  1. Any time you eat any processed food there's a chance gluten slipped in, but I would think with the vanilla ice cream the chances would be very slim. Any chance there were bread crumbs in the jam? richard
  2. Actually, Kroger does not have a list of its gluten-free products. They are very good about telling you when you call with a specific item, but there's no list. richard
  3. If your son is allergic but doesn't have celiac, it's always possible he can return to eating wheat. People sometimes "outgrow" allergies. Nobody outgrows celiac, though. richard
  4. Everybody's different, but generally speaking children heal faster and more completely than adults. Your child should be fine. richard
  5. I wouldn't worry about the gloves (usually cornstarch if anything) or tools. If they clean, tell them to use plain unflavored pumice (or take your own toothpaste). If you have to be numbed avoid the topical numbing agent unless you can check it out. richard
  6. Annatto is gluten-free. This was an old falsehood from the CSA. richard
  7. Kraft isn't the only company that will clearly list gluten. Here's a list of some that will either list gluten or, in some cases, wheat. But it's my understanding that wheat is what we have to worry about in natural flavors. Some of these companies are actually Kraft subsidiaries. Balance Baskin Robbins Ben & Jerry Betty Crocker Blue Bunny Butterball...
  8. Papaya in any form is supposed to help. richard
  9. Anybody who uses a shopping guide needs to remember that every guide is potentially outdated as soon as it's printed. You can probably find guides that say Corn Pops is gluten-free even though they've added wheat now. The CSA guide that's available right now has information that's a year or more old. Your best bet is to learn what companies clearly list...
  10. If you have DH andd celiac you don't need to just "try" going gluten-free, you NEED to go gluten-free. While one crumb of gluten will not flatten all your villi, continued exposure to gluten can slowly make you sicker and sicker. You also remain more likely to develop certain cancers and other autoimmune diseases. It's possible you could go along for years...
  11. More and more the standard is to avoid the second endoscopy. Negative or improved follow-up blood tests and improvement on the diet are now considered proof you're getting better and the villi have healed. If you DO have the second one, it should be more like a year after starting, but I personally wouldn't do it. richard
  12. I replaced some old scratched up plastic that you could see was stained but kept using the newer stuff. richard
  13. Sudden weight loss and "laziness" -- which actually might just be fatigue because you aren't getting the nutrients you need -- are two of the classic symptoms of celiac disease. richard
  14. All wine is gluten-free. Many hard ciders. Most liquors are in fact gluten-free because distilling removes the harmful proteins. For certain all Bacardi rums (haven't found a rum that isn't gluten-free), all Sminoff vodkas, Jack Daniels, Bailey's Irish Whiskey, all tequilas. Many more. But beer is NOT gluten-free. richard
  15. Also sounds positive to me. richard
  16. They didn't want the bill at least in part because it didn't require companies to clearly list barley, rye and oats (there are other reasons but I don't pretend to understand them all). The rest of the celiac community decided to go with the bill that passed because it became apparent that any insistence on listing barley, rye and oats would kill the allergen...
  17. You're not going to find barley, rye or oats in hidden in soy sauce. Wheat is the problem there, and as far as I've found it's always been clearly listed. richard
  18. celiac3270, Yes it was malnourishment that nearly killed me. I didn't, however, suffer for months or years -- the effects came on suddenly. It was like I had a flu that wouldn't go away with fevers of up to 105. After 11 days of that and a weight loss of 20 pounds my doctor put me in the hospital. By that time I could barely walk by myself and I was too...
  19. 1) I went to the Heinz web site & it says there EZ Marinade only the Mr.Yoshidas Teriyaki is Gluten Free so I bought it but when I read the ingredients it has soy sauce so how could it be? Not all soy sauces have wheat. LaChoy, Kroger, San J wheat free tamari and Angustura (sp??) are all gluten-free. Apparently the soy sauce is this profuctis, too...
  20. You should always call the company and ask them before you start taking something. That's the best way to do it. The rexallsundown web site has a toll-free number. richard
  21. I think I understand a little better anyway, although I'm a confirmed carnivore. As I said my first post, you can indeed have soy sauce, you just have to make sure it doesn't have wheat. Kikkoman DOES have wheat. in addition, V8 is gluten-free. Your problem, of course, is the flour part. I have yet to find a gluten-free flour or bread that has to same texture...
  22. I'm really confused as to what you're talking about. Can you tell us what's in this? What's vege noobs? I can answer one thing. You do not have to stay away from soy sauce completely, but you do have to check. Some have wheat and some don't. In the U.S. LaChoy, Kroger and Agnostura are gluten-free. So is the wheat-free San J tamari (they also make one...
  23. Have her try the Gluten Intolerance Group at www.gluten.net. There's contact information. Personally, I find the CSA nearly useless. They were even opposed to the recently passed allergy ingredient bill. richard
  24. If blood and biopsy were positive you have it. False positives are extremely rare for either test and almost unknown when both are positive. I also haven't reacted when I've eaten gluten by accident but I don't doubt I have it. It nearly killed me. Literally. richard

Actually there are a lot of people with celiac disease who don't react at all contamination or mistakes. I'm one. A few months ago I mistakenly bought the wrong flavor of a beef jerky and ate most of the large package before I realzied I had bought the one with wheat starch in it. A really stupid mistake but I had no obvious negative reaction of any kind...
