I read that the villi of people that got diagnosed very late (and I've had obvious celiac symptoms for 52 years, unfortunately, not so obvious to ignorant doctors I guess) might never really go back to normal. So, it is not only other problems that we might get, but our villi might actually never recover 100%. The younger you are when diagnosed, the higher...

ARCHIVED 'eat What You Want' Pill Caution
Ursa Major replied to Claire's topic in Publications & Publicity
Chrissy, the problem is, that many drugs the FDA considered to be perfectly safe for years were anything but safe, in fact, in many cases, they were killing people. I don't think ANY pills are completely safe, they all have side effects. If you have an illness that would kill you unless you take a certain drug, then the side effects are unavoidable, and you... -
ARCHIVED Funky Vision
Ursa Major replied to NOBREAD4ME's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Yes, I had those same kind of problems before going gluten (and many other things) free. It's much better now than it was. Somehow my vision has changed, though, and I'll have to get my eyes tested. I feel like my glasses aren't quite right any more (and I only got a new prescription 15 months ago). -
The damage to the villi isn't permanent, they'll heal (it can take up to five years in some people, usually about a year or two) when you stop consuming gluten. The exception are some people who were diagnosed late in life (like me), were the villi may or may not completely heal. The biggest problem is, that there can be other permanent damage to other...

ARCHIVED How Do You Leviate Your Symptoms When Glutened?
Ursa Major replied to kari's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
The e-mail to your dad is a good idea. But instead of hoping that he'll mention and explain it to his family, ASK him to PLEASE explain it to them before you get there, and to tell them not to worry about it, since you'll be bringing your own, safe food. That way they'll know, but won't make a huge fuss over it, and you won't have to do much explaining. And... -
ARCHIVED Anybody Else Here With Autism/add In The Family?
Ursa Major replied to Fiddle-Faddle's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Fiddle-Faddle, when I am saying that 5 family members have AS, I mean my family back in Germany. And they don't think I'm odd at all (even though my mother didn't like me, and abused me and the others that were 'different'). It's my family here in Canada (my husband and children), who are the problem. And none of them have AS. Thanks for your encouragement... -

Thanks Patti, I appreciate you saying that. Sometimes I feel like it's me alone against the world. -
ARCHIVED Medic Alert Bracelets
Ursa Major replied to penguin's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I agree that it's a good idea to add celiac if you have a bracelet already. I used to have one, for asthma and a severe intolerance to a common asthma drug (Theo Dur, which might be given in an emergency) and morphine (one dose will make me vomit for three days). But it was ugly, and I stopped wearing it. But I think I should get a new one, now that I know... -
ARCHIVED Anybody Else Here With Autism/add In The Family?
Ursa Major replied to Fiddle-Faddle's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Michael, I have done extensive research on autism and AS, and own a ton of books on the subject (definitely the ones worth reading). Too bad my family isn't interested in the least, which holds true of Celiac disease as well. They simply don't care to find out 'what makes me tick', or what makes me sick. They lecture me on the way I should behave, and don... -
ARCHIVED Anybody Else Here With Autism/add In The Family?
Ursa Major replied to Fiddle-Faddle's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Okay, answering some of your questions: Yes, the Tourette tics have improved on the gluten-free diet. Others have even noticed that my tics have lessened quite a bit. And whenever I've been glutened (or eaten something else I am intolerant to, it's impossible to always know what it was), my tics will get worse again. So, I still have quite a few tics, but... -

