  1. I went to so many doctors with so many health problems (really, all quite typical of Celiac Disease) in my 52 years, both in Germany and here in Canada, that I wouldn't be able to count them all. All of them were clueless, I finally diagnosed myself after being severely ill from May to October 2005. I don't trust doctors any farther than I can throw them...
  2. To what Deb said: Here in Canada colleges and universities have health insurance for their students, which is covered by their tuition. My daughters were covered for chiropractic, dental, physiotherapy, medical and only had to pay 10% for medications. Lis, I don't know where you live. But I hope that in the USA college students would be covered, too. ...
  3. Nancy, thinking about it, maybe I got Celiac disease from both parents, too. My mother had all the obvious symptoms, except for weight loss (and the ignorant doctors think even NOW that you have to be losing weight to have celiac disease). She died of liver cancer at the age of 66, when I was 34. My dad also died of liver cancer, when I was 45. I don't remember...
  4. You know Missy, I just finally started reading the book "Dangerous Grains" yesterday (I'm almost done, I can't put it down). You need to read that, and you'll NEVER be tempted again to have anything with gluten in it. Because you'll want to avoid all the autoimmune diseases, and you don't want to die of cancer, either. The evidence the authors present is...
  5. Lis, I also had an abusive, controlling mother, and now a VERY controlling husband. Because of autism I don't believe I'd be able to make it on my own, so don't have a choice but to stay (and also because my youngest daughter still needs me). But you have a choice. I agree that you need to find a job and a different place to live. Parents are supposed...
  6. Thanks for your responses. I guess in the meantime I've received my answer. It appears that now I just get a delayed reaction, as I have (about 24 hours after eating that piece of pizza) explosive diarrhea (which I've had only the two times I know I've been glutened, and had all summer, when I was so ill) and awful rumbling in my bowels. No more doubts...
  7. I wonder if anybody can give me some advice here. Because I self diagnosed myself (and my doctor agrees with me having celiac disease), and felt just awful lately, with all my pains coming back (not the diarrhea, though) and having stomach aches again, that maybe I was wrong thinking it's Celiac disease. The last time I (accidentally) got gluten, about...
  8. Jason's Mom, anemia is a very common symptom with Celiac disease (I had that as well), which would make you quite ill in the long run. Besides the fact that undiagnosed celiacs who eat gluten have a many times magnified chance of getting cancer somewhere in the digestive tract (my grandmother died of stomach cancer when my mom was 20, and my mother died of...
  9. Well, I have had my bone density test requisition for about a month now. But because of the holidays and too much stress, I keep forgetting to make the appointment at the hospital to have it done. But having been tested to have low vitamin D, I expect that my calcium and magnesium must be low too. So, osteoporosis is a good possibility. I'll try to...
  10. What you all are describing is called SENSORY INTEGRATION DYSFUNCTION, and is extremely common among autistic people, me included. I have great trouble judging where my body parts are in relation to things, and run constantly into things, stub my toes, hit my hand on things etc. I am so used to it, that I often don't even notice any more, and wonder where...
  11. Surferdude, you don't mention if you have Celiac disease or not. The answer to that question is important! I've had (what I've thought) psoriasis on my scalp probably all my life. I tried head and shoulders, which made my hair fall out, tar shampoo which caused unbearable burning and a host of other things, all very unhelpful. When I found out about...
  12. That's a good question. I hope not, as celiacs off gluten are as healthy (or healthier) as other people.
  13. I have been sick all my life, but got REALLY sick in May 2005, and diagnosed myself with Celiac disease in October 2005, confirmed by my doctor. I've been feeling terrible this Christmas, probably because now apparently a severe sensitivity to salicylates has kicked in (or wasn't as noticable when glutened, or now my intestines are healing and taking up the...
  14. Thanks, Mariann for the links, I went and read everything, and it makes sooooooooo much sense. You're right, Rachel, about the buckwheat. I also put ground almonds in, as well as coconut oil (both high in salicylates), which were probably the problem. Lately I had also eaten a lot of oranges, cherries, almonds. I had switched to almond milk and drinking...
  15. When did I get Celiac disease? I believe I always had it. My grandmother (maternal) died of stomach cancer when my mother was 20 (coincidence? I don't think so), my mother died of liver cancer at 66, after being sick all her life (typical Celiac symptoms, which were never recognized because she was fat, unable to lose weight no matter what diet she tried...
  16. Brooke, I am no expert, I have only known I have Celiac Disease since October. But I believe that some of the advice you got is good, while some of it is nonsense. You do NOT need to replace your stove, since your food will be in pots or pans, you don't cook directly on the stove! But you do need a new toaster, since the bread obviously touches it directly...
  17. Nini, I understand your anger, I am dealing with the same thing. Only with me, it's my husband and two daughters (14 and 20), who leave crumbs absolutely everywhere and don't clean them up. I have been sick for over a week now, I constantly get glutened with them all at home over the holidays. It will get somewhat easier when Susie is back in school, and...
  18. I am glad you are finally figuring out what makes you sick. Reading what you've done makes me think I might be intolerant to salicylates, too, though. I am sure about the gluten, it's just too obvious a change just cutting out gluten. But now I seem to be reacting to other things, too. Last night I ate meat with onions and leeks (both high in salicylates...
  19. Ouch, if you have celiac disease, you better find yourself a new job, this one is likely (literally) going to kill you eventually!
  20. I agree wholeheartedly with Nini. I am very angry that for 52 years I had the symptoms of Celiac disease, being sick from the time I was a baby, and NOBODY ever figured it out! I was labeled as lazy, moody, hypochondriac from the time I was a kid. And eventually I had to figure it out by myself! When I was so very ill this past summer, my doctor tested for...
  21. I bought the book 'Dangerous Grains', and it arrived not too long before Christmas. Needless to say, I haven't had time to read it yet! But I will, I know it will explain so much. I also bought the 'Gluten free bible' (I think that's what it's called, too lazy to go and check), same thing, no time. I'll have time in the new year, when youngest kid and husband...
  22. This is very interesting. When five years ago I was researching cures and causes of fibromyalgia, I came across a book called 'What your doctor may NOT tell you about fibromyalgia', by R. Paul St. Amand, MD, and Claudia Craig Marek, RN. Now he claims that ALL people with fibromyalgia can be cured with a natural medicine called guaifenesin. And for that...
  23. I've had psoriasis on my scalp forever, and used to have it all over my trunk when I was a teenager. I get spots on my face, too. But a lot of the time it looks more like dermatitis herpetiformis to me. I sort of think that those are related. My head isn't as itchy since I got rid of the shampoo with wheat germ in it, and it seems to be clearing up...
  24. I used to have migraines for three weeks at a time (especially in the summer), until I found out I am intolerant to the nightshade family. The tomatoes triggered the migraines (and since I loved them, I'd feed the migraines all summer). Now I get migraines only when glutened, when getting overtired and when exposed to too much light/noise/flickering lights...
  25. German all the way.
