ARCHIVED Advice For Itchy, Flakey Scalp
lonewolf replied to lilfrenchie's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I remember the "heartbreak of psoriasis" commercials too. Didn't understand at the time what they meant. I eliminated all of the above mentioned foods because I had horrible arthritis and was desperate to have some relief. I had an ELISA food allergy panel done and I showed reactions to a LOT of foods. For a whole year all I ate was fish, rice,... -
ARCHIVED Advice For Itchy, Flakey Scalp
lonewolf replied to lilfrenchie's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I have the same problem with my scalp. I have psoriasis. I am fanatically gluten-free and have been for several years. I'm not sure what to do either. No shampoo works well - even T-gel doesn't work anymore. The only time that my scalp (and skin) has ever been completely clear was when I was on large doses of prednisone. That was the only "good" side... -
Uh oh, this isn't looking good. I guess I'll start buying lots of stuff for him to take.

My 14 year old son is going to Magic Mountain next weekend with a group from church. I will be sending him with lots of snacks, but I'm not sure what they have in the park or around it that he could eat for "real" food. I couldn't find anything on their website or even find contact information so I could ask questions. Has anyone ever been to Magic Mountain...

ARCHIVED We're Back - With Nephrotic Syndrome
lonewolf replied to Nikki~Nathan&Danielle's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I have Minimal Change Disease too, but it's been in remission for 4-1/2 years. I would suggest going dairy, soy and egg free also. When I first went into remission I was off all of these things and have just added eggs back in the past year and eat small amounts of cheese, but still no soy. My heart goes out to your son - I know how hard it is to deal... -
ARCHIVED Is There A Light At The End Of The Tunnel In Regards To Sports?
lonewolf replied to loxleynew's topic in Sports and Fitness
I don't have much time either, but I can briefly share my experience. I played multiple sports in HS, played basketball in college and became a PE teacher and HS basketball coach, while still playing in basketball and volleyball leagues, doing "fun runs" and playing tennis and working out (mild weight lifting). Then I had kids and got really sick -... -
ARCHIVED Celiac's Vs Gluten Intolerance Diff?
lonewolf replied to Eric-C's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Gluten intolerance may not cause an autoimmune reaction in the GI tract, but it can cause it other places. There is very little research to prove this, but I've seen something, somewhere, and I have my own personal experience. I'm "just" intolerant, but I have thyroid issues, psoriasis, tooth enamel defects and had arthritis. I also have a kidney disease... -
ARCHIVED gluten-free Flour Mixture "emergency"
lonewolf replied to lonewolf's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Thanks for the responses. There are some Christmas traditions that can't be broken and this is one of them. We always make a nice sized house and have some dough left over to make cookies to decorate. I think I might try to make a batch of cookies with the rice flour and corn starch first before I try making the house. I "glue" the pieces onto cardboard... -
ARCHIVED Laughed At When Talking About Food And Asparmate!
lonewolf replied to mr. moore's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Aspartame is one of those things that bothers some people and doesn't seem to affect others. I used to drink a lot of sugar free Dr. Pepper in college. All of the sudden I started getting weird headaches and would have episodes of "zoning out" that were probably mini seizures. I finally figured out that it all started when they changed the sweetener from... -
ARCHIVED gluten-free Flour Mixture "emergency"
lonewolf posted a topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I do a lot of baking at Christmas, but we're snowed in and I'm out of potato starch and tapioca starch to go with my brown rice flour. I have about 2-1/2 C of my normal flour mix, but I need 7 C for my gingerbread house recipe. I have brown rice flour, cornstarch, garbanzo flour and xanthan gum. I hesitate to use much garbanzo flour because the gingerbread... -
I'm just south of Seattle and we usually don't get much snow. We all get excited to see an inch or so. But now we have a foot or more. Luckily, most of my Christmas shopping is done and I stocked up on food before the biggest snow hit. I don't have enough gluten-free flour mix, so we probably can't make our gingerbread house, which is really sad. When...

ARCHIVED Anyone Else Tired Of "celiac" Vs "gluten Sensitive"?
lonewolf replied to mhb's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
This is a really interesting thread! I don't have the right genes for celiac, but I do get some GI symptoms when I eat gluten. I have a kidney disease, which the nephrologist told me was autoimmune, that went totally into remission when I went fanatically gluten-free. I know of others with the same kidney disease that have had similar responses, but the... -
We make a gluten-free, DF and SF gingerbread house every year. I follow the recipe for gingerbread men in the Betty Crocker cookbook and simply substitute gluten-free flour. If you don't have Betty Crocker I'll post the recipe. I draw out on paper what shape we want - usually 4 simple walls (two of them "house" shaped), and two simple roof pieces. Then...

