ARCHIVED Yet Another Post About Fatigue
tarnalberry replied to a topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
besides vitamin levels, low testosterone can also make you very tired. -
ARCHIVED Did My Dr. Order The Right Tests?
tarnalberry replied to cornflake girl's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
maybe someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but that list doesn't have any of the standard antibody tests like IgG's or IgA's for antigliandin or antireticulin or the tTg antibodies.... -
ARCHIVED Help For A Newbie To All This Finding Gf Foods.
tarnalberry replied to Gojo's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Quite honestly, the easiest thing to do is not cook with packaged products - or if you use them, use very basic ones, like pure rice or rice noodles, peanut butter, and orange juice. Not even spice mixes that you haven't checked with the maker of. (Pure spices are usually fine.) Cooking whole foods (whole vegetables with fresh seasonings (like fresh... -
ARCHIVED Traveling To L Os Angeles
tarnalberry replied to irish's topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
Where in LA? There are PF Changs and Outbacks all over the place. (Check yahoo yellow pages for the addresses.) There may well be other restaurants, like mexican places, that you can work with the staff to find something you can have. I'm sure you'll find places, but for specific recommendations, it's helpful to know where in LA you're going to be. ... -
ARCHIVED Which Foods Are Safe?
tarnalberry replied to huskyfan's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Bob's Red Mill tests their millet flour to be gluten-free with the ELISA test, so I consider it to be gluten-free. Obviously, you've got to see how you respond to it personally. -
ARCHIVED Wierd Symptoms - Celiac?
tarnalberry replied to swimmer's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I'd say heck with worrying about intestinal damage - you know that when you have gluten, you FEEL worse. And even if you interpret that as if you have a little bit of gluten you feel a little bit worse, there's no reason to make yourself feel a little bit worse, so just stay totaly gluten-free. Then again, I'm considering whether or not I should biopsy... -
ARCHIVED What Do You Do?
tarnalberry replied to Terri-Anne's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
You could give him a bit of a rub down with some oil (like jojoba or almond) right after coming out of the tub. (Do it _right_ after, as it will help retain the moisture that his skin has so far sucked up.) I also found aloe vera helpful when my hands were getting very dry and cracking. I had to use it a lot, but it's non-irritating... -
ARCHIVED How Heavy Duty Does The Mixer Need To Be?
tarnalberry replied to brdbntL's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I got one of the 6-quart stand mixers - the one where the bowl moves up and down, not the one where the head lifts back out of the way. That was the deal breaker for me. I just don't like the one where the head hinges back (the Artesian model) as much as the other one (the professional model) - having grown up on the other one. I got the Epicurean model... -
ARCHIVED Going Gluten Free ?
tarnalberry replied to SteveW's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I have no clue why, but chicken cooked in olive oil in a skillet has always bothered me. Makes me feel icky in general - even before any celiac disease symptoms. I can have grilled chicken, stir fried chicken, baked chicken, and olive oil up the wazoo, but the whole "pan fry the chicken in the skillet with some olive oil thing" always makes me nausous and... -
ARCHIVED Excercise
tarnalberry replied to cornygirl's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I have not had that reaction - certainly not when doing yoga, though I haven't been swimming in a few months. Did you clean your mat after buying it? Are you on a carpet that may be harboring an allergen, or on a hardwood floor that might have been cleaned with an irritating chemical? Is the rash primarily where clothing touches the skin, so perhaps perspiration... -
ARCHIVED How To Gain Weight When You Aren't Better
tarnalberry replied to ryebaby0's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I just made some almond cookies that he might like, and they're pretty nutrient dense. 1 cup gluten-free flour (I used 1/2 cup amaranth & 1/2 cup sorgum, but you might try soy for more protein/fat) 1 cup almon meal (or any other nut meal - you could probably use flour, but I like the slightly coarser texture of the meal - Trader Joe's has the nut... -
ARCHIVED I'm Getting So Frustrated!
tarnalberry replied to Connie R-E's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Being someone who's had the "my brother has this and it sounds like what you have, you should get it checked out", I can understand, to a point, where your friend might not welcome the news. (I tried to tell the person, "Nah, I know my asthma pretty well," but he thought I was just being dismissive.) On the other hand, I agree, it can be very very frustrating... -
I did, before going gluten-free. (It took me a while to realize it was gone, since it's not painful, or for me, very loud.) (Note, mine was specifically noise from the intestines, not stomach. My stomach seems to be very shy... ;-) )

