  1. How you deal with oats is up to you....I personally avoid them completely. I once saw some oatmeal raisin cookies that had a gluten-free sticker on them in the healthfood store....they looked good--they were gluten-free, but contained oats, so I passed. At this point, the contamination is so likely--depending on which oats you use, you might get an okay...
  2. No--you don't need more than one person. It's just marketed that way. My mom and I both registered last night--she's going to do the screening even though she's tested negative for celiac in the past because she seems to have symptoms that match up with celiac: hypothyroidism, bloating/distended stomach after eating particularly gluteny foods, etc. If...
  3. Although, I guess one positive--sort of positive--is that celiac isn't mentioned directly, even though "gluten allergy" makes me think that's what they might be refering to. So if someone questioned your policies about gluten, having read the article, you could say that this person has an "allergy" -- of course, allergies can range in severity and with some...
  4. Richard (lovegrov) said that when he last called the Lays Classic, Ruffles, and I can't remember which other ones--were made on dedicated lines--according to a dietician from FritoLays--I don't think that the Baked Lays were on that list. This was in a different potato chip post about reactions....
  5. Wow--that's so funny! I was the same way pre-diagnosis. I had a really poor appetite, as well. I always finished my potatoes, but if we had spaghetti for dinner, it would seem to multiply in my bowl ....wow, it seems like we all have a lot in common with regards to eating.....
  6. Really happy to hear you're feeling better on the diet, Wendy. I know what you mean about when you felt sick--eating all the bland foods that yo thought would make you better. It's rather ironic that when I felt sick I'd eat Cheerios, toast, saltines, or some gluten-containing chicken broth....all the stuff that caused the symptoms in the first place...
  7. I don't know what's up with this, of course, but I find it upsetting that celiac is portrayed in such an inaccurate way--it's teaching people the wrong ideas about celiac and it might make it harder for people to believe you, since they've read an article about another "celiac" who can just pick the toppings out--I agree strongly with phakephur
  8. For traveling-- contact the airline you are going to fly ahead of time to see if they can accomodate with a gluten-free meal. Many airlines will, but you can't leave it till the last minute or until you are on the flight. If you are traveling in the United States, it's much easier to eat out, since you can print off menus from chains such as Outback...
  9. That's terrific! Thank you...I don't react to Lays, but was starting to get a little scared when I heard all the posts about people reacting...good to know
  10. I, like Deb, don't react to them, but I'm concerned by all this talk of reactions. Are there any....safer brands that someone could recommend?--ones that aren't organic and found in a healthfood store, that is
  11. There is a list of companies that clearly list gluten, compiled by Richard (known as "lovegrov" on this message board)...this means that you can just read the label and, like Kraft, know immediately if it's gluten-free or not. On this list are the following companies: Aunt Nelly's, Balance, Baskin Robbins, Ben & Jerry, Betty Crocker, Blue Bunny, Butterball...
  12. Shampoos because it could get in your eyes or mouth by accident--makeup, particularly lipstick, for the same reason--it gets in your mouth. Lotions, etc. could get under your fingernails and get in finger food, for example. Gluten molecules are too large to be absorbed through the skin, which is why you can pick up a gluteny bagel and feel fine--just...
  13. I see what you mean--it sounds like you're doing it all right and I didn't think that you sounded careless when you posted--it's just sooo easy to make a mistake somewhere. Check out Open Original Shared Link -- you can search by symptom and maybe you'll find something that matches up with your problems. At least you could find a couple possibilities...
  14. Yes--you really shouldn't take that medicine. Gluten causes or has caused mood swings in many of us here--myself included--and eliminating all gluten should, on its own, help it. It may take a few weeks, but it's worth it if you can solve the problem.
  15. Sorry I didn't go into it more and can't right now--have to get off the computer . Many people, as you would see at their website, couldn't get better, even on special diets--this goes for various problems such as crohns disease, but has also worked for some celiacs. It's a very challenging diet to implement--it cuts out processed foods nearly altogether...
  16. I like the Chebe bread mix as a pizza crust. Don't know about using it for actual bread.....
  17. Try the Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD)....strack2004 is a great source of information. Try pming her for information on this if she doesn't read this post--
  18. KL Terry, First off, when you change your signature, it will update in every post...just so you know . I think your problem is about not closing open tags. First, type whatever you want to say, then highlight whatever you want and make it a different color, change the font, etc. When you're done, it should say Open Tags: 0 at the top, where you can...
  19. Aww...sorry, I forgot to mention--all the information seems to be for the US--since it mentions the states the restaurants are in, all the "regions" that they get a sampling of restaurants from are in the US, etc. I apologize to all my friends to the north for getting your hopes up
  20. Yes-- Prilosec OTC is gluten-free. I took it for weeks when my doctor suspected that I might be having trouble with acids or something.
  21. I posted this under the duplicate at first, so I just copy and pasted it and deleted the other one. 1. Male 2. 14 3. Caucasian 4. 13 5. Initially, I didn't even know what celiac was, and since it was a "disease", I was scared, confused, etc. Once I educated myself, a little overwhelmed, but determined to feel better. 6. Yes-...
  22. P.S. You must have Adobe Reader version 6.0 or higher to view this. The latest version can be downloaded for free at Open Original Shared Link
  23. Hi, This was too good not to share--besides posting a lot here and lurking at the Delphi forum, I get the "daily digest" of messages from a couple Yahoo Groups. From one of them, known as Open Original Shared Link (not to be confused with USA Silly-Yaks, Jessica's group), I got a 108 page Adobe file from the owner--a massive, wonderful food guide...
  24. Biopsies are not 100% accurate. If you get a positive result, that's usually pretty accurate, but if it comes out negative, you should not rule out celiac disease. Like you said, the damage can be in another area. So even if the samples they take show no damage, there could be a different section where the villi are completely gone. Also, if you have...
  25. On an NPR radio thing a few months ago, Dr. Green said that he expected a treatment for celiac within the next ten years--not actually a cure, but, for example, a pill so that if you accidentally ingest gluten, it won't do as much damage--that sort of thing. But if we got that sooner....or by 2015 had something even better than treatment for accidents...
