Trials, Tribulations, and Revelations from a new celiac

You, Too?

Whenever people inquire about why I don't eat bread or why I'm eating what I'm eating, I give a generic response that I'm allergic to flour and it's hidden in everything---Just so people don't think I'm another FRUITY or NUTTY California Tree hugger and/or hypochondriac. But some people ask more about it and then I explain that it's not an anaphylactic allergy and that it's a genetic disease that is highly undiagnosed due to the wide range of symptoms and the ignorance of doctors who misdiag

Dinner N Dancing

Hmmm. Going to El Torito tonight. Haven't been there since going "against the grain" or "wheatless". I like refried beans, rice, and chips and guacamole. Will probably get tamales or tacos with corn tortillas. I'm thinking cross contamination will be the big scare factor here. Only one way to find out. The scariest part is going dancing afterward. Maybe I'll put some stomach med. in the car just in case. I"ve had more energy lately, so I should be ready to shake my boo-tay. I ate s

How I Stay Fit

I don't drink coffee, eat fattening things like cheesecake/creme brulee, fast food, or much red meat. But I DO claim sugar as my vice. After 10 years of teaching, I'm the same size, and colleagues often ask me how I do it. Here are some ideas as well as Things I do to trim down for bikini season (my summer clothes are a size smaller than my winter ones- it's a midwestern thing, we're very season-oriented): Make sure you're only eating until you're NOT HUNGRY anymore, then GET UP (I feel

Fooled The Experts

My celiac support group was SHOCKED about Lawry's seasoning salt glutening me. They seemed in disbelief, so they looked it up in the celiac's gluten free product list and it wasn't listed in there! I can't believe I was right! It's very nice how they have a book cart full of celiac and gluten free books for checkout. I checked out Against the Grain, which is supposed to be funny as well as informative.Bringing a dish for work breakfast Friday: deviled eggs with bacon and cheddar! Bringing a

Not So Tempting Turkey Day

Gobble Gobble wibble wobble. Thanksgiving for me is mouth watering memories of biscuits, pie, stuffing, etc. all homemade by Grandma. It's just not the same Gluten Free. Last year I ate with my boyfriend's Irish family. Not only does it SUCK watching everyone else eat the goodies, it REALLY is ANNOYING that there's ALWAYS some celiac ignorant person (in this case, his cousin a cook in a restaurant) trying to push food on me that I can't eat and refusing to take a simple no for an answer, wanti

Good Eats

They took second helpings! The Japanese Rice Coconut Pudding turned out fine. It looked and tasted like oatmeal with cinnamon in it. I guess, since oatmeal isn't something we get to eat, it was a happy coincidence. Although I did read about some type of oat that has a low enough level of gluten.... I have been dealing with somewhat of a dilemma. The detective calls himself finicky. He doesn't have the affinity for fresh fruit and veggies like I do (lots of men are that way, aren't they? Th

Back In The Saddle

I was watching Men In Trees (rerun) and the Asian lady said her husband has a "gluten allergy" really casually right in the dialogue and it fit right in the storyline. It was SO COOL!! I realize most celiacs know it's not an allergy, but that is a word the general public understands. Also, I went to Rubio's Baja Fresh and the guy at the counter pulled out an allergen list and told me to keep it, he brought out the marinade container (without me asking) to let me see the ingredients, then had

Celiac Challenges Chicago

I chomped pizza, guzzled beer, savored chocolate fondue, crunched Emeril's popcorn candy bundt cake, sipped Tom & Jerry's, and slurped yogurt shakes. Yeah, Ba-Bay! I think I gained a few pounds! My clothes aren't loose! There's actually a GOOD side to my stepdad having OCD...I got my own miniature butter for my stay and they only use squeezable jelly and there are never crumbs in or on anything!!!!!Plus my mom has a pan in which they only cook eggs, so she used that to cook my food in.

Eating Out Once A Day

Since I was out of town with family for two weeks, I ate out once a day, on average. I was kinda excited to visit Steak N Shake and Famous Dave's, Carnivale, and Lou Malnati's Pizza, none of which are available in California where I am. Steak N Shake. Good bunless burger. Not allowed to eat the fries, fryers not designated. GREAT new Strawberry Banana Real Fruit Frozen Yogurt Shakes! MMMMmmmm We had a coupon and YUM-O. I felt so NORMAL and back with the real people when I got to eat gluten

Hilariously Horrible Holiday Gifts I've Received

I'm sure I'm not the perfect gift giver, and I don't want to seem ungracious, because these gifts give me great stories to tell and I've often regifted them to people who hopefully appreciated them or could use them. I'm sure everyone meant well upon giving them...almost everyone. I really do crack myself up when I recount them. Here they are in the order they occur to me: 1. A size 14 (in Girls-child- size) fake velvet dress-from a student who probably and misguidedly expected me to wear it.

More Celiac Antics From The Trip

Made my first gallavant to the GIANT liquor Mart in the small town my mom lives in. I joyfully discovered the New Grist in the back and paid for it while the 'rents shopped for cheapo wine for the New Year. As I stood waiting, a woman with a MULLET approaches me and gabs on and on about the coupon she just got to get a rebate on the giant bottle of the hard liquor the she just bought. And I just stared. At the mullet. And wondered how I could stealthily take a photo of it with my cell phone.

