ARCHIVED Now I Know I'm Celiac, Do I Screen My Children?
Sarah8793 replied to Sarah8793's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Thanks for your thoughts. I feel the same way about wanting to protect my kids from having health issues with this later. At first I thought having them go gluten free would be awful for them, but then it occured to me that it might actually be easier for them as children to adapt. I'm going to talk with our pediatrician the next time I see him and then... -
I am sooo upset right now! I should have known better then to assume no wheat ingredients means gluten free. As I read the ingredients it said organic rolled oats and malt extract. I've also had the lemon Luna bar in the last few days and am wondering now if that was a mistake also. Live and learn and get sick I guess.

ARCHIVED Now I Know I'm Celiac, Do I Screen My Children?
Sarah8793 posted a topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I know now that I have the 2 main celicac genes in addition to malabsorption and symptoms. So logically I am now wondering about my children. I have a 7 year old son and a 4 year old daughter. My 7 year old doesn't have any digestive symptoms, but he does have mild anxiety that comes and goes, he will wet the bed if drinking water before bed, and he is... -
ARCHIVED Do You Have Exams For Bone Density And Other Tests?
Sarah8793 replied to Sarah8793's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Thank you Ursula. I'm glad I can have my regular doc do them. I just saw a neurologist and he had my B12 checked and liver and tyroid. The thyroid results are not in but the others are within the normal ranges. I am concerned about calcium because I am casein intolerant. Do you take a calcium supplement? I also recently had blood sugar checked and found... -
ARCHIVED Do You Have Exams For Bone Density And Other Tests?
Sarah8793 posted a topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I just finished reading Dangerous Grains. In the book the authors reccomend getting a bone density test done every so many years and various other tests if you have celiac disease. I'm just wondering if any of you do this, and if you do what kinds of tests and how often do you have them? I don't want to neglect other health issues related to this. Sarah -
ARCHIVED New To Celiac...now What?
Sarah8793 replied to Irishgirl's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Welcome, Everything that needs to be avoided is overwhelming at first and learning to eat differently does require a lot of experimentation and patience. Once you go completely gluten free you will be eating in a much more healthy way and over time you will lose the craving for all of the foods you mentioned. Your tastes will change once your body... -
You just described what I am going through now. Except I would add a weak and heavy feeling in my legs and arms. I have been hoping it is due to only having gone gluten free 7 weeks ago. All of it just came out of nowhere a week ago. My regular doctor referrred me to a neurologist who says he can't find anything wrong or concerning but is checking my...

ARCHIVED Please Help Me With Meaning Of My Enterolab Results
Sarah8793 replied to Sarah8793's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi Gayle, My tests came to a total of $569. I did the gene panel, the egg, soy and yeast, and the gluten sensitivity. I asked others on this board a while back if anyone had insurance cover it and lo and behold some had. They told me to go through my doctor. So I called my insurance company and they told me they would cover pretty much anything... -

Hi Mia, Thank you for all of the tips! I've bookmarked the site you gave and will definitely be getting some gluten-free/cf chocolate! I was a chocolate lover in the days before all of this. I'm going to look for the ghee. Right now I am using the organic Smart Balance spreadable butter- It is gluten-free and cf. I'll be trying the almond milk and... -
ARCHIVED Please Please Please Help Me
Sarah8793 replied to wzcbj's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I too can relate! I noticed while keeping a food journal that whenever I had wheat bread I would get short of breath and had more trouble talking. My husband said I sounded anxious because I was so breathy talking. I was having to stop mid sentence to inhale so I could keep talking. I have been gluten free now for almost 2 months and it doesn't happen... -
ARCHIVED Are There Any Foods At Mexican Restaurants That Are Generally Safe?
Sarah8793 replied to Sarah8793's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
I think TRUE Mexican restaurant is the key. I called my favorite mexican restaurant (than I used to eat at pre gluten free) and asked about their chips. Manager said the chips were gluten free but when I asked about using a dedicated fryer, he said no they don't. Soooo, the chips are not gluten free. Thanks again for the ideas! Sarah -

Thanks Ursula, AndreaB, and Pauliina. Thanks Brian for explaining the alleles. That makes sense now. But I still don't understand what the numbers after the alleles mean and what the suptype after the genes mean? Also does anyone know what this statement mean? You have an autoimmune reaction to the human enzyme tissue transglutaminase, secondary... -

I know to be certain I need to ask them at the restaurant, but I need a starting point of foods that lend themselves in a mexican restaurant to be gluten free. Any ideas? Thanks! Sarah -

Hi Leah, I have been painting for a few days, so that could be a possibility. hmmm. Maybe when we are done painting all will resolve. Thanks, Sarah Thanks. I think I will watch for improvement now that we are done painting, and then if none I will stop the calcium. Sarah It isn't tender to touch, more like a fatigued feel. My... -
ARCHIVED Gluten Free And Still Miserable
Sarah8793 replied to Gentleheart's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Blanchemae, I haven't been formally diagnosed as celiac yet, am awaiting enterolab results. BUT I am diagnosed with hypoglycemia. My main symptom of hypo is dizziness. I also occasionally get heart flutters, but since going off caffeine, artificial sweetners and msg, they have almost completely disappeared. Have you thought about having a glucose tolerance... -

For the last 3 days I have been taking a new calcium supplement. I called company and they said that although they don't add gluten, they can't guaruntee that gluten doesn't cross contaminate in their factory. Anyway I have had a headache that won't go away and my legs feel heavy and sometimes a little numb. I lifted my arm to paint in the living room... -

Sarah8793 replied to Sarah8793's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Thank you for clearing this up for me. Looks like they are a no-no for me. Sarah -
HI, I am planning on making a fruit salad. I'd like to use cool whip but cant have milk anything. I don't understand why cool whip is called non-dairy but has milk in it Anyway, I read online that many of the off-brand coolwhips do not contain milk. Before I got to the store can anyone confirm this? Thanks!! Sarah

ARCHIVED Why Are Friends, Family And Others So Uncomfortable W/gluten Restriction?
Sarah8793 replied to Sarah8793's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Nini, While I agree totally with your suggestion and feel the same way, I know (based on her relationship with her controlling husband) that if I did this it would be the end of our friendship. Yes, I know what you all are thinking when I say this. That she isn't a true friend and this is quite possible. Our children are the same ages and best friends... -
ARCHIVED Why Are Friends, Family And Others So Uncomfortable W/gluten Restriction?
Sarah8793 replied to Sarah8793's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
This sounds sooo much like what I am dealing with. The same friend that I spoke of in this post has invited us over for a cook out on the 4th. They are grilling steaks which they marinate first. I offered to bring my own (marinated in my own wheat free soy sauce) for them to grill. But she said no, her husband wants to be the "provider of the steaks"... -
ARCHIVED Obscure Noises, Burning
Sarah8793 replied to Lister's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Lister, Sounds like milk isn't the problem then. Okay, well here is another suggestion. Before I found out it was milk for me last summer I was sure I had an ulcer. Before I had the upper gi done I took a breath test for the helicobacter (probably not spelled right) bacteria. This is the main cause for ulcers in people and cause a lot of problems.... -
ARCHIVED Obscure Noises, Burning
Sarah8793 replied to Lister's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Lister, Last summer I was having the burning rumbling pain in my stomach you mention and it never bothered me at night either. As soon as I got up and started moving through the day,it started again. Eating large meals gave me relief too. I was sure I had an ulcer! Had an upper GI done, and doc said no sign of ulcer but the lining of my stomach looked...
