  1. Ahhh...the grocery store. I walked in yesterday and seemed to be assaulted by gluten. They had it all stacked up right as you enter the store. I felt like someone was doing this deliberately to taunt me. Once you really take note of where the gluten items are in the store, it is amazing to me how I can now skip about 50% of the store entirely. I am liking...
  2. I just bought a mandolin. Best thing I ever purchased. I have been wanting one for quite awhile now. This is what I purchased. Open Original Shared Link A bit pricey, however I think it was worth it. I made homemade coleslaw this weekend with it and it worked great shredding the cabbage and carrots
  3. At our church, we have separate gluten-free wafers that are in a separate container from the rest of the bread. We don't use wafers for most people, it's actual bread that is broken into pieces by the pastor. When I or someone who needs gluten free comes up, the container is offered that has the gluten free wafers. No one touches the wafers except those...
  4. Well, I think I figured out something. Not everything, seems like it's not just one food. I can tell you I am reacting to bananas. Go figure...I tested the theory today and ate a banana after not eating them for about a week. Yes, I am reacting to them. However, in the week that I didn't eat bananas my symptoms were not entirely gone and it seems like...
  5. Georgia_guy - you should really look into sending an appeal to the insurance company with your test results and costs and ask them to reconsider coverage. The worst that can happen is that you are out a bit of time and effort to see if they will reimburse you for the cost of the test.
  6. I have just told everyone I have celiac disease. The details and lab testing is irrelevant to most people and they would be bored to listen to the details. Why do we feel the need to explain ourselves? If someone says they have heart disease or had a heart attack, do we expect for them to provide the results of their stress test and angiogram? I honestly...
  7. Thanks guys. NatureChick - I have a new physician who is excellent and she had already suggested the B12 deficiency and tested me for that. I don't have the results yet, so we will see what that shows. Good thinking! greenbenie - I really hope it's not sulfites...sigh...however, I already know that mustard seems to be an issue for me as well as relish...
  8. Well, I have been gluten free for nearly 8 months now and GI system is working just fine. For the last couple of months it seems like I have developed some sort of allergy, likely to food. At first, we thought I had oral thrush. 3 different medications later and nothing has changed. Not likely thrush. Now, I am thinking this is some sort of food allergy...
  9. There isn't any prep for an endoscopy. Do you mean the prep that you drink prior to a colonoscopy? If so, that prep liquid that you drink to clean you out is called Golytely.
  10. Eating some now...dark chocolate covered almonds. Yummm
  11. My level started at 17, which was actually before I was diagnosed, but one more clue confirming that I likely have celiac. I started taking 5,000 I.U per day and 6 months later my level was up to 43. I stopped taking the supplements and just had another level drawn, so we will see if I back slid at all once I stopped the supplements.
  12. My first dexa scan was in 2011 (done because of very early menopause - age 41). The technician gave me my T scores right away while I was there. That is how I found out I had osteopenia. This was before I even had the worst of my celiac symptoms. It was all downhill after that. Now that I have been gluten free for 7 months, I am having another dexa scan...
  13. Thanks alot! That link was very helpful.
  14. I have been having some significant issues with mouth burning. Originally thought to be a yeast infection has not cleared with the appropriate treatments. New doctor now thinks it's not a yeast infection. I am starting to think that perhaps I should change my toothpaste. Are manufacturers required to label gluten that occurs in toothpaste in the same...
  15. afitgirl - we all make mistakes. I guarantee that every celiac you talk to has been accidentially glutened at some point. Although the diet is all or nothing, since you are new, focus on one day at a time. If you make a mistake, just start again. Dont get hung up on one mistake ruining everything, just start again. It took me awhile to get there, mentally...
  16. Sounds nice right? She is elderly, perhaps with some early memory issues and I love that she wants to help and bake for me....however....this is the same women who just a week prior was still asking me "What's gluten again?" When I asked her what was in the cookies, she recited the recipe and told me there was 1/3 cup of salt in them (opps - here are the...
  17. I use Arbonne products. The vast majority of their products are gluten free and all natural. They are sold through consultants like Mary Kay. I do not have any connection to selling these products, just a happy customer.
  18. I am about 6.5 months into being gluten free and I still continue to feel like I am coming up out of my hole. Certainly, I noticed improvements in the first few weeks and along the way I feel like I keep turning another corner so to speak. At 6.5 months in, I haven't felt this good in at least 4 - 5 years. So, I feel like I am in unchartered waters...
  19. Yes, I was mourning the loss of foods that I loved. At first, I tried very hard to replicate in someway all the things I loved and make them gluten free. Of course, this approach only frustrated me more since the gluten free replication did not in anyway satisfy the craving for the foods that I loved and remembered. Then I started to think about it...
  20. I tend to agree with dilettantesteph about the gene factors. I do think that the correlation between genes and symptoms is perhaps stronger than the correlation between symptoms and intestinal mucosa. We have all heard some on here that had very little symptoms but severe villi damage, so based on that I don't know that symptoms correlate well with the...
  21. Holy crap 4 genes Batman!! My husband also has a genetic disease unrelated to celiac disease. Now I tell my daughters the only good genes they are getting from us are the only they wear
  22. I am so sorry, you had to suffer for as long as you did I am right there with you. I likely had celiac for at least 8 years with milder symptoms and severe symptoms for the last 2 years. I essentially fired my primary care physician and she got several glares (you know the ones) from me when she asked me "Could it be anxiety?" "Perhaps you need physical...
  23. I agree with Gemini - 3 copies Holy Molie!! Irish Heart - I can soo relate to how you describe your muscle and bone pain. At one point, I was so bad that I think I could get severe tendonitis from get up from a chair LOL!! However, like you, I just got back from the gym!! Still have along way to go, but I have a great personal trainer who is helping...
  24. This is a question that I have pondered for quite sometime and wanted to get some feedback or reactions from people who have more experience that I do. My hypothosis is basically that perhaps the genetic profile and genetic markers for celiac disease somehow predict or play into the severity of symptoms that one has. In other words, the study below...
  25. I don't have an official diagnosis, however all signs point to celiac, because lord knows I have been tested for everything else under the sun and it wasn't anything else. My family and friends saw first hand how I suffered for 2 years with severe symptoms (8 years with more mild symptoms) that resulted in 7 ER visits and 3 inpatient hospitals stays and...
