Hello all! Well, I am at that point already where I have to get the glucose testing done for gestational diabetes - and was wondering if anyone knew if the stuff you have to drink - is it gluten free? I'm sure it's something similar to sugar water but I just want to make sure. Many of you have been through this already and I trust you over the people...

ARCHIVED Let's Talk Costco!
Melzo replied to lindalee's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I have a related question (regarding the Hebrew National Hot Dogs) - I am under the impression that only beef hot dogs with NO MSG's are safe for us to eat? Hebrew National I believe have MSG's? What's the deal - am I totally confused with the gluten free diet or what????? -
ARCHIVED Confused With Prenatal Vitamins

It's a girl. I hate surprises so I had to know. Her name is Samantha Louise and her due date is October 25th - not too far away! I will let you know when she arrives! -

Yes, we are all unique aren't we! We are in total agreement there. As far as the book is concerned, it sounds like a good book and I would never disqualify a "diet" that is truely working for someone (but at the same time is healthy). I just found my "solution" in a different location (my nutritionist) - and that works for me. I am happy to hear...

ARCHIVED Confused With Prenatal Vitamins
Melzo replied to smilemaker's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Oh, TiffJake - I just read the website (March of Dimes) that you posted. It states that Folic Acid is not toxic - and by taking too much will not have an adverse affect on you. The 1,000 mcg's is a guideline posted by the CDC as you stated. And I think that the reason they would suggest giving you a folic acid above 400 mcg's would be because most people... -
ARCHIVED Confused With Prenatal Vitamins
Melzo replied to smilemaker's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
No, I wasn't being a smart@$$ when I stated it is "not so obvious." Maybe I was just unaware as to why I had to take such high doses of these vit. and thought that maybe it wasn't so obvious to others as well. I agree it's possible to overdose - but not by taking one prenatal a day (as stated on the bottle). As far as the dosage that I was told... -
Ursula: I don't think that you read or understood my message at all. What I was explaining is not a diet at all, especially a "one diet fits all" as you state. Nor was I saying you can't eat more carbs than proteins, etc... I am saying that COMPLETELY eliminating a food group from your diet is harmful. I am saying that people eat WAY too much food...

I believe that most, if not all diets that eliminate a certain type of food - whether protein, carb, or otherwise is harmful and useless unless you have a good reason (i.e. celiac disease). Reason being, you are eliminating a type of food that your body finds essential, and when you start to reintroduce these foods, you gain the weight back or go back to...

ARCHIVED Is Low-fat Or Regular Mayonnaise gluten-free?
Melzo replied to Izak's Mom's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
When I read labels on yogurt - there are many that have "modified food starch" which I always stay away from. I only buy the natural yogurt. I am not sure what other ingredients in yogurt are considered to be gluten. I only use Hellman's Real Mayo as well!! -

My ob/gyn stated that your over-the-counter prenatals were fine until you get pregnant - then you need a higher dose of Folic Acid (over 1,000 mcg). Most prenatals are only 800 mcg's. When I did get pregnant, the doc. gave me a prescription (which was NOT GLUTEN FREE). I had a very hard time finding a prescription prenatal that was gluten-free and over... -
ARCHIVED My Psychologist Is Interested In Celiac Connection
Melzo replied to Nantzie's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
My mother believes that I have had Celiac Disease all of my life (but diagnosed at 26 years old). Four times I tried to commit suicide, once when I was in the sixth grade, twice at 20, once at 22. I was seeing a psychologist for 6 years - under every medication under the sun! Was diagnosed with depression, bipolar disorder, had severe panic attacks - lastly... -
ARCHIVED Any Ideas For gluten-free Folic Acid?
Melzo replied to nicki2222's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Actually the recommended daily allowance for pregnant woman is 1,000 mcg. But since I take a prenatal it takes me well over what I need. But she is not pregnant yet, so she can take a lower dose than what is needed until she becomes pregnant. Actually, just the prenatal would be more than enough for her in this case. The "100% of daily value" came from... -
I personally stay away from fast-food joints altogether. It saves me a lot of aggrevation (and tummy aches). Since I have been diagnosed (August 05) I have not stepped foot into a fast-food place and am still living without it.

ARCHIVED Any Ideas For gluten-free Folic Acid?
Melzo replied to nicki2222's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Nature Made products are all gluten-free and I am currently taking a folic acid supplement (with my prenatals). I buy them at Costco, however, if you go onto their website (www.naturemade.com) they have a list of retailers that sell them. They are very inexpensive and if you purchase enough of their products, you earn rewards. The ones I take have 4... -
ARCHIVED Have You Done A Gluten Challenge?
Melzo replied to ebrbetty's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Did she happen to mention what other disease it could be? I would be VERY interested in what other diseases come up positive the same as celiac disease would. As for my own personal experience - I have not done the gluten challenge, although I will be going to another gastro after the baby is born and I suspect that they will want me to try that as well... -

Someone on this site recommended digestive Enzymes for my heartburn / acid reflux problem. I must say, it works wonders!!! And it is all natural. I bought Papaya enzymes at GNC (gluten-free even). You can take 3 - 8 a day (they taste like candy) and they absolutely work. My sister and best friend who also had problems are now taking them. And it worked... -
ARCHIVED Pittsburgh Vicinity Cedar Point
Melzo replied to YankeeDB's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
I emailed Gary Jones today and got the same reply as above. I am really hoping that this works! I live in Pittsburgh and LOVE to go to Cedar Point!! -
I found that eating plenty of fruit while pregnant, has eliminated constipation. So, if you like fruit, buy a lot of it. I usually eat three to four pieces of fruit a day. It is also good for the baby! I never took Immodium so I can't tell you if it's safe or not - best to check with your doctor. It has been very hard to find medication that: ...

ARCHIVED How Should I Approach The Celiac Test?
Melzo replied to potchergirl's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I would imagine that when they did the biopsy, they would have seen that you had Celiac Disease. With Celiac Disease your villi would be obviously damaged. But that is only my opinion and doctors have surely missed these things before. I agree with Ursula that you should maybe wait until after the baby is born to do the gluten challenge. I too am... -
Hello all! I finally called the mid-wife to make sure that the items that you suggested were safe for me to take. Between the papaya enzymes and the baking soda - the papaya enzymes won! So I ran to GNC and bought a small bottle. They are absolutely wonderful!!!! I haven't had heartburn since I started taking them (last night)! I just can't believe...

Well....I have tried the apple cider vinegar - didn't help. Sent my husband to the store to pick me up "digestive enzymes" and the lady at the pharmacy yelled at him that I shouldn't be taking "herbal remedies" when I'm pregnant and I should first speak to my doctor. Well, I guess I will have to call her tomorrow! Geez, I didn't think it would...

Thanks guys. That helps out! I really don't want to feed my baby formula at all. I would much rather breastfeed. I guess I'm just worried that it won't work out. I should just wait til' I cross that bridge. I never heard of the nurses feeding baby water! I will put that in my birth plan that I don't want them to give them water. Wow. So much stuff...

Well, I know for a fact that it's a pregnancy issue. I could be drinking water and my heartburn act up. I just found out that the tums I was taking (and it was working) has gluten in it apparently. I read up on it last night and am going to try to eat smaller meals, stay away from the high acid type foods, etc... I'll try to beat this naturally! Thanks...

Hi all! I have two quick questions. I am currently 19 weeks pregnant and having some "issues." First, I have terrible, terrible heartburn. I was wondering what I am able to take to relieve the symptoms - since I can't take tums (which are approved for pregnancy but not gluten-free)? Second, this is not related to the first question at all but....
