  1. Has anyone had an aphthous ulcer in their mouth/on their gum? I heard one can get this with celiac.
  2. It took me about 6 months to really feel better.
  3. How do people cope with their depression if it is related to the celiac? I am suffering from depression. It is horrible. I take antidepressants, etc but how do people cope with the depression and when they want to eat somehting that that cannot? I think it is so hard.
  4. I am so angry that I do not have the freedom to eat what I want to eat. I wish I could just take a chance and eat gluten and know nothing will happen.
  5. I got pretty sick before they finally diagnosed me (GI doc was the last specialty consult I had before I was going to be shipped to psych) and am on a slow road to recovery. Thus, I see a GI doc and an internist for my follow-up. GI is about 2x a year. Internist about every 2 months or so. I am not the norm in terms of follow-up (I think?) but an example...
  6. I am going to the doctor on Monday. I feel like it is not soon enough! You guys scared me with the pernicious anemia comments and death!
  7. I notice that I have become increasingly fatigued in the past 3 weeks or so. Does anyone out here experience extreme fatigue from their sprue? If so, what do you do to combat it? I take a gluten free multivitamin and eat as healthy as I can (I stay away from processed foods). Does anyone have to have Vtamin B-12 shots? Thanks
  8. I guess I am in the minority here. I had a biopsy before I had the bloodwork. The doctors did not know what I had and a GI consult was the last thing I had before they were goinig to ship me off to psych unit. The biopsy came back + and then I finally had the right bloodtest to diagnose celiac. I would say Listen to your doctor. Not all doctors love to do...
  9. Hi I should mention that I was also clinically asymptomatic for 35 years until Fall 2005 when I feel deathly ill. I acquired an infection, which triggered the sprue symptoms. So, like you, I also had no symptoms for all of my life. In my case an infection "activated" my celiac. This is not the case for everyone though ("there are two celiacs that are...
  10. Is anyone concerned about their risk for getting colon cancer having celiac sprue? And also is anyone concerned about getting a diagnosis of refractory sprue?
  11. Generalized Weakness. I am still "recovering" (whatever that means) and I still have a plethora of symptoms, including D, C, brain fog, muscle wasting, and generalized abdominal pain. No fun.
  12. VERY STRICT (in reply to your question) You are a CANCER DOCTOR? Do you mean you are an ONCOLOGIST? (I have never heard an oncologist refer to themselves as a "cancer doctor", but I digress) You state that a little malabsorption every now and then won't lead to osteoporosis? Well I can tell you from experience that a little (albeit, a lot) of gluten...

    ARCHIVED Quote Of The Day

Pre diagnose and having spent 3 months with very intense symptoms (I had been asymptomatic prior this last Fall when an infection triggered my symptoms of sprue - a very curious thing as I really had not any symptoms I can think of even now 6 months after diagnosis and looking back on my whole life. I really had not been sick or had any overt symptoms. I...
  14. Oh yes I can relate. I was diagnosed last November and can tell you that it has been HARD. Lots of major external stressors as well. Mostly I have found it difficult to cope with the stress of a major lifestyle change and not being able to pick up a slice of pizza when I want to. It is depressing. I was put on antidepressants and antianxiety and I have...
  15. How many of you have had diabetes come to the fore after having been diagnosed with celiac and gone on the gluten free diet?
  16. YES! I have many symptoms still and n/v/d still. It is very strange. I feel that I have more symptoms now then I did BEFORE I was diagnosed. Sometimes I wish I had my old body back.
  17. I last had my period in August 2005, when I finished taking the PILL (by my own choice, not doctor ordered). Since August 2005 I have not had a single period or even a single body inkling (cramping) that I am going to get one either. I was diagnosed in November 2005. No doctor can tell me why I have not had my period either but I keep getting asked what ...
  18. I think so. I know that this whole winter was a wash because I have had many moments of not feeling well, stomach crampling, D, etc etc. I also know that since my Dx I have been feeling worse! My symptoms are much more prominent now. Anyone have this?
  19. I have to go to the dentist. I need to know what does my dentist need to know about my celiac (apart that I have it?). Should I be concerned about the products they use in my mouth? What about if I have a cavity? Should I be weary of the amalgam filling? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

ARCHIVED Need A Good Doctor In Nyc

Hi I need a GOOD internal medicine doctor AND a good GI specialist in NYC ANy recommendations?
  21. Hi I am totally with all of you in this. I am having a hard time myself. My mother was diagnosed with cancer about 1 month before I was diagnosed with sprue where I was so sick I almost died. It has been really hard because I have been slow to recover from the sprue and being a caretaker for my mother has been hard as well. I dont think I have allowed...
  22. I have not cheated. The reminder of being hooked to IV's for days on end last Fall with no diagnosis (almost worse then a misdiagnosis, I think?) is too fresh in my mind. I lost a lot of muscle tone and weight and I am still recovering, so no I do not cheat. What I find particularly hard is not that I miss the food I can no longer eat BUT the people who...
  23. Has anyone had a follow-up endo? I am reading a lot of postings that suggest not many people have had one. What have you done, or not? And, why?
  24. I am looking for comfort foods: Mac and Cheese, Pizza, and Hamburgers. I am seriously in need of food comfort and am finding it VERY hard to get comfort on this diet. HELP!
  25. YES! I have this issue. I was anorexic and bulimic for my teens. Then got better. Now I was jujst diganosed with celiac and have NO interest in food AT ALL. ZERO. ZILCH. I am angry about the celiac and at my doctor who took months to get a diagnosis but seems to want to help me get better. But I was so angry the other day I told him if he dropped me as a...
