  1. besides vitamin levels, low testosterone can also make you very tired.
  2. maybe someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but that list doesn't have any of the standard antibody tests like IgG's or IgA's for antigliandin or antireticulin or the tTg antibodies....
  3. Quite honestly, the easiest thing to do is not cook with packaged products - or if you use them, use very basic ones, like pure rice or rice noodles, peanut butter, and orange juice. Not even spice mixes that you haven't checked with the maker of. (Pure spices are usually fine.) Cooking whole foods (whole vegetables with fresh seasonings (like fresh...
  4. Where in LA? There are PF Changs and Outbacks all over the place. (Check yahoo yellow pages for the addresses.) There may well be other restaurants, like mexican places, that you can work with the staff to find something you can have. I'm sure you'll find places, but for specific recommendations, it's helpful to know where in LA you're going to be. ...
  5. Bob's Red Mill tests their millet flour to be gluten-free with the ELISA test, so I consider it to be gluten-free. Obviously, you've got to see how you respond to it personally.
  6. I'd say heck with worrying about intestinal damage - you know that when you have gluten, you FEEL worse. And even if you interpret that as if you have a little bit of gluten you feel a little bit worse, there's no reason to make yourself feel a little bit worse, so just stay totaly gluten-free. Then again, I'm considering whether or not I should biopsy...
  7. You could give him a bit of a rub down with some oil (like jojoba or almond) right after coming out of the tub. (Do it _right_ after, as it will help retain the moisture that his skin has so far sucked up.) I also found aloe vera helpful when my hands were getting very dry and cracking. I had to use it a lot, but it's non-irritating...
  8. I got one of the 6-quart stand mixers - the one where the bowl moves up and down, not the one where the head lifts back out of the way. That was the deal breaker for me. I just don't like the one where the head hinges back (the Artesian model) as much as the other one (the professional model) - having grown up on the other one. I got the Epicurean model...
  9. I have no clue why, but chicken cooked in olive oil in a skillet has always bothered me. Makes me feel icky in general - even before any celiac disease symptoms. I can have grilled chicken, stir fried chicken, baked chicken, and olive oil up the wazoo, but the whole "pan fry the chicken in the skillet with some olive oil thing" always makes me nausous and...
  10. I have not had that reaction - certainly not when doing yoga, though I haven't been swimming in a few months. Did you clean your mat after buying it? Are you on a carpet that may be harboring an allergen, or on a hardwood floor that might have been cleaned with an irritating chemical? Is the rash primarily where clothing touches the skin, so perhaps perspiration...
  11. I just made some almond cookies that he might like, and they're pretty nutrient dense. 1 cup gluten-free flour (I used 1/2 cup amaranth & 1/2 cup sorgum, but you might try soy for more protein/fat) 1 cup almon meal (or any other nut meal - you could probably use flour, but I like the slightly coarser texture of the meal - Trader Joe's has the nut...
  12. Being someone who's had the "my brother has this and it sounds like what you have, you should get it checked out", I can understand, to a point, where your friend might not welcome the news. (I tried to tell the person, "Nah, I know my asthma pretty well," but he thought I was just being dismissive.) On the other hand, I agree, it can be very very frustrating...
  13. I did, before going gluten-free. (It took me a while to realize it was gone, since it's not painful, or for me, very loud.) (Note, mine was specifically noise from the intestines, not stomach. My stomach seems to be very shy... ;-) )
  14. Centrum assured me that their multi-vit is gluten-free. Whether or not you call it a good vitamin... I won't go into that debate. :-)
  15. How about more high-caloric-density foods? Like nuts (and nut butters on the english muffins or apples), avocados, and coconut.
  16. And for a third variation, I and my doctors (California) pronounce it seh-lee-ack. (Ironically, a lot like celibate.) Webster's dictionary sides with you, however. ;-)
  17. Yeah, Outback's got a gluten-free menu (you can check it out on their website, but ask for one at the restaurant in case they made any local changes). We went there for my birthday last year (a few months after going gluten-free) and I HAD to have the brownie (even though I usually don't have dessert). It was tasty. I'll admit to having had better, but...
  18. Uh... what do you want to do with it? Use it in a salad (green, bean, veggie, etc)? Part of a main course (enchiladas, soup, pasta, stir-fry, etc)? On it's own (grilled, baked, panfried, deep-fried, poached, etc)? Use it for dessert (oh, ok, now I'm being silly... I know it can be done, but I can't think of any common chicken desserts... :-) ) Anyway...
  19. She can still have yogurt - get plain yogurt (full fat) and add jam or preserves in whatever flavor she likes. Don't stress too much. It takes some time to learn the diet. You have to create a new habit for yourself, and that takes a while. Think how much better things will be for her with you making this change! :-)
  20. If you've tested gluten intolerant, then I'd try the diet for a while. It's not really as hard as it sounds, after you get the hang of it. And it could make you feel a lot better!
  21. Start the morning with Amaranth Flour pancakes. With strawberry jam (or strawberries) instead of syrup. And salmon for dinner. (Nothing says love like a plate full of wild (low-contaminate) fatty (heart-healthy fats!) fish. :-) ) Dessert of a fruit salad, with a touch of orange juice for it to marinate in, served with a bit of powdered sugar on top...
  22. These are the ones I've had: Nature's Path makes a Corn Crunch-Em's and Rice Crunch-Em's that are like Chex. Arrowhead Mills makes a Maple Buckwheat Flakes that are tasty. Envirokidz's Gorilla Munch is pretty good too. Nature's Path makes a Blue Corn Corn Flakes, which I was ambivalent on. And some stores make corn flakes or rice puffs without malt...
  23. An allergist should be easily able to confirm the wheat allergy suspicion with a simple allergy test.... (If you even care to test...)
  24. that's interesting, because I've got two items (quercertin and omega-3) which are capsule, and both claim to be gluten-free. I'll see about calling the companies and checking out what they say on the label.... (I've never reacted to them., but I've been taking them for longer than I've been gluten-free)
  25. I don't know about the root beer, but with sour cream, the issue is usually non-fat or low-fat sour creams. They can add fillers to help with the consistency. Check the labels, of course, but most full-fat sour creams should be gluten-free. (Of course, if you're having issues with diary, they're a no-no...)
