ARCHIVED Gluten Free In Colonial Williamsburgelfkin posted a topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease We are planning a trip with my 6 and 10 year old (both celiacs and one with nut allergies) to Colonial Williamsburg. I am looking for any tips you may have on restaurants in Colonial Williamsburg or in the surrounding area. I would love for them to enjoy the whole experience, and getting sick would be a real fun-killer for everybody. Any ideas for us are...

ARCHIVED Celiac For Almost 2 Years - Now, New Health Problemselfkin posted a topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs My three year old was diagnosed with celiac at around 15 months old. He has been strictly gluten-free for 2 years. He was tested with the blood test, endoscopy, and DNA testing. He was positive on all counts. He drinks rice milk, has limited soy (rotated with VERY scant dairy), and is anaphylactic to nuts. We started seeing bloody streaks some months...

ARCHIVED Celiac - Now Diagnosed With Colitis As Wellelfkin posted a topic in Related Issues & Disorders My three year old was diagnosed (blood test, endoscopy, and DNA testing) with celiac almost two years ago. He has been strictly gluten-free ever since. He began to have blood in his stool a few months back. At first, it was only a little streaky. I assumed contamination and checked and double checked his diet. The blood became more and more frequent...

My 3 and a half year old is having some incidents of blood in his stool. Usually it is just bloody streaks. Last Sunday he had a diaper with alot of blood in it. We took him in to the Pediatrician and saw his allergist today. We are going Friday to his gastro doc. The allergist suspects a possible soy intolerance. He has been a diagnosed celiac for...

ARCHIVED Yowza! gluten-free Right On Coffeemate's Label!elfkin replied to sweetie101282's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications This is very helpful to know. I think I have been erring on the side of caution, but this is good news. The kids love creamed corn (from a can) and it lists modified food starch. So, it should say "wheat" as the source of the food starch, if it contains it - right? Thank you - I will add this news to my shopping list guidelines.

ARCHIVED South Beach Diet And gluten-free Compatible?elfkin posted a topic in Related Issues & Disorders I really need to loose some weight (okay, alot of weight). Both of my children are on gluten-free diets for celiac, my dh needs a special diet for health issues as well. It has been overwhelming to take on another "diet" and worry about the food for one more person (myself). But, the time has come to take control of the situation. I went in for a medical...

ARCHIVED Yowza! gluten-free Right On Coffeemate's Label!elfkin replied to sweetie101282's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications I had noticed this as well. I was wondering (along these same lines), the Nestle hot cocoa mix also says "gluten free" on the package. It lists "modified food starch" as an ingredient. Is this a contradiction, or is modified food starch sometimes okay?

ARCHIVED Substitute For Cream Of Chicken Soup?elfkin posted a topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips As the holidays approach I feel a craving for some of the dishes we used to make that also contain cream of chicken soup. Does anyone know a good way to substitute, where to buy gluten-free Cream of chicken, OR how to make your own? I am open to any option. Thanks!

ARCHIVED Campbell's Usaelfkin replied to Corkdarrr's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications Is "RTS" ready to serve? I have the chicken broth in the cardboard ready to pour package. I listed the ingredients in another post and I believe I was told it wasn't safe. But if the ingredients are supposed to clearly say "wheat , rye, oats, or barley" - then this product would be fine.

ARCHIVED Convenience And The gluten-free Dietelfkin replied to elfkin's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications I am so encouraged by your helpful replies. I just want to print this whole thing. It is great to have someone else brainstorm for you when your own brain feels all dried up! I really want to learn to make good gluten-free bread. I would love to try that book. Making the rice ahead is a super idea. The crock pot hints are great too. I do need to just...

ARCHIVED Convenience And The gluten-free Dietelfkin posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications I haven't posted in awhile, my life has been so chaotic that even finding time to check my favorite boards has been a challenge. I am now working full time. Both of my kids have to eat gluten-free and my ds is nut free as well. They are home with my dh for some of my work day and with my Mom the rest of the time. I am packing lunch and snacks, and trying...

ARCHIVED Bruising? Vitamin K?elfkin posted a topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease My dd bruises so easy - I am always shaking my head at her legs - It looks like we beat her!!! She is now gluten-free for suspected gluten intolerance (her brother is a full-blown hyper-sensitive celiac). Should I give her vitamin K? Is that something you can supplement with? I am so confused about what I should give the kids in the way of supplements...

ARCHIVED Furious!elfkin replied to Kailynsmom's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications I thought you could get tax help with gluten-free foods? Isn't this a form of reimbursement? I am referring to using the difference in the cost of regular bread vs. gluten-free as a medical expense.

ARCHIVED Vomiting And Celiacelfkin replied to a topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs My ds has been gluten-free for a year and a half (very strict). He has lately taken to random vomitting again. He will do it once and then not at all for a few days and then do it again. He did this (but much worse and more often) before diagnosis 18 month ago, but has only recently started again. I suspect he has other food allergies. I am working on...

Well, my son is having symptoms of more food allergies and such. He has been gluten-free for over a year (strict gluten-free). I am wondering about casein. To eliminate casein, do you just remove dairy? Does everything that says dairy on the ingredient list have casein? Can casein be in something if it doesn't say dairy on the ingredient list? I would...

ARCHIVED Questions About Blood Tests And Allergy Testingelfkin posted a topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs My ds has celiac. We are taking him to the specialists this week for yearly follow-up visits. He will see his allergist and the GI doc. He has been gluten-free for a year and a half - gained weight, doing pretty well. Since Dec. his stools have been less and less formed. For about two months they have been runny and lately watery at times. Our entire...
