ARCHIVED Depressed- Need To Vent
tarnalberry replied to angel42's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
when I think about all the things I can have, it's not really that restricted. it's just really inconvenient. and there are ways to plan around that. you're right - there are times when it can be very "why the hell do I have to deal with this?", but you are probably now aware of more options for food to eat, aware of the nutritional value of your food... -
ARCHIVED Anyone Else See Sicko?
tarnalberry replied to floridanative's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
I'm quite selfish in my reason to not want socialized medicine: socialized medicine will bring everyone towards the average, but half of us have above average care, so our medical care will get worse. I've got good insurance, my doctors have been good (and the two I had that weren't, I fired - something you can't do in socialized medicine so easily, if... -
ARCHIVED Should I Be Ashamed Or Excited?
tarnalberry replied to blueeyedmanda's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
I'm glad you got the dress you liked. And I say don't ever bother talking about it at work again - they clearly aren't old enough to handle conversation. -
ARCHIVED Cheese!
tarnalberry replied to Hanna GF LF cheerleader's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
True, it's just that I've known a number of people who were lactose intolerant enough to react to cheese as well, so without taking lactaid as well, to consume any lactose present in the cheese, the test doesn't have any good control. -
ARCHIVED Cheese!
tarnalberry replied to Hanna GF LF cheerleader's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
That's only true if it's a partial lactase deficiency. There is lactose in cheese - even the hard cheeses like Parmesan , which have the least - but it's less than is in fluid milk and varies greatly from cheese type to cheese type. Some people with a mild lactose intolerance can eat cheese and yogurt (where cultures in the dairy product have broken... -
ARCHIVED Getting Off Birth Control - A Good Idea?
tarnalberry replied to Sweetfudge's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
yes, birth control isn't something you wean off. in fact, there's one week a month you "go cold turkey" off of it anyway - the placebo pills. -
ARCHIVED *****fyi***********&Link to website
tarnalberry replied to mouth's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I often put sunscreen on when I am away from home or a sink - out in the woods hiking, out on the water kayaking, out randomly walking around the city with friends, out along a beach, at a random corner on my bike, etc. So, no, I don't wash my hands. I don't usually wash my hands when I put on sunblock at home either, since sunburns on the back of your... -
ARCHIVED Allergic Reaction To Casein?
tarnalberry replied to a topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
a true casein allergy is *not* rare - milk allergy (and it's to the protein - casein) is one of the eight most common allergies (in the US, anyway. chances are it's quite close, if not the same, for canada as well.) what you're describing *does* sound like an allergy, as it affects your breathing. because of that, however, it sounds like it has the potential... -
ARCHIVED Getting Off Birth Control - A Good Idea?

I also use FAM (fertility awareness method, and a catch-all phrase for a couple of methods which include sympto-thermal). I'm quite happy with it. (We do use condoms for backup.) -
ARCHIVED Flexible Spending Accounts
tarnalberry replied to gfgypsyqueen's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
FSA's are pre-tax money set aside for medical only expenses. If, at the end of the year, you don't use it, you lose it. (And, FYI, it's reimbursement based, not something you can "draw from" as you go.) -
ARCHIVED Can Someone Help Me With My Blood Results?
tarnalberry replied to good-trojan's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
no, I don't really understand the results. the first two things you right are the same thing, too. unless it was a typo - were one of those IgG, not both IgA? but yes, at least some tests are missing. -
ARCHIVED New To The Group From Seattle Area
tarnalberry replied to cruelshoes's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
There are a bunch of us on here. I'm on the east side. Welcome. (BTW, there's a gluten-free bakery - sunshine bakery? - at 167 & 900, or thereabouts. you can google it. haven't been there yet, though it's not too far from work, but it was closed when I passed by on my way to Crystal for skiing. -
ARCHIVED Please Recommend Kid-friendly Nutritious gluten-free Cereal
tarnalberry replied to JennyC's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
That one, and Mesa Sunrise, are the ones I like for a treat. I think it's something about the texture, in particular, but once in a while (when I was a kid, it was Saturday mornings ), you're right - it's nice to have that treat. (As for not having to cook - I made 8 dozen muffins last night (oh goodness don't start that at 8 at night!) and frozen them... -

ARCHIVED Sunburn Relief
tarnalberry replied to Sweetfudge's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
I used to use either aloe (as pure as you can get) or lidocaine (the spray) if it's really painful. what I've learned recently, however, is that the cells that are most badly damaged from the UV exposure are the ones that peel off, so discouraging peeling is not the best route to go, long-term skin health wise. -
ARCHIVED Work Environment And Celiac Disease
tarnalberry replied to greatdanesasha's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
you would have to work through your doctor on that, and determine if he/she can fill out the paperwork necessary. it *is* covered under the disability laws, and it may be worth bringing to the attention of your boss that it is a medical condition that is causing this, and you are legally protected, but first ask if he needs paperwork. sometimes, it may... -
ARCHIVED Please Recommend Kid-friendly Nutritious gluten-free Cereal
tarnalberry replied to JennyC's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
skip the boxed cereal! it's not that nutritious anyway! where's the protein? the fat? the veggies? eggs w/ spinach and a banana, apples and peanut butter, homemade whole (gluten-free) grain muffins w/ nuts, a fruit smoothie w/ yogurt (or coconut milk and protein powder, for the CF amongst us ), yogurt w/ flax meal, etc. lots of other good options... -
ARCHIVED Getting Off Birth Control - A Good Idea?
tarnalberry replied to Sweetfudge's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
it's hard to say if it'll help *you*. it may help some people lose weight, but it's highly individual. there are a number of other reasons to get off it, including the fact that is lowers the levels of free testosterone for most women, even at least a year after getting off the pill. the fake progesterones are ... *shudder*. I'm not a fan. sometimes... -
ARCHIVED Can Someone Help Me With My Blood Results?
tarnalberry replied to good-trojan's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
unfortunately, you can't use another labs reference ranges against your tests. you need to find out the reference ranges for the lab that your tests were performed at, in order to interpret the results. -
ARCHIVED Can A Baby Be Born With Celiac Disease?
tarnalberry replied to hornbeck0920's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
a baby can be born with celiac disease, and it doesn't even require exposure "across the placenta". gluten is found in breastmilk, so if you are breastfeeding, and eating wheat, he'll get it. birth can be enough of an event to trigger the genes. -

ARCHIVED Financial Assistance For Low Income Families?
tarnalberry replied to hornbeck0920's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
one of the good things about celiac disease is that the treatment, a gluten free diet, technically is not anything additional that you have to buy. you don't have to have the expensive gluten free flours or pre-made replacements in order to have a healthy diet. heck, even a cup of rice is cheaper than a package of ramen noodles (16 cups of cooked brown...