ARCHIVED Anybody Else Here With Autism/add In The Family?
Ursa Major replied to Fiddle-Faddle's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Fiddle Faddle, I have Asperger Syndrome (as well as Tourette Syndrome and Celiac disease). Three of my six brothers obviously have AS as well, as well as my sister, and my father undoubtedly had it (even though none of them admit it). I must have embarrassed my family to death a million times in social situations, as I have a knack of always saying and doing... -
ARCHIVED How Big Of An Area Is Needed For Biopsy?
Ursa Major replied to TCA's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
I read that they only really need ONE blister for a biopsy. They'll take it right beside the blister, that should do it. Go for it, I am sure that's what it is. I've had those same blisters, especially on the sides of my fingers, for many years. Since I've gone gluten free, I rarely have those. And my joint pain is gone, too (even though it seems that not... -
ARCHIVED Taking Metamucil
Ursa Major replied to gointribal's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Metamucil might be gluten free, but is sweetened with Aspartame, which is a deadly poison to anybody. Personally, I've stayed away from Aspartame ever since I found out how harmful it is. -
ARCHIVED Dr. Green's New Book
Ursa Major replied to CMCM's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
That's one part of his book I don't like (I'm not done with it). I also react to wheat germ oil in hair and skin products, and I don't buy the claim (which is made all the time) that you don't absorb any gluten through your skin. You absorb a lot more than you think. I am with the ones who will avoid EVERYTHING that contains gluten (or anything else I... -
ARCHIVED Anyone Else Rice Intolerant?
Ursa Major replied to covsooze's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
No, sweet potatoes are not nightshades as far as I know. But they are high in salicylates. The way to be on this diet is, to not eat the same thing every day, but to rotate things. That way you don't become intolerant. And actually, that's the way it should be on any diet, no matter what. I try to vary things as much as possible, which is hard but doable... -
ARCHIVED Traveling To France & Germany
Ursa Major replied to tanyad's topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
Okay, since I haven't actually lived in Germany for 27 years, and haven't been back since being diagnosed with Celiac disease, my knowledge is hearsay, while yours is firsthand. And what you're saying makes me feel better, because it is definitely good that wheat starch has to be listed, as well as possible cross contamination. That way people can make up... -
ARCHIVED Anyone Else Rice Intolerant?
Ursa Major replied to covsooze's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I am glad you're finally getting some answers. I would be slightly skeptical about being completely intolerant to all vegetables. It could very well be a salicylate intolerance, which means that you can tolerate small amounts, infrequently, of carrots for instance (depending on what you have the rest of the day). I ordered the Salicylate Handbook from the... -
ARCHIVED Traveling To France & Germany
Ursa Major replied to tanyad's topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
I checked out the above mentioned German cards, and there is a serious typo in them, making them useless at this time. I contacted the people responsible for the site, and hope that they'll correct it very quickly. The cards state that you have a 'Lutenunvertraeglichkeit' instead of 'Glutenunvertraeglichkeit'. Easy to correct, but you really can't print... -
ARCHIVED Anyone Else Rice Intolerant?
Ursa Major replied to covsooze's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Sorry I took so long to reply, I was visiting my daughter in Ottawa for six days, and then went from there on a nice visit to see some friends in Sudbury, and just got back today. I hope I can help you find some answers. When I figured out gluten was a huge problem, and was had been causing the terrible, chronic diarrhea, I stopped eating anything with... -
The thing in diet anything that might kill you is ASPARTAME! It is pure poison and will make you sick, and might kill you in the end. It is known to cause heart attacks, blindness, MS, lupus, it will make diabetics often VERY unstable and unable to control their blood sugar levels. It will make you crave carbohydrates, and make you gain weight, not lose...

There seems to be a lot of confusion on this subject. My opinion is, that gluten and casein won't actually cause autism, but will make it much worse in many autistic people. There is great resistance to this in especially Asperger circles, as they want everybody to believe that ALL of the symptoms are caused by genetics, and that diet and vaccinations etc...

ARCHIVED Anyone Else Rice Intolerant?
Ursa Major replied to covsooze's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
For the people who asked, this is what I actually eat - and most of you won't have to be as restricted as that, of course, since I have to cut out most salicylates, too (there is a definite limit every day for those, if I don't want to be in pain the next day). Meat: Beef (no liver), chicken, turkey, fish (no other seafood, but I never liked things like... -
ARCHIVED Anyone Else Rice Intolerant?
Ursa Major replied to covsooze's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
You sound like you are intolerant to lectins. Gluten is one of them, and I react very strongly to them all. That includes all grains (including rice and corn), all legumes (including soy and peanuts), all milk products, eggs, all nightshades (potatoes, tomatoes, peppers, eggplant). And except for the nightshades (because they are high in salicylates as...
