This topic might better belong in the food section...but it kind of goes with coping. I'm not coping well with the manufactured products available! I'm having issues with how nasty tasting most of them turn out to be! I spend way too much money to try something new and 9 times out of 10 I gag on it. (I'm probably just too picky and my tastebuds too sensitive...

Thank you. You're right - it's not worth it. I did slip up today and tasted a toaster strudel thing that I let my daughter have for a snack. It wasn't very tasty - and not worth cheating on! Ugh! I went today and bought $40 worth of gluten-free food - most of which will end up in the garbage because I gagged when tasting some of it. Why can't manufacturers...

A cube of butter? When you buy a package of butter...a box... it has 4 individually wrapped cubes in it. And on each wrapped cube it has the tbsp measurements...so one cube = 1/2 cup. Sorry - I thought buying butter this way was common? Chrissy - update!! My dad doesn't remember the exact address of the store - but here's the general location for... -
I so very much agree with this subject! It makes me almost emotional to think of the cereal aisle in the grocery store!! I could eat cereal all day long - my favorite food!!! When my hubby and I go grocery shopping that is the one aisle I never ever miss! I could spend forever on that aisle reading every lable - hoping to find one new cereal that...

I am sorry... I forget when I make comments like I did, that many people are allergic to more than just gluten. I wish it were easy for you too. Other's with more than one allergy help inspire me....and remind me that my life isn't so hard and to stop feeling sorry for myself. Good luck with using other flours - I'm sure you've found ones that work just... -

I can't help when it comes to using any other flour besides regular white rice flour. I've never ever used anything else - stuck in a rut, I guess! I'm an incredibly picky eater. My mom used to make bread from rice flour - and it would be good right when it came out of the oven with plenty of butter on it - but then it was horrible! I finally just asked... -
Carraba's, Bonefish, and PFChangs are all owned by OSI (Outback Steakhouse Inc.) which is why they all do the gluten-free menu thing. Last night, I won, and we went to Outback anyway... I was too stressed about dealing with any other restaurant (none of those other's are anywhere near where we live). On to more serious matters. I just don't know...

Yup! "Poop happens!" (However, I do know there is a difference from just having "D" and really being sick with yucky cramps and stuff....so I know it's not always just regular restaurant stuff... there's always the chance with celiacs that we've just had too much gluten at one time. But we can't always be sure of what's causing it.)

Thanks! So far - this will be my third day w/out cheating! Yea for me! haha! However, my hubby wants to go eat today since we both have today off. Now what do I do? I think he's sick of Outback and probably won't want to go there today - so what do I do about any other restaurants?
-
I just can't get over the fact that there are so many different kinds of flours and starches! Why bother using all of them? I don't have enough pantry space! I've always just substituted regular white rice flour and xanthan gum instead of wheat flours. It makes things turn out really similiar. (I'm not that great of a cook - but my mom makes gluten...

I agree! It's not just me who spends some time in the bathroom after eating out - my hubby does every once and awhile too. Who knows why! I think it could be a huge factor of things - fatty food content, chemicals, a server could be sick and touch your food, food poisoning, etc. Kind of scarey if you think about it too much! After working in an Outback...

Thank you for your replies. Yes, I do have a hard time hearing all of that. I guess I'm in a very late denial of my condition. I guess I don't want to face the fact that the little things I cheat with are actually hurting me. I don't eat a whole sandwhich or eat a lot of anything harmful - so I guess I've been justifying it. The thing I have the hardest...

Ang, I have been celiac pretty much my whole life - so it was my mom who worried about what I ate for a long time. She never bought gluten free ready-made foods (don't know that there Were any 21 years ago). She always had to make dinner for everyone else in the family and a separate dinner (usually just modified) for me. (My mom is amazing!!) She... -
Is the damage permanent? I've never quite understood that. Isn't it just temporary - and everything goes back to normal when we eat right? Or, by cheating, am I permanently hurting myself past repair? How can I know for sure? Aren't there different levels of intolerance? Some higher than others? Is it possible that I've grown more tolerant of gluten...

ARCHIVED Seeking Celiac Buddies In Utah

Karen, This response is really late, I know - but if you are still posting in this site then maybe you'll read this! You are not "old and out of the loop".... LDS has nothing to do with the age gap. LDS stands for Latter-Day Saint a.k.a. "Mormon". It's a church - The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. There are more than 11 million members... -

Thank you, so far, for your responses and concern for me. I really appreciate the words of advice. To respond: Robbin, I'm glad I've researched this site also. (My hubby started working late shifts...so it's a nice time to get online after my little one's asleep.) I've already learned a lot - and now have a million questions about something I thought... -
I just finished reading the entire thread of conversation for what you were surprised to find gluten in. I had no idea that anyone with celiac was so sensitive to gluten that they couldn't use certain shampoos or makeup or even the same pots and pans as non-celiacs! My goodness - that's so awful!! How do you all do it?? I always read the ingredients in...

Danikali, I'd love to encourage you!! However, if you read many of my posts you'll find that I'm not a very "good" celiac...so don't follow my example! I've had celiac sprue for 21 years (I'm 22 now). I don't remember much of the hard times. I do remember being so left out in school. Whenever kids had birthdays and they'd bring cupcakes - I could... -
Lauren, You should totally apply!! They are a great company to work for. Just to warn you though - you have to take a lot of tests to be hired! It's a pain! And every six months you have to retest to make sure you know the menu descriptions! But hey - it's a job, right!? If you do get hired - be careful - the food is so tempting to eat all the...

ARCHIVED The Best Rice Flour To Cook With
MallysMama posted a topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I have recently discovered all the many kinds of flours that health food stores carry. I have tried their rice flour and it doesn't even compare to the kind I've used all my life. My parents found a little Japanese food store when I was little and bought their rice flour by the case. To this day (though my family no longer lives near there) - if my dad... -

Hi everyone! My name is Karleena and I was diagnosed with Celiac Sprue in 1984 when I was about 18 months old. You'd think I would know a lot about the disease - but I don't! I've decided to start to learn more about it and meet people with it. I live in Southern Nevada (moved here June 2005 from Southern Utah) with my hubby and 19 mo. old daughter, Mallory... -
I don't feel old enough to be considered a "vetern celiac" - I am only 22 - but I was diagnosed with Celiac Sprue when I was 18 months old (when it was very rare and they didn't know a lot about it). I, of course, don't remember details of what I went through, but my mom wrote down the "story" for me and the nightmare they went through. I saw a lot of doctors...

Hi! (I'm new here and this is my first post!) I'm so excited to read that other people know about Outback's gluten-free menu! I had no idea until I started waitressing there 6 months ago. They don't put the gluten information on their general menu - you have to ask for the gluten-free special menu. Most things just have to be made without their seasonings...
