ARCHIVED Raw Food Diet For Cats
lonewolf replied to Jestgar's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Raw bones are definitely different than cooked bones. My dog has been eating them for 3 years and has NEVER had even a single problem. We started him with little bones like chicken wings and necks. Now he eats whole leg quarters. Some people give their dogs raw turkey too, but those bones seem a little big for my dog (about 50 lbs.) Beef bones are too big... -

Bea - interesting sounding recipe! Makes me want to experiment too. I made lasagna for dinner tonight with zucchini noodles. It was really good! I made the "noodles" a couple of days ago with my new mandolin (I just learned about this a couple of weeks ago) and dried them a bit in the oven before storing them in a ziploc bag in the fridge. They were... -
ARCHIVED Raw Food Diet For Cats
lonewolf replied to Jestgar's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
I don't have a cat, but I feed my dog a raw diet and have for almost 3 years - since he was 3 months old. He eats chicken - all the parts and the liver and stuff inside. The raw bones are fine. It's the cooked bones that cause the problems. He also eats beef - full fat hamburger and liver, and fish - mostly skin and any "guts" we can get. The organ... -
ARCHIVED Raw Milk
lonewolf replied to runningcrazy's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Don't be so quick to pass on the raw milk. If it comes from a certified dairy, it probably has less bacteria and less chance to make you sick than regular pasteurized milk. You want to avoid raw milk from a source that isn't inspected regularly. That's where people get sick. As for soaking nuts - it's pretty easy. I put mine in a bowl of water with... -
ARCHIVED Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD)
lonewolf replied to AliB's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Thanks! I've seen the list there. I know that there isn't one person or group in charge of the diet, but it just seems like it would be so much easier if there was a place that everyone could report to when they get a letter from a company. I wonder if some companies get tired of people calling asking the same question! -
ARCHIVED Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD)
lonewolf replied to AliB's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Hi everyone, I just had to pop in here and share some successes I've had with recipes and getting my son to eat new foods. Yesterday morning we had "breakfast burritos". I made up some homemade "sausage" with ground turkey, salt, garlic, basil and oregano and cooked it into crumbles. While it was cooking I beat some eggs and made little thin omlets,... -
ARCHIVED Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD)

