  1. Bob's said they are careful about cleaning their lines, and I've never reacted to their soy flour. (Finding a dedicated line is hard, as they're expensive.)
  2. Burdee... I reread your post at the top of this page when I came back to this thread and wondered, with all the things you've been developing sensitivities to, have you tried doing a rotation diet - where you don't eat the same thing two days in a row?
  3. glutinous rice is just a descriptor for the species of rice - it does not mean that it has the gluten proteins we need to avoid. the wasabi peanuts I've seen have all had soy sauce, so I've avoided them.
  4. I think I have had fewer bad headaches since going gluten-free, but gluten was not connected to my migranes (I've had two in my life...)
  5. Yep. The youngest may well have the gene (which you could test for now if you wanted to, but it wouldn't really add any real information to the situation), but he may not have celiac yet. Unless it would make a big difference to take the whole household gluten-free, keep him eating gluten, keep an eye on him, and consider testing him when he's a bit older...
  6. I agree with Richard. The distillation process does not allow a molecule as large (and hence, as heavy) as gluten to make it to the final stage. Any vinegar that does not have a non-distilled ingredient added after the distillation process is fine for celiacs. Some people may not tolerate vinegar all that well for other reasons (including pH), and some...
  7. That's a very good point Mariann. I had skimmed right over the fact he's only been gluten-free for five months at best, and he could well still be suffering from a fairly major nutritent deficiency.
  8. I'm not sure that the camera would help diagnosing celiac disease... you've got to take biopsies, but it's useful to help dx other things. Hopefully you'll get the bloodwork back soon. Yes, if you do have celiac disease, you should have your daughters tested, as it's genetic, and not everyone has symptoms.
  9. that sort of response is not - generally - connected with celiac disease, particularly in someone who's on the gluten-free diet. you might consider talking to a psychiatrist. note that this is NOT a psychologist, as a psychiatrist also has a regular medical background along with the psychology background psychologists do. he/she may be better suited to...
  10. I was gluten-free for two weeks before testing, never had severe symptoms, and don't have many of the complicating factors that would suggest malabsorption (hence, there's likely not as much intestinal damage for me as others may have). My test results were negative aside from the anti-reticulin IgA. The gluten-free diet made me feel better, and I did a...
  11. Depends on your tests? I suppose you could only be allergic to barley, if your intolerance test results weren't positive. But otherwise, I'm surprised, but still believe you. :-) (The reason I'm surprised is that the peptide chain that celiacs respond to is the same between the barley and wheat. Who knows... maybe it's more accessible in horedin than...
  12. lol - "it depends". It depends on what you're looking up the nutrition information for. I believe the UDSA's Nutrient Database (you can google that term to get there) lists both cooked and uncooked.
  13. Theoretically, GI docs would look for and treat things like celiac disease (which is an intolerance, not an allergy), but an allergist would look for and treat allergies.
  14. Home remedies for tummy aches: ginger or mint tea coca cola (if you can get just the syrup, which is sold in a few drug stores, that's the important part) other than that... I'd think it would depend on the cause... for me, milk (now soy milk) often helps because I'm feeling too acidic.
  15. Mission tortillas and Tostitos are gluten-free. Actually, I haven't found any plain ones that aren't gluten-free, and as for flavors, I hear that US Doritos are, but check the ingredients as there is a company somewhere in the world that has permission to sell under the Doritos name that lists wheat as an ingredient in one flavor. Chances are, you won't...

ARCHIVED Going To The Gastro Dr

I'd vote for staying with things as they are. You'll need to be on gluten to be tested, but you'll want to find out your doc's approach first.
  17. I'm always talking about cooking from scratch, and how it really doesn't have to take a long time. Here's one of those recipes, I made tonight, that takes about 10 minutes to get ready to cook. It's got a lot of fat as it is, but healthy fat, and you can cut the avocado in half if you want. Avocado Shrimp Salad Serves 1 (very hungry person) Ingredients...
  18. Freya, With that sort of cold in the extremeties, it's definitely worth talking to a doctor to rule out circulation and other problems. Good luck!
  19. glen4cindy - I make chili all the time... if you just use regular beans (canned small red, kidney, black, pinto, whatever variety you like), I've yet to find a regular canned bean that has gluten. (Of course, you'll have to add your own spices, but besides the aromatics that go in chili (like onion and garlic), chili powder and a touch of cumin are the most...
  20. Interesting. I have not experienced that, nor any bugs in the flours, but I keep the flours in plastic bags, so even if larvae hatched, I don't think I'd find the moths themselves... (On the other hand, we get fruit flies off an on... thanks to the fact that fruit ripens out in the open air very quickly. ;-))
  21. Glycerin was originally a by product of the soap making process - made from fats and lye. It is indeed gluten free. I've not yet come across a lubricant that is not gluten-free - and, trust me, I've checked into a lot of them. ;-)
  22. I'm not a parent, but I know of many places where they continue nursing at the age of two. (In fact, WHO recommendations are nursing for the first two years of life.) You might look into what else is causing discomfort (like dairy or another intolerance), if there is something else causing stress in his life, or if he just needs time to psychologically...
  23. Take some time to look around the celiac.com information. They've got a good safe/unsafe list, including what you need to look for on labels. (The fun part is the "questionable" ingredients, which means you get to call the company. Joy.) The contamination issue is definitely something to be very careful of. Remember, in her intestines, this is just...
  24. lol! I have never been, but a friend from NM told me about the show once and noted the thing with the bread. I was aghast! (She told me to sit in the front row, since they throw the bread backwards. I was even more perplexed! :-) )
  25. Good luck! I'm sure you'll be fine! :-)