ARCHIVED Thaksgiving Menu / Multiple Allergies
lonewolf replied to codetalker's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
This is almost exactly what was off-limits to me for a few years when I first discovered my food intolerances. Do you have to avoid yams? They aren't related to potatoes and should be safe. Do you have a bread that you can eat? If so, you can cube it and dry it and make it into stuffing. My suggestions would be turkey, gravy thickened with sweet rice... -
We just finished eating leftovers. Ahhh, I love Thanksgiving! I made a traditional dinner with just a few modifications: Turkey Cornbread stuffing inside the bird Mashed red potatoes w/skins on Gravy thickened with cornstarch Yams with maple syrup and cinnamon Green beans Rolls - Pamela's Wheat Free bread mix in muffin tins Cran-raspberry jello...

I've been to Outback three times - got really sick one time and not sick at all twice. I won't go back because it was outrageously expensive the last time, especially since we didn't get any substitutions for the non gluten-free things that were supposed to come with our meals. I think that my 1/2 chicken breast and 3 pieces of broccoli ended up costing...

ARCHIVED Sanity Check: Validity Of Enterolab
lonewolf replied to climbmtwhitney's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
This is really interesting. My son (13 now) is double DQ7 and I was told that he couldn't be Celiac. I had no idea that it was recognized as a Celiac gene in Europe. He's gluten free anyway and doing well. I hope your son's speech catches up soon! -
ARCHIVED A New Weight Loss Support/accountability Thread
lonewolf replied to lonewolf's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I'm glad someone picked this up again. I've lost 15 pounds since the end of August and am needing some new clothes that aren't baggy. I'm not going to make my goal of 20 by next week, but I'll take the 15. I'm trying for 5 more by Christmas. -
ARCHIVED Should I Postpone Kindergarten For My Small celiac disease Child?
lonewolf replied to jesslynn555's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
An advanced pre-school or "readiness kindergarten" would be perfect if you choose to keep him out. It's interesting reading all these responses and seeing how some people were the youngest and liked it and some didn't. It just goes to show you that there isn't any one right way to do it. If you have a good school system, boredom should not be a factor... -
ARCHIVED Should I Postpone Kindergarten For My Small celiac disease Child?
lonewolf replied to jesslynn555's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I have 4 children, including two kids with June birthdays. And I'm a teacher who has seen all kinds of kids, ready or not, enter school. My oldest daughter has a September birthday and missed the cut-off to enter Kindergarten by 10 days. I was upset and tried to get her in, since she was already reading and was plenty mature. Now, I'm very happy that... -
ARCHIVED A New Weight Loss Support/accountability Thread
lonewolf replied to lonewolf's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I'm down another pound, but it's been really hard work. Life has gotten busy because I'm now working 4-1/2 days a week instead of 2-1/2. I barely have time to do anything except work, cook meals, plan lunches for my 4 kids and me, do laundry and collapse. I've gotten a few workouts in there too, but not nearly as many as I was able to do while working... -
I follow almost all of my old recipes. Yeast bread won't work, but almost everything else will. I use my Betty Crocker cookbook a couple of times a week, with very few modifications. Cookies, muffins, pancakes, cakes, scones, biscuits, cupcakes, pie crust - I make them all. I use a simple flour mix for just about everything. Usually, the only modification...

ARCHIVED Sanity Check: Validity Of Enterolab
lonewolf replied to climbmtwhitney's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Before I stop reading this thread I would like to add that the majority of people here are very supportive and don't bother with distinguishing Celiac from gluten sensitivity. Patti - you have always been so helpful and gracious to everyone in all your posts. I do feel welcome here and I get a lot of good information and support. -
ARCHIVED Sanity Check: Validity Of Enterolab
lonewolf replied to climbmtwhitney's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
When the body has an immune reaction in the intestines it is celiac disease, that's the true definition. But what is it called when the body has an immune reaction caused by gluten in another part of the body? Your definition of "gluten intolerant" is too simplistic. I don't have any convincing scientific evidence to show that gluten sensitivity... -
ARCHIVED Making Sauerkraut
lonewolf replied to GermanMia's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Thanks for the recipe! I thought I didn't like sauerkraut because the horrible stuff in the can with vinegar is gross. But then I had some made like this and it is really good. I made some once in a Russian style with grated apple and carrot in it - it's good too. But I lost the recipe, so this is great. My son who's adopted from Russia will be happy...