I wish I could get my son to eat squash. I love zucchini, yellow squash and all of it. He eats just about any veggie except squash. I'm trying to change that. I got a butternut squash today that I'll be making into fries tomorrow for dinner. I'm way too chicken to try dairy with him. I really think it has a lot to do with why he developed UC in the... -
ARCHIVED Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD)
lonewolf replied to AliB's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
I have to share a funny story, because honestly, I'm having a hard time with this. It's fine for me (but I'm not the sick one), but my son isn't getting enough to eat and I have 3 other kids and a husband too. I start back to work tomorrow and I don't know how I'm going to find the time to make all this food. Anyway, I needed a humor break, so I guess... -
ARCHIVED Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD)
lonewolf replied to AliB's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Ali, Bea, Pele and Jan - thanks for the tips and encouragement. I'm doing a bit better now. My son is still hungry all the time and I decided to start baking almond and coconut flour things (cake and pancakes so far) for him so he can feel full and satisfied. It doesn't seem to make him any worse. BTW - we are used to eating a lot of fruit and vegetables... -
ARCHIVED Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD)
lonewolf replied to AliB's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
What am I doing wrong? My son has LOST 6 pounds since we started on Sunday. He can't keep losing weight! He hasn't "cheated" except for eating peaches, strawberries, coconut milk and some almond pancakes, which aren't cheating, just moving ahead a bit quickly. I have to find a way to keep some weight on him. He's lost 22 pounds since school got out... -
ARCHIVED Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD)
lonewolf replied to AliB's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Hmmm, I think the real reason I was hungry was because I was only eating about 900 calories for the first couple of days. It's kind of hard to get enough calories through meat and vegetables and a little fruit - my son has been eating twice as much meat and drinking more juice and eating lots of canned pears, so he's probably okay. I've been gluten-free... -
ARCHIVED Endoscopy/colonoscopy
lonewolf replied to ksymonds84's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Just something to keep in mind - if you're still not getting better with gluten-free alone, you might want to consider trying the Specific Carbohydrate Diet. It's a bit more challenging, but it's also not necessarily for life - just until all the symptoms are gone for a while. -
ARCHIVED Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD)
lonewolf replied to AliB's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Thank you! This is all interesting and confusing at the same time. I can't seem to get an answer from the UC SCD group on how to know if it's okay to add new foods. They seem to have a "clique" going and if you're not well established, they kind of ignore your questions or make it seem like you're just trying to find a way to cheat. All I want to know... -
ARCHIVED Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD)
lonewolf replied to AliB's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Second day going pretty well. We "cheated" by eating a few strawberries. This is waaaayy harder than just gluten free and dairy free! Omelettes for breakfast, chicken soup and canned pears for lunch, jello (made with diluted grape juice) for snacks and we have salmon grilling right now along with some zucchini and peppers. Baked apple slices will be... -
ARCHIVED Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD)
lonewolf replied to AliB's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Here's what I wrote last night - my internet was down. I'm going to journal this process, but I probably won't post it all here. But this was my day yesterday! SCD Day 1 I -
ARCHIVED Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD)
lonewolf replied to AliB's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
I just finished reading Breaking the Vicious Cycle and am getting geared up to start the SCD with my son. We're going on vacation for a week, so I'll be doing a bit more research and recipe gathering and then start when we get back next weekend. I've been experimenting with recipes so we aren't caught off guard. So far, so good. I made a batch of cookies... -
ARCHIVED Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD)
lonewolf replied to AliB's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Thanks for the responses. I'm still trying to figure out if this will work or not. I'll look into the other SCD group from the link. I think I need to check out the book at the library to get all the info first. -
ARCHIVED Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD)
lonewolf replied to AliB's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Hello! My son was just diagnosed with ulcerative colitis and I'm thinking about trying the SCD for/with him. He's already gluten free and needs to go dairy free totally. I'm wondering if any of you do this for your whole family. I have 4 kids and when school starts I'll be working full time too. I can't be making two sets of meals. Is there a way... -
Thanks for the responses! I'll pop over to the perskyfarms board very soon. I actually came on here just now to ask a question about the SCD. This is WAY harder than if it were me. My son doesn't want to talk about it and is only willing to stay gluten-free and go dairy free. At least he's willing to do that much! I'm not sure if I can swing doing...

ARCHIVED African Americans With Celiac Too?
lonewolf replied to BellaVoce's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Welcome! I think you've probably found your answer. I don't think that gluten intolerance or Celiac Disease is ruled out in any racial group. I hope you stick around - feel free to ask lots of questions! -
My 14 year old son just had an endoscopy and colonoscopy this morning. The only problem that showed up is damage in his colon - he definitely has Ulcerative Colitis. It's better than Crohn's, which is what we thought it would be. He has to take Asacol "indefinitely" according to the GI doc. My son is already gluten-free, and has been for several years...

I'm not sure where to post this, so I hope this is okay. My 14 year old son, who has been gluten-free for over 3 years but never officially diagnosed with celiac disease, has been having bowel problems for several months. He just told me a few weeks ago that he's been having bloody diarrhea and blood with bowel movements since April. He's lost 13 pounds...

Aren't pierogies the same thing as Russian "Pelmeni"? Pelmeni are like little raviolis and can be stuffed with meat or potatoes. I make them gluten-free fairly often. My son, adopted from Russia, loves them. Dough for Pelmeni or Ravioli 1-1/4 C Brown Rice Flour 1/2 C Potato Starch 1/4 C Tapioca Flour generous 2-1/2 tsp Xanthan Gum 1 Tbs. oil...

ARCHIVED Betty Crocker gluten-free Mixes
lonewolf replied to purple's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I found the brownie, yellow cake and cookie mixes at Fred Meyer (Kroger) in the south Seattle area. We did discover that you cannot make the brownies using melted coconut oil and egg replacer . I was trying to make them completely dairy and egg free for my daughter's friend. Should have known that the coconut oil wouldn't be right! -
ARCHIVED Please Help! Self Diagnosed Myself With Celiac Disease
lonewolf replied to MomOf2PrettyGirls's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Welcome! It could be one or the other, or both! A simple test would be to continue to take your medication and eat some wheat thins, bread, pasta or something gluten filled. Or you could stop your medication and continue to eat gluten-free and see what happens. Maybe you could try it both ways and see which works best. Did you ask your doctor to...
