  1. I live in Alliston, a small town north of Toronto, and I haven't really dared going out here. Somebody told me about a new little restaurant in town, and that the owner's daughter has celiac disease. So, I went and checked it out today, and the mother is a nutritionist as well! They assured me that I can safely eat there, as the daughter (who is around 2...
  2. Well, I haven't laughed so hard in a while, and needed it today. I am pumped full of painkillers today, because I somehow got glutened yesterday. The cards are a good idea in theory, but somehow I think that they wouldn't work. I find that in some places people care and pay attention no matter what, and in other places they won't read them anyway, or...
  3. Andi, I also think that people here are fighters, who do the best they can. Some days are terrible, when feeling awful after being glutened. It's okay to try to get some sympathy here then, where else will we get it? I would just hear from my family, 'I don't want to hear it, you're always sick, who wants to know?' People here understand because they've been...
  4. Barbara, I find that I don't digest many things well yet (it's only been six weeks on the diet for me). Right now I have trouble with almost everything raw, so I stick with cooked vegetables and meat. That seems to work for me. Green salad (not head lettuce, but romaine) is fine, too. I make my own dressing, because all the bought ones have things I can't...

    ARCHIVED Homeopathic Doctors

Oops, sorry about that, since it clearly says your name is Vincent in your signature. I have no clue how I thought your name is Richard. I guess I've had brainfog for too long, it hasn't cleared up yet! But my name isn't Ursla, either, but Ursula . I was in a terrible rush when posting the last few times, that probably had something to do with...

    ARCHIVED Homeopathic Doctors

I have to agree with all of you. Richard, you're right, you need to be careful, no matter what. I've thrown prescriptions from medical doctors in the garbage, I've disregarded advice from well-meaning nurses and naturopaths. I ALWAYS do my own research before taking anything. I remember what the remedy was that helped my stomach. It's not specifically...

    ARCHIVED Homeopathic Doctors

Richard, there is no such thing as THE little white pill. There are hundreds of different homeopathic remedies, all with a different ingredient. They all look the same when out of the bottle, though. If you'd go to the healthfood store, you would see that they sell quite a few there, with different applications. And it's not all placebos, either. When...
  8. You might also want to get your vitamin K and ferretin (iron) levels tested. They are very often quite low in Celiacs, and are extremely important.

    ARCHIVED Saw My Doctor Today

Well, I presented ALL MY LIFE (52 years) with symptoms of gluten intolerance, starting as a toddler. And NO DOCTOR ever put all the pieces together and figured it out, I finally figured it out myself, when I went into full blown Celiac disease in May and was terribly ill until October. And even then they didn't clue in, even though I went to the ER twice...

    ARCHIVED Homeopathic Doctors

There will be some homeopaths who are quacks, but there are TONS of medical doctors who don't have a clue what they're doing, too. In my community, I am certain that at least 75% of medical doctors fall into the quack category. Going to our local hospital's emergency room is like playing Russian roulette. It's so bad, that when you call ahead, they refuse...
  11. Yvonne, my thoughts and prayers are with you. I have six brothers and a sister in Germany, and it would be very hard to lose even one of them. Take care of yourself, and allow yourself to grieve, too. Trying to be strong for everybody else will backfire in the end otherwise and can lead to depression. Ursula
  12. Merika, I looked for the book on Amazon, but they didn't have anything with that title. Where would I find it, and do you know the author's name?
  13. When I broke my ankle three years ago, it took much longer than expected to heal, too. I do believe that it is because of malnutrition issues with celiac. Supplementation with especially vitamins K, D, C and with Calcium/Magnesium might help speed up the healing process.
  14. Thanks for mentioning those Triumph dining cards! I went and ordered mine, they'll make life easier. And I sent the e-mail from the site to get a friend with a celiac daughter to get them, too. They sound like a fabulous idea. And will explain things to waiters/chefs much better than I can. I have been feeling terrible for these past two days, and haven...
  15. Hi Rosie, I have celiac disease, Asperger syndrome and Tourette syndrome. Also, even though as a child I was underweight, as an adult I was gaining and gaining more weight, without any good reason I could figure out. Especially since I am very health conscious and my family rarely got fed sweet things, and didn't ever have anything white in the house ...
  16. Cookiedog, I can't believe that you weren't told that gluten is poison for you, and that you NEED to stop having it to get well, when you were diagnosed! I don't know if you are on any medications to cover up symptoms, but NO meds will cure you, only getting yourself off gluten will. So, forget about doctors (most are quite ignorant anyway), do your own...
  17. Rachel, can't you see that it is the wheat germ OIL that's the problem here? And why wouldn't oil be absorbed into the skin? Anyway, I'm not sure if it gets to the intestine, but what does it matter? It's not just our intestines that are allergic to gluten, but ALL of us! It's just there where the damage is visible. You can't see the damage as easily elsewhere...
  18. Okay, I did a little research, and this is what I found (emphasis mine). Open Original Shared Link
  19. Well, I haven't heard that. But if that is true, why would just touching my eyes after washing my hands with a soap containing gluten, cause my eyes to swell and itch for a day or two? Or why would washing my hair irritate my scalp so badly? Now I better look it up and find out if it really is too large to be absorbed. But if it wouldn't be absorbed...
  20. I haven't found any yet, unfortunately. Beef jerky might be an alternative (if you can find any that don't have forbidden things). You can buy jerky guns, and make your own jerky in your oven. I'll have to look into that, as homemade jerky seems like a great snack to take along when going places.
  21. Kristie, you're doing the right thing. Putting your son back onto gluten just for their dumb test might kill him! Sounds to me like your home will be a happier one if it's totally gluten free.
  22. Not silly at all, but very true. Here's an example on how fast things get absorbed into your skin: Somebody wanted to test if garlic gets absorbed into your skin. He crushed a clove of garlic, put it on the floor and stood on it with his bare foot. Within FIVE MINUTES he had garlic breath! When you put lotion on your skin, where do you think it goes...
  23. If I wouldn't be eating some kind of meat at every meal, I'd be starving, too. I am also intolerant to all the other sources of protein, I can't have legumes (which includes peanuts), eggs or milk products at all, no grains of any kind (tried gluten-free brownies yesterday, because I wasn't sure about rice being a problem, and feel terrible today, diarrhea...
  24. Stephen, gluten is not just in wheat, but also in rye and barley, and you can't have oats because they're contaminated with gluten here in North America (they're fine to have in Europe). Also, what everybody else suggests is good. I know that the diarrhea stopped for me when I stopped getting gluten. You have to be like a detective when eliminating all...
  25. Holly, I often have very narrow, soft stools (not so much any more since being on the diet), so it could very well be a symptom of celiac disease.