ARCHIVED Gf Vitamins
tarnalberry replied to a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Centrum assured me that their multi-vit is gluten-free. Whether or not you call it a good vitamin... I won't go into that debate. :-) -
ARCHIVED How To Gain Weight When You Aren't Better
tarnalberry replied to ryebaby0's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
How about more high-caloric-density foods? Like nuts (and nut butters on the english muffins or apples), avocados, and coconut. -
ARCHIVED How Do You Pronounce Celiac
tarnalberry replied to LisaS's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
And for a third variation, I and my doctors (California) pronounce it seh-lee-ack. (Ironically, a lot like celibate.) Webster's dictionary sides with you, however. ;-) -
Yeah, Outback's got a gluten-free menu (you can check it out on their website, but ask for one at the restaurant in case they made any local changes). We went there for my birthday last year (a few months after going gluten-free) and I HAD to have the brownie (even though I usually don't have dessert). It was tasty. I'll admit to having had better, but...

Uh... what do you want to do with it? Use it in a salad (green, bean, veggie, etc)? Part of a main course (enchiladas, soup, pasta, stir-fry, etc)? On it's own (grilled, baked, panfried, deep-fried, poached, etc)? Use it for dessert (oh, ok, now I'm being silly... I know it can be done, but I can't think of any common chicken desserts... :-) ) Anyway...

ARCHIVED New To This And Very Overwhelmed
tarnalberry replied to brdbntL's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
She can still have yogurt - get plain yogurt (full fat) and add jam or preserves in whatever flavor she likes. Don't stress too much. It takes some time to learn the diet. You have to create a new habit for yourself, and that takes a while. Think how much better things will be for her with you making this change! :-) -
ARCHIVED Permanent Heart Pounding
tarnalberry replied to marktwo2's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
If you've tested gluten intolerant, then I'd try the diet for a while. It's not really as hard as it sounds, after you get the hang of it. And it could make you feel a lot better! -
ARCHIVED Valentines Day!
tarnalberry replied to angel-jd1's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Start the morning with Amaranth Flour pancakes. With strawberry jam (or strawberries) instead of syrup. And salmon for dinner. (Nothing says love like a plate full of wild (low-contaminate) fatty (heart-healthy fats!) fish. :-) ) Dessert of a fruit salad, with a touch of orange juice for it to marinate in, served with a bit of powdered sugar on top... -
ARCHIVED Gluten Free Cereal
tarnalberry replied to willamina's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
These are the ones I've had: Nature's Path makes a Corn Crunch-Em's and Rice Crunch-Em's that are like Chex. Arrowhead Mills makes a Maple Buckwheat Flakes that are tasty. Envirokidz's Gorilla Munch is pretty good too. Nature's Path makes a Blue Corn Corn Flakes, which I was ambivalent on. And some stores make corn flakes or rice puffs without malt... -
ARCHIVED Purchase Playdough?
tarnalberry replied to Terri-Anne's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
An allergist should be easily able to confirm the wheat allergy suspicion with a simple allergy test.... (If you even care to test...) -
ARCHIVED Supplements For Celiacs
tarnalberry replied to susanD's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
that's interesting, because I've got two items (quercertin and omega-3) which are capsule, and both claim to be gluten-free. I'll see about calling the companies and checking out what they say on the label.... (I've never reacted to them., but I've been taking them for longer than I've been gluten-free) -
ARCHIVED Root Beer And Sour Cream Ok Or Not?
tarnalberry replied to tgcatmr's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I don't know about the root beer, but with sour cream, the issue is usually non-fat or low-fat sour creams. They can add fillers to help with the consistency. Check the labels, of course, but most full-fat sour creams should be gluten-free. (Of course, if you're having issues with diary, they're a no-no...)
