to think I'm kinda crazy lately. I think part of my problem is that I cut out so much pre-made, processed food, and.... I don't really know how to cook! I should probably start finding more recipies so my options aren't so limited. KaitiUSA...
  8. Hi all, I've been having a heck of a time with this whole thing, especially with what to eat. I was doing a lot of mainstream "safe" products about a month ago... and still getting sick. Now I've cut back to only eating whole foods--I only eat meat, rice, fruits, veggies, and salt/pepper/olive oil. The good news is that I'm not getting sick anymore...
  9. Ooh, I've been wanting to make Ethiopian food at home since I stopped eating wheat (and stopped going to my favorite restaurant). I haven't tried this recipe yet, but it doesn't include any wheat flour, and looks pretty authentic: Open Original Shared Link Here are the ingredients: 3/4 cup teff, ground fine (this may be done either in a flour...
  10. When I kept getting sick, I threw out everything with gluten in it, including my beloved Cetaphil. Carriefaith--I've been using the Dove lotion, but these two sites have lotion I've been wanting to try, let me know if you do! www.dakotafree.com www.grandmaferdons.com And Bare Escentuals is expensive, but it's the best makeup I've ever tried. ...
  11. 1) Fresh bread 2) Carrot cake 3) Guiness I loved my simple-white-wheaty carbs...
  12. Whole Foods bread in Orange County is $7.99, but for the first piece of bread in months, it was worth it. Other than that, I'm just doing straight meat, rice, fruits and veggies right now. Even that's incredibly expensive, especially since I am one of those broke college students that used to live off of Top Ramen. It's been driving me and my budget crazy...
  13. Southern CA people-- I just walked into the OC Whole Foods (in Tustin) and they now have bakery items! Which means baked bread (the sun-dried tomato and garlic bread is to die for, first bread I've had in months), pies, muffins, cookies, cornbread, biscuits... And the packaging says that it is made in a dedicated facility. I almost cried when I saw how...
  14. Thanks for all your help! That's definitely given me ideas for foods, especially mainstream products. The student discount cards at health food stores is definitely something I have to look into, too. I was really a Top Ramen/PB & J type of girl before, so this is a lot to get used to (and probably a whole heck of a lot healthier). Oooh, side...
  15. Hi everyone, I've been gluten-free since the end of May, and I noticed a HUGE increase in the amount of money I spend on food. I was checking through my bank statement, and I spent $500 last month on food (and I was trying to be cheap)! Does this happen to everyone else? And do any of you have ideas for foods that will help me stay closer to my college...
