Celiac.com - Celiac Disease & Gluten-Free Diet Support Since 1995

  1. Hello,

I have had celiac for about 7 years and I'm confused about a medication. And asking my doctors or pharmacy about ingredients etc they just seem to think everything is gluten free. So I decided to come here and see if any fellow celiac knows how to move forward with taking this specific manufactured prescription or suggestions on what to do with the information the manufacturer gave me. I was recently diagnosed with GERD (through endoscopy) and my doctor prescribed omeprazole 20 mg capsules. She told me the prescription is different than otc because it can be safer to take for a longer period of time. Which time is what I need to heal the esophagus. But the manufacture through xiromed stated "the medication is formulated without intended gluten ingredients, but states one of the inactive ingredients polysorbate 80 may be derived from "wheat, corn or olives" which she could not tell me if it was made from wheat or not. I'm so confused and don't know what to do with that information. Help!!!!

  2. Yes our Gluten Free Products are made in a Facility that follow FDA guidelines- The production line is in a gluten free environment.

As for the Yeast Extracts-we would have to contact the supplier.

Seems legit. No worries right? Is there a need to follow up as far as the autolyzed yeast extract. I mean my roast is left overs now but for future reference. I don’t usually make things in packets. But I am busy for the holidays school kids work. You know the deal.

  3. I bought pioneer gravy packet from my local Kroger. It’s Sunday today so I cannot call the manufacturer of this company. I seen the packet had the certified gluten free symbol on it and I poured it into my crockpot. I went to throw the packet out and said I should look at the ingredients. I saw “autolyzed yeast extract” from what I remember from my nutritionist a few years ago she said look out for this ingredient it could be barley. Does anyone know if this is safe. If it’s certified gluten free?

  4. I have been craving these for some time now and want to know if anyone has had any luck making mozerella sticks. What is the best cheese stick brand (that actually has taste) and what’s the best breeding for this? I use to eat the fright cheese sticks I found they had the most taste but someone at a celiac meeting here in my town said their enzymes might have gluten in them. I don’t know what to believe. The cheese brand doesn’t say gluten free but I know cheese is cheese but that worried me so I haven’t bought that kind?!

String cheese brand not cheese stick brand. Whoops.

  5. Thanks so much for the response.  This applies to the tater tots and the French fries? My biggest fear is always cross contamination. Sometimes I deprive myself because I’m scared. I don’t always have symptoms from being glutened so I always want to make sure the food is safe because I don’t want it damaging my insides eventually developing into cancer. I’m a worry wart when it comes to my diet but like you said sometimes there’s not enough time to cut your own potatoes. And I’ve never been able to make tater tots

  6. Hello I emailed this company about gluten to see if there were cross contamination issues and received this message back.... should I eat these after reading the email?

Thank you so much for reaching out. Yes, our products are gluten-free; however, we do use shared manufacturing equipment with other confectioners. We do an allergy cleaning on the production line before any of our caramels are made but I do need to let you know that other products that may contact eggs, soy, gluten, and nuts are made using the same line.  Here is our official statement on allergens:

General Statement about Allergens in Cocomels

If you are sensitive to dairy and other allergens we recommend that you do not try Cocomels due to the risk of potential cross-contamination that is outside of our control.  For an explanation of what we do and why, read on:

As a small company that needs shared production facilities, there are certain aspects of our production that we don’t have complete control over.  As a caramel, the only available caramel making equipment does by definition make traditional caramels when not making Cocomels, and therefore regularly processes dairy, and occasionally other tree nuts, peanuts and soy protein.  Before making Cocomels we perform an “allergen clean” and test the equipment for trace allergens.  As a result, we are quite confident our products are free of these contaminants, but unfortunately cannot guarantee that they are always 100% free of them.

Additionally, our chocolate is sourced as organic, dairy-free, and delicious.  Chocolate manufacturers however also incur the potential for cross-contamination as they produce their dark chocolate on the same equipment that produces milk chocolate.  We confirm they use good procedures between the two types, but again, there is always potential for cross-contamination.

This is a challenge we see as a company producing a caramel made without dairy in the traditional caramel space.  In the future we hope to control our own destiny by managing our own production but at this time it is not economically feasible to do so.

  7. Thanks cyclinglady! I feel better now I know you know your stuff :)  I just really want to try the blue moon one.  I love vanilla but the blue kind reminds me of when I was a kid. It does have a gluten-free symbol on it. I have yet to try the breyers gluten free vanilla one. Is there a breyers lactose free version that’s celiac safe? Maybe for OP and myself.  Sometimes I get constipated if I have too many milk products days at a time.

  8. I was wondering the same thing because I wanted the blue moon ice cream and this is what they sent me......

We have many gluten free flavors!  There is a gluten-free icon on the sides of our containers for all gluten free flavors. You can also visit our website to find out which flavors are gluten free.  Open Original Shared Link

We do process gluten on the same equipment as our gluten free flavors but the lines are thoroughly cleaned afterwards and we test the equipment to verify all the gluten has been removed.

looks like they process gluten in the same equipment I don’t think I’ll be purchasing this ice cream. Wish I knew of an ice cream that was good and didn’t do this.

  9. I’m in Michigan too!! How awesome. I’m not sure about the edys but someone on one of these forums or another celiac forum said they eat edys with no problem. I emailed Unilever breyers Ice Cream and got a confusing response and was scared to use it but really want their ice cream!!! cycling lady what flavor of breyers do you eat?  It just said they couldn’t confirm cross contamination. Is it safe to say celiacs can have their gluten free flavors? Thanks always.
