I'm glad the article got posted, I was going to post it yesterday but didn't get a chance to. Overall, it was a good article. Some of the local celiacs here wrote letters to the editor saying how, yes, there are replacements and they're yummy.
Why is it again that the doctors are afraid their patients won't be able to eat CRAP anymore?
-
Yeah she does, I heard her at a celiac meeting, and she said "kinikawhateveritis" and I said "you mean ka-nicky-nick" and she said "whatever"
Now, I will write a full legnth movie about the experience, it was moving. It will be shown at Tribecca and win an award. It will be called "glucose-free".
On a more serious note, I had to call them about an order the other day, and the nice lady that answered the phone said "Ka-nick-ka-nick, can I help you?" So I am guessing that THEY know how to say it, and that is what they said!
I think it should be a documentary in which a group of celiacs go across the country eating at restaurants, and record the hilarity that ensues.
I wish I had a video camera when the McDonald's chick in BFE Texas screamed "YOU DON'T WANT NO BUN?!?"

Thanks Chelsea--good ideas. Sony would be fun! I was thinking about the CP zoo too--so you think its pretty good? For about 4 years from HS to college, my mom and I got to go to NYC once a year...but its been 5 or 6 years now since. We have tickets to Wicked, can't wait! My mom just wanted some nice cheaper alternatives too so we weren't spending the dough constantly
I've been to lots of zoos all over the country, including the san diego zoo, but my favorite by far is the Central Park zoo. It's not the biggest zoo, and it's not the most impressive, but it's got so much charm! They have polar bears, a big rainforest building, seals, lots of penguins. I've been there a million times and I never get sick of it.
I got engaged in Central Park, maybe that's why I'm such a fan
Um, beware the carriage rides early in the day...you'll smell like horses all day!
DH proposed on a carriage ride at 11am...by 6pm at Tavern on the Green, we were still a bit "horsey"

Kettle chips were my first glutening. Had me running to the bathroom within 15 minutes. The company told me not to eat them because of cc.

hey nyorkers.... any good stuff going on city--exhibits etc? free or cheap stuff? my mom have some shows etc booked, but want some good activity ideas from the locals. we are going at end of month--25-29th.
The Sony Wonder technology lab is pretty cool. It's free, it's designed for kids, BUT there is a ton of interesting history on technology and electronics. My borther and I (31 and 22, respectively) really like it. It's a fun way to spend time. It's in the Sony building, but I don't remember the cross streets.
Staten Island ferry is free and the best way to get good photos of the skyline and the statue of liberty from a distance.
The Central Park Zoo is cheap, and it's my favorite zoo in the whole wide world! They have A LOT of penguins
(my favorite)
Also in Central Park- Belvedere Castle is pretty cool, and free
Bike rentals in Central Park aren't too expensive.
Even the Met (metropolitain museum of art) isn't very expensive, and you can easily spend your whole day there. A whole week even.
I'll try and think of some other stuff

Why is it that Dr's are so apprehensive about the gluten-free diet? Nobody died of not being able to eat a donut!
-
I looked at the vitmins in RED BULL and I was suprised. -- niacin 100%; vitamin b6 250%; vitamin b12 80%; pantothenic acid 50% -- I know when I get a B-12 shot, it has folic acid and pantothenic acid too. The pantothenic acid makes a big difference for me. Like ChelsE said the caffene lifts her energy.
I can see how it works. I'm just hypersenstive and am extremely limited and cautious about the natural flavor and natural ingredents, they hide so much there that makes us sick and we don't know it until later.
With all of your other intolerances, I would definitely try to figure out what is in the natural flavors. I can tell you with certainty that Red Bull is gluten-free, but I don't know about everything else.
One crisis at a time, for me anyway!

I make my own with ketchup, a little mustard, molasses or brown sugar, tabasco, onion powder, and whatever else I throw in.
Otherwise I use Kraft
-
Whenever I try to pronounce it I chicken out and say "Kinikawhateveritis"

Anyone familiar with Togo's sandwiches? Maybe its just in California but I used to work there as a teenager and I've had hundreds of Togo's sandwiches over the years. Today I was really craving one big-time. A large turkey avocado with lots of mayo and some cheese sounds sooo good. I like Subway too but Togo's rules....the bread and meat is WAY better.
Ooooooh...I forgot about Togo's
The turkey avocado was my favorite, too

Ha, thinking about it, it's kind of funny. She will eat chicken, but not on the bone. Will eat turkey too, but not pork, red meat, or seafood. So, not vegan, just, dare I say, picky?
Erm, did she not get the memo about vegetarians not eating chicken? Milk and eggs sure, if you swing that way, but not the animal of origin
I thought the point of vegetarians was NOT to kill an animal to eat that. Maybe she's picking her chicken off the poultry tree.
It seems that she's one of those people that find bones, blood, and skin "icky"
She's not a vegetarian, she's a bossy twit. I don't think there is a diet for that.
Tell her you're bull*hit intolerant in addition to Celiac.

soooo....what would be the method with rice wrapper ravioli?

