  1. Did she run any further tests? Urine test at least to check for protein? Edema is often a sign of kidney problems and I hope she took it seriously.
  2. I'm so sorry that he's not doing well. Please give the gluten-free diet a bit more than a week to help though. The little boy I described took 5 weeks to get into remission and he's a child. And I agree with Kat - it is normal for someone to feel fatigue when weaning off the prednisone. It takes longer for some people to get through it than others.
  3. I've done 11 or 12 of them, but they're the small ones - nothing like an ironman. It usually takes just under 1-1/2 hours to finish. I like to set goals to make myself accountable. I actually enjoy doing the small triathlons, since I love to swim and bike ride and as long as I don't have to run too far I like that too. Except for the time in my life where...
  4. Jestgar - that is great! Eating like you do is the only way I can lose weight, although I can't imagine losing 16 pounds in a month. Is your cat going to join you on your diet?
  5. Welcome Jenny! There are lots of ways to get protein for breakfast besides shakes. Rice cakes and peanut or almond butter, an apple or banana with nut butter, eggs (it really doesn't take long to whip up an omelet), a piece of cold chicken left over from dinner, turkey bacon, chicken sausage or even a slice of deli meat. None of these takes more than a...
  6. You should ask your doctor for a simple urine test to see if there is protein in it. If so, the doctor should know which tests to run next to test for kidney problems. My first sign of kidney disease was swollen feet, ankles and lower legs. I'm completely fine now though after being fanatically gluten-free.
  7. Okay, so this thread pops up again and makes me feel guilty for not keeping up. I think I've gained a couple of pounds since I last confessed, but I don't have time to go back and look. My cousin from N. Carolina came to visit for 3 weeks and I gained 3-1/2 pounds while she was here. I actually got back on track yesterday and ate low carb and exercised...
  8. Spend some time on here and feel free to ask all the questions you can think of. People here are very knowledgable and will be happy to help you out. It takes a while to get the hang of the diet, but it's very do-able. The little boy I helped out had very immediate and dramatic results - he got into full remission after about 5 weeks and he had been diagnosed...
  9. Hi Kat! Good to see you on here. I was hoping you'd respond too. I keep hoping that you'll get into true remission, but I'm glad you still don't have swelling. Hope all is well with you!
  10. Hi Amelie, I'm glad you found the site! I was diagnosed with MCD by biopsy in August of 2003. (Did you happen to get to see the needle they stuck in your husband? Oh my...) I was on prednisone for 9-1/2 months and hated every minute of it. My nephrologist wanted me to go on Cyclosporine, but I just couldn't do it. We were trying to find a way to keep...
  11. I've had better luck with Mrs. Leeper's corn/vegetable pasta - shaped like little "pagodas". It might be called radiatore or something? It's multi colored and stays softer a bit longer than the rice pasta. I make mine with Italian dressing, vegetables, goat cheese and olives though - a bit different than the mayo variety. With 6 people in my family we...
  12. I grew up in Kenmore and visit there occasionally. I'll have to check it out!
  13. Have you tried eliminating dairy, soy, eggs and nightshades also? I did this, and my psoriatic arthritis went away. For a year, I also eliminated all meat, peanuts, and most legumes. After a year, I added back legumes and nightshades. Now, I just avoid gluten, dairy and soy. The psoriasis has come back, but NOT the arthritis. Just avoiding gluten might...
  14. "1 package peanut butter chips (check the package for gluten, I used a gluten-free store brand)" Where do you find dairy free peanut butter chips? I haven't seen them and would LOVE to find some.
  15. My kids are older - 3 of them are teenagers. I didn't know any better when I had them all immunized "according to schedule" when they were little. My 14 year old has been accepted to a Nurse Camp at a local hospital for a week this summer and must provide shot records. She hasn't had her 2nd MMR and I don't want her to get it. I'm trying to find some...
  16. Here is my recipe for Pelmeni dough. It's not "perfect", but we all like it. My youngest son is adopted from Russia and this is his favorite food. He isn't even gluten-free and he inhales these. (You could try it with white rice flour - we like brown rice flour for everything, but not everyone else does.) 1-1/4 C Brown Rice Flour 1/2 C Potato Starch...
  17. I just came across it and it seems too good to be true, but I thought I'd ask here to see if anyone has heard of it or tried it. Anyone?
  18. Just a quick check-in. I'm at 170, so heading in the right direction (down 1-1/2 pounds in 5 days, I'm happy with that). But, I had a major carb craving this afternoon and overdid it. Will get back on track this weekend, holiday or not.
  19. Okay, I think I am really back on track, finally. I will be coaching at an overnight basketball camp for a week in June and I am motivated to lose what I can before that. It is the camp that I went to in high school and the camp owner will be there and remembers me. His words of wisdom for me when I got married were, "Now don't you go and get fat for him...
  20. A little off-topic maybe, but I NEVER try to explain to someone in a restaurant that I have a problem with gluten. Rarely does someone ever understand what that is. I always say that I can't eat (and sometimes say I'm "allergic") to wheat, barley, rye and oats. I don't think that the majority of people in the US have even heard of gluten, so it's pointless...
  21. I had minor surgery and had a red bracelet clearly stating that I was "allergic" to wheat/gluten, soy and milk. I asked the nurse who checked me in to make sure to put in my chart that I wasn't to be given anything to eat except what my husband brought in. (I was afraid I might be a bit out of it and would eat whatever they gave me.) The nurse replied...
  22. I just finished my 30 days and didn't see anything. But I didn't go poking around, so maybe there was something there. I'm a bit disappointed because I was hoping that maybe my skin would clear up a little (I have psoriasis) and that I would lose weight. I've gained weight and my skin isn't any better. I either didn't have parasites or the little critters...
  23. I'm still trying to hang in here. I've been doing great with the exercise - not as much as hightop girl, but still doing between 30 and 75 minutes of working out almost every day. And I've been good about not eating too many carbs and not much sugar. But yesterday ate way too much good, healthy food - black bean salsa with Fritos (okay, maybe those aren...
  24. That's great! You have every reason to be proud. He did a fantastic job writing his letter.
