  1. Tropical Source also has new package labeling noting that their factories are dairy and gluten free. Quite honestly, both the Scharffen Berger and Tropical Source are leaps and bounds better than the Swiss made "Rapunzel" (or something like that) that I had last week. Bleck! That SB stuff is pretty darn smooth! :-) Too bad my husband detests chocolate...
  2. My blood tests were inconclusive, and my doctor said to test it via diet. So I did a gluten challenge, and felt worse. I felt better again when I went off gluten, so that was my answer. (And she's been willing to accept it, but she knows me fairly well.)
  3. I haven't had their chips, but I regularly have their rice cakes and rice mixes (non seasoned, because I season them myself), and have had no problem. Their website discusses the gluten free status of their products. Not all of them are gluten free, as I recall.
  4. how about apples and peanut butter?
  5. I've also heard that nut flours work well for breading. (Trader Joe's has hazelnut and almond meal that looks like it's a great texture for breading.)
  6. I think that was one of the brands I got a few weeks ago (and couldn't remember the name of on the other post). I agree. Quite tasty. :-)
  7. That's my boat too. I don't skimp on getting gluten-free breads, but still don't spend nearly enough to get to 7.5% of my budget in medical expenses. (Maybe it's having good insurance, maybe I'm just too healthy? :-) Or too cheap? ;-) )
  8. Some plain fancy-schmancy European dark chocolate. :-) The kind I've been having at the moment is at work, and the one before that I've already thrown out the wrapper, sorry. :-( I'll repost when I pick up a new bar this weekend. (I get one of the regular full size bars and they tend to last a good two to three weeks.) Ghiradelli's cocoa powder for making...
  9. Here's my "family" recipe: 1 london broil (a decent sized one... maybe a pound and a half or two pounds; I'm sure you could do this with chicken or turkey breast, and probably salmon, though that might be tricker, and I'd refrigerate it afterwards) 1/3 cup gluten-free tamari 1/3 cup worchester sauce (lea&perrin's is supposed to be gluten-free in...
  10. As a food snob, I don't do much at all of the pre-packaged gluten-free foods. As a lazy ass, I don't do that much heavy cooking most of the time. (But as a good cook, sometimes I get the urge to go crazy in the kitchen.) But here's a run down of what I'll often have: Breakfast: rice cakes with almond or peanut butter quinoa flakes cream of rice broccoli...
  11. ((hugs)) jessie. No, I don't think you're losing it. :-) You've had your expectations shot down, and it's a loss. (There was a post on here a while back about the process of grieving for loss - even the loss of being able to eat gluten. It's really true. A loss is a loss, and you're going to miss it, and grieve it.) I think that one of the things...
  12. I think it's great too. I'll bet lots of people are making use of your information! :-) Thanks for the effort.
  13. Balsamic vinegar is 100% gluten-free. Assuming, of course, that you are using real balsamic vinegar, and not something that's processed to taste like it. Real balsamic vinegar is produced in a VERY similar fashion to wine, up to and including being aged in wooden barrels, and comes entirely from grapes. (There are a number of places in Italy that make...
  14. That's awful! I'm so sorry. :-( I haven't had that happen. My husband has been great about it, and other conditions that even more commonly cause significant others to leave. I know there are others out there who will understand, as many of us do, that this is a relatively minor inconvenience on the grand scale of things, and a pretty darn good excuse...
  15. yeah, I use the recipe my dad always used, as the lea&perrins and smoke flavor are both gluten-free, and just substitute the wheat free tamari for the soy sauce. as far as the oven, put cookie sheets on the bottom (or lowest rack), or put drying racks on cookie sheets (very convenient) and lay the strips on the racks (drying or oven, depending on how...
  16. Instead of fasting to give the intestines a rest, you could also go on a low-residue diet. I've been doing that for the past three days, and it ain't fun to say the least (I have always been a fruit and veggie eater - often raw), but my hemmorhoids told me I needed a break from... well, you know. It's probably not quite as thorough a break as regular fasting...
  17. Silk makes an unsweetened soy milk that is gluten free.
  18. hot stuff: cream of rice, quinoa flakes, cooked millet with a bit of honey cold stuff: corn or rice crunch-ems, gluten-free cornflakes, yogurt with jam, fruit with peanut butter, rice cakes with almond butter, fruit/yogurt smoothie those are what I usually pick from
  19. Regardless of her symptoms, if she ingests any gluten (yes, you read that right, any), damage will be done to her intestines. The body's immune system is a chemical machine, one that will recognize virtually everything you send through it, so yes, ALL gluten that can possibly be eliminated should be eliminated.
  20. After reading as much of the research on oats as I could, I came to the conclusion that the answer to the question "Are oats safe for celiacs?" is answered only by "it depends." Assuming you find a source of uncontaminated oats (which limits your selection of brands to - from my understanding - pretty much just McCann's), it appears that some people react...
  21. If you're working from pure carb numbers, not exchanges, you can just use the nutritional information on the back of the packages of flour. Also, I just wanted to let you know that many of the other flours - like amaranth, quinoa, and sorgum have higher protein and fat content, and are not absorbed as quickly. Also, using soy flour may help as well as...
  22. I put one hummus recipe in the recipe section (with the rest of my superbowl party recipes) - though that one's pretty heavy on garlic. I take a calcium/magnesium supplement from Rainbow Light called "Food-Based Calcium". It has 500mg Ca (50%), 250mg Mg (63%), and 100IU Vit D (25%). It has no gluten, no lactose, and doesn't list caesin on the other ingredients...
  23. ginger tea. for me, it's not a huge help, but a little bit.
  24. aldociao, I only know this because I'm using FAM and charting my temperature, but if you take a look at the "FAM bible" "Taking Charg of Your Fertility", you'll see that for women, when ovulation has occured and the corpus luteum begins releasing progesterone, the basal body temperature goes up by somewhere between two thirds and one and a half degrees...
  25. Diestel's lunch meats are gluten-free as well. (To the best of my knowledge, you may consider double checking with the company.)