Personally, I hate beer. I ran across this site though:

A Blue Jays game! I went to one in middle school and it's the only thing I remember from my only trip to Toronto.
That's saying a lot since I blocked out the majority of middle school

I always drink a red bull at the first sign of glutening (I'm having one now!). The caffene brings the energy up to a halfway decent level, and all the b-vitamins help the brainfog. Immediatley after glutening, it's my best weapon. I'm sure the niacin does something good, too. I have problems taking regular vitamins, so it really works for me.
Also a healthy dose of my bentyl and some tylenol help the tummy. I would say immodium is fine.
-
We used to use watered down mod podge. I don't know if it's gluten-free or not, though.

The sugar free altoids have wheat starch as well. They're in a very small tin.

I'm about to go to lunch with my boss. The restaurant we're going to is small and one I generally trust.
As for salad dressings, they make their own viniagrette. To me the class of dressing sounds generally safe. Oil, vinegar, spices. Should be alright, right?
I hate to generalize, and of course I will ask, but I want more than a wedge of lemon with my salad
Thanks!

I consider it a good day when I don't have the urge to take a nap under my desk. It sucks that I miss a day of work about every month when I have stomach pain so bad I can't work. I'm not contaminating the bathroom every day now, so that's a plus.

HUGHUGHUGHUGHUGHUGHUGHUGHUGHUGHUG
I'm sorry that you have to go through that, Lynne and Tinker.
Lynne: The brain is an amazing organ, and doctors know so little about how it works. Remember my post about my grandfather? He had a series of mini-strokes after surgery. Teeny tiny bleeds, but he's basically a veggie right now. My mom called me crying yesterday afternoon, and I feared the worst, but it was because she talked to Papa on the phone! She was convinced she would never hear his voice again. He said "hi" and "I love you" to her, and at that point she broke down, and he tried to speak in sentences but his vocal cords are still too injured from the month of a tube down his throat to really understand him. THE BRAIN IS AMAZING! If it can create new pathways in an 88 year old man, it's possible for you, too. They were convinced he was totally blind (in the brain, not the eye). He can clearly see, if even only shadows, because he says he can. Miracles do happen!
And yes, this disease does suck. I'm just glad I got dx'ed fairly early on.
-
Take a cheat sheet with legal and illegal ingredients, edited with those you know for a fact are safe or unsafe. I had a list that said inulin had gluten, it doesn't, it's from chickory root.
Your brain eventually becomes programmed to see unsafe ingredients. Just takes time.

If you react badly to vaccines, then it's not irresponsible to not take them.
For the general population, they are by and large a good thing. They have saved far more lives than they have harmed. I agree that you should read the entire insert, and just like any other medication or treatment, and make an informed descison.
I'm not going to tell everyone that gluten is poison just because it is for me. I believe it's the same principle for vaccines. A blanket statement doesn't apply, though research goes for both sides.

I must have a gaurdian angel from Zagat, because what sheer coincidence.
Yesterday, I had to go to my local copy place to pick up some printed materials for work. When I got there, the copies were wrong, so they had to be redone. Normally, we have this stuff delivered, but I schlepped over there because I had to go to the other office to do what I needed to do with the copies. I'd never been to this copy shop before. So I had about a half hour to kill.
I noticed a little vietnamese place in the same strip mall and wondered, hey, I wonder if I can eat Vietnamese food. I went in there and talked to the owner guy, who was manning the counter, and I asked about wheat. He said they don't even have wheat in the place, that EVERYTHING was made with rice, and they never use soy sauce in anything. They keep it around for the americans, but they don't cook with it. He was actually almost insulted that I thought they might. He said that "people like you" ie: celiacs eat there all the time. I can walk in there and eat anything off the menu.
Awesome. So even though I had already gotten a smoothie at Jamba Juice for lunch, I got a chicken and noodle thing. IT WAS EXCELLENT! The rice vermicelli was so good, the chicken was yummy, and I wasn't glutened! YAY!!! I called DH as I was eating it I was so excited!
I <3 Vietnamese food!
Check into your local restaurants, people!
