  1. At that point, nobody had said, "Celiac" to us. (And even now, I'm not officially diagnosed with it.) When I first introduced cow's milk to him, he had instant diarrhea, so I put him on soy milk and tried again a month later, with the same result. It didn't occur to me that trouble with casein or gluten could be a lifelong difficulty; I thought that...
  2. Hi, Robbin, Yes, the friendship thing is a constant challenge. My son is a stickler for the rules, and has trouble understanding when the rules get "bent" in any situation--and when he doesn't understand and gets frustrated, he gets (like most of us) very upset--which prompts the other kids to make fun of him. He is also anxious to please and be liked...
  3. Hi! I live in the North Hills (McCandless Township)! And I didn't know that Eat'n'Park (my kids call it "Eat'n'Barf") had a gluten free menu--thanks for the info! Outback Steakhouse also has a gluten-free menu. I've been substituting corn tortillas for bread (sandwiches), and a mix of cornstarch and corn meal for flour (to make sauces, etc.)--does that...
  4. I'm just wondering--what with the relationship between autism and leaky gut/celiac (they don't always go together, but the number of autistics with leaky gut is startling), how many of us are there who have relatives with autism, Asperger's Syndrome, ADD, or ADHD? If you don't know what Asperger's syndrome is, it's kind of like mild autism. People with...
  5. I don't want to send anyone into an unwarranted panic, but I think everyone with an infant or toddler with celiac in the family might want to check out this website: Open Original Shared Link or www.autisminfo.com and click on Karyn Seroussi's story. This is something I first read about 6 years ago--BEFORE I had any symptoms that might be related to...
  6. I nursed my 3 (not at once! they're now 10, 7, and 4) for 2 to 2 1/2 years each. My oldest gagged on rice cereal until he was nearly a year--we had to make it mostly breast milk. My middle one had a drug reaction to one of his vaccines at 4 months and I was told not to start anything other than breastmilk til the rash went away. It lasted 8 months. My...
  7. Thank you, Nini, I'm meeting Tuesday with a Physical Therapist who seems to specialize in helping people ward off orthopedic surgery. I hope she thinks I'm a good candidate for her type of PT! (Think good thoughts for me, okay? Thanks!)
  8. It's not just celiac that the doctors are clueless about--it's EVERYTHING. The problem is with our whole health care system, including what the med students are taught. I have had so many horrifying experiences, I don't even know where to start! Let me see... 1) When I brought my 6-week-old baby to the pediatrician because he was turning yellow, the...
  9. Could this be dermatitis herpetiformis? Does it itch and burn?
  10. Brain fog is a symptom of low thyroid, too....
  11. Yes, I've been having exactly those problems--but I'm not yet officially diagnosed with celiac. I'm trying to drink a lot for the dry mouth (licorice herbal tea seems to help) and use baby oil for the dry skin. I also seem to get a rash if I take a hot shower (lukewarm doesn't cause it). I wear soft contact lenses, which dry out easily. If I need to go...
  12. Hang in there, Heidi! I believe the Giant Eagle (store brand) Tater tots are gluten-free. At any rate, I couldn't find anything in the ingredients that pointed to gluten, and I didn't react, either. Doublecheck the ingredients on whatever store brand your grocery offers--I'd hate your little one to get sick because I was either wrong or sloppy. Seems...
  13. Thanks, everybody, for the info. I will give the cheapie moouthguards a try, and, if I can't stand them (I can't imagine that I'll actually like them), I'll try to find a dentist who likes making them. (I get the feeling that my dentist just doesn't feel like making one.) I don't believe I ground my teeth until I was stressed out from the @#$%! DH-type...
  14. Oh. My. Gosh. I had no idea this could be related to celiac. At my last dental appointment, my dentist said it looks like I grind my teeth, and several are cracked. He suggests a mouth guard from Dick's sporting goods store. He says they're just as good as anything he can make, and said to cut it down to size if necessary. The one thing he really...
  15. I've seen some really yummy "Mexican" lasagna recipes where you flavor the meat with taco seasoning, use various shredded cheeses instead of ricotta, and use soft corn tortillas instead of noodles. I supose you could use the corn tortillas in a traditional lasagna, too!
  16. My hair used to be light brown with coppery highlights, but darkened with each baby until it's VERY dark brown (except for a few white hairs). It's also gotten much thinner, unlike the rest of me . I've always looked much younger than I really am. I should note that I haven't been officially diagnosed with anything yet--I had a rash that sure loooked...
  17. I forgot to mention tofu (if there is no soy allergy)--very easy to digest, non chokable, and you can make it taste like whatever you want. I cut it into cubes and stir fry it with ginger, garlic, onions and serve it on rice, sprinkled with soy sauce (look for gluten-free, of course), sesame oil, an the tiniest pinch of sugar. If I don't have time to cook...
  18. I didn't give my kids crackers or much jarred baby food, either (and I've only had DH/celiac problems for about 6 weeks, so didn't even know about celiac when they were little). I gave my babies rice cereal or oatmeal mixed with breast milk, salmon, ripe avocado, mashed sweet potatoes, canned apricots, pears, peaches, etc. cut into tiny non-chokable pieces...
  19. I haven't knowlingly cheated yet (only stopped eating gluten 1/17/06, but had a reaction to a bowl of oatmeal?!?!), and I haven't even been officially diagnosed yet! But that DH rash was so horrible--it was like being allergic to my own skin--I have no desire to cheat. After the first 3 weeks were over, I don't even crave bread any more. On the other...
  20. I've been hunting for a simple and clear explanation of what the IgG and IgA results mean, but can't find anything on online. Do you know where I can find one? My husband (he's a chemist) says that IgG is the secondary response of the immune system, and means that a reaction has happened before, but he went into all kinds of technical chemist details...
  21. Hi Christy, I'm so sorry to hear all the difficulties your daughter has had. Here are some prayers and good wishes coming your way! Please be careful about vaccines for your daughter. Two of my children (also breastfed) had MAJOR reactions to vaccines, including severe blistering eczema that lasted for 8 months. I am not anti-vaccine--I do think...
  22. Thank you, everybody, for your ideas! Sweet rice flour--hmmmm, I wonder if baby cream of rice cereal would work? I know it would be more expensive than sweet rice flour, I 'm just thinking of it as a backup for when I can't get to the Asian store....
  23. Oh my gosh! I was hit by a car last month (sorry, long story) and dislocated my shoulder. The PT I'm seeing is very concerned because it STILL seems unstable after 5 weeks. I'm pretty upset, too-it's not a good injury for a violinist to have. It's been popping out while I'm sleeping (I assume I must be rolling on it). But I've never been hypermobile...
  24. Rachel, what's "Biohealth?"