S'mores! And More

Kinnickinnick gluten-free Graham Crackers + chocolate + marshmallows = Yum to the Oh Yeah! I never thought my trigger would be tripped by a plain ol' graham cracker! I have yet to master the way I got it once to be soft and warm in the microwave. They are no where near chalky. So nice. Unfortunately, I also laid my hands on some Andean Dream Quinoa Cookies-yuck...aside from $ down the drain, they're a waste of calories in the sweets allowance, so I spit it out. Also sampled St. Amour Bro

Planet Smush

While my relationship is still heaven on earth, my delectable detective has been nurturing me through my latest health slump. I don't need ear surgery (no fluid), but the specialist says I have TMJ, which is caused by stress and my high-strung personality. I do not grind my teeth (like many TMJ sufferers), however, I do clench my jaw when I'm stressed (I'd never really noticed until I made an emergency pitstop at a gas station only to find an "out of order" sign on the restroom door, and real

I Shot The Sheriff!

A former date, pursuer, wooer, love interest, whatever you may call him. the deputy sheriff. Aside:::I have lots of dating rules. Here's one: I don't date doctors, lawyers, self-employed, unemployed, salesmen, pilots, or law enforcement. But, I never say never, either. Upon my new 2005 freedom, I pledged to date one of everything. And. I. Did. So. Back 2 sheriff story. We were set up by his EX wife. Yeah, how d'ya like them apples? Electronic Edibility

I broke down and paid $30ish for the downloadable gluten free food list. Last winter I got a used palm pilot online for $30ish, so I could try out this program and see how much easier my gluten free life could be. So, now that I finally did it and have been using it for a month or two, I'll tell you how it is. It's not too great. It was quick and easy to download. The palm is easy to use. It lists restaurant foods, too. The foods listed show whether they have gluten or not, how they were

Tofu Yum-e

I got FAT over Xmas! Two weeks in IL with Gramma and MOM cooking "special" for me and mom& her bf taking me out to eat (they'd go twice a day, not me- once a day was my eat-out limit!) But, I felt like I had to eat the desserts my gram made--a little each day, since nobody else ate any "special" food. 9 lbs later, my clothes are tight! But now I've lost 4 of the pounds already. Just being back to my normal routine and workouts. But having a big fat bust is kinda fun! Every time I look d

Crunchy, Chewy

Hooray for chewing! I'm off the soft- food- only diet! Immediately had the detective transport me to the fair and crunched up some corn on the cob, a PINK'S hot dog (bunless), and I wanted a caramel apple, but detective warned it's too crunchy and too chewy. Oh, well. Off prednasone and on 800 mg of ibuprofen, I got so dizzy at work. Now have to cut the pills in half so I can function. Here's what I ate today: Gluten free and not terribly crunchy:Yogurt diet lemonade drink bacon cheesebur

Whatta Day

Unfortunately for me I was ahead on a project at work and what does one of my teammates do? He tells the boss we'll be done a week early!-Meaning I had to work nonstop and late to finish it in time for Monday and so did the secretary. whatta jerk. THEN, I'm driving home and there's an ambulance, so I pull over. I'm looking in the rearview at the PT Cruiser behind me and she pulls over, too BUT THEN she hits my car! I think I'm ok, and there didn't appear to be damage, but I wrote the info.do

Sides Of Me...

Gluten-Free Me... ...gives Mucho Kudos to Chex Cereal (recently gone gluten free) for listing an informational blurb on the side of its box now that explains celiac disease as a "multi-symptom autoimmune disorder...estimated 1 in 133 Americans suffer from...", and it goes on to list a celiac website and has the logo for the Celiac Disease Foundation. ...got to participate in a luncheon at work! It was "build a salad". I can't say I liked it that much. I like expensive stuff, like spinach, r

Turkey Week-i Could Make A Movie From This.

Totally Gluten-Free turkey day again, but this time at my house with my Major's mother and my mom&stepdad all in from FL We did lots of fix-it stuff on my new house (bank repo) Parents woke at 4am (FL time 7am) and went to 24 hr Wal-Mart to buy me "appropriate" dishes and silverware (mine isn't heavy enough) for my belated birthday gifts. My stepdad forgot to take his blood pressure meds on Tuesday (day 3)and blew his top and went MIA in the rental car. Didn't hear from him till Wed.

Chowdah

It was my first trip to New England and I went to Boston, New Hampshire, and Maine. Aside from paddling kayaks (boy, am I still strong!), riding the subway, railroad train, ferries, and water taxis, kissing by lighthouses, getting Witchy in Salem, Mass., and generally being a tourist, I ate at several gluten free establishments recommended by someone on the site. The results were so-so. I ate at Legal Seafoods in the Boston Logan Airport and this was the BEST! They had gluten free menu and I

Gluten Free Living, Southern Style!

New Digs! Southern hospitality is alive and well in Atlanta: neighborhood barbeques, strangers who chat and wave, and amazing food everywhere! We've been officially "peached". The peach jam, peach salsa, and peaches are all fabulous, but here's what else I've been dining on (while maintaining the ten pound weight loss I just achieved): Gluten Free Shopping List: The Super Target here has several gluten free products like my favorite Glutino chocolate peanut granola bars

Bday Cake, Girls Weekend, And Holiday Parties

I had coconut cake, cupcakes, and brownies for my birthday. My best friend was going to be in Vegas for my bday, and so she invited me and I invited my other friend from New Orleans. It was so fun. My Major was still away, so it was perfect for just girls. My bff carried 2 bakery boxes on the plane from Texas! (From Lil' Aussie Bakery in San Antonio-2die4.) I am so lucky! She eats gluten free stuff with me, and she also orders it when she's out, just to try it for me and to keep up the de

No More Stitches

Thanks again to:*drum roll* HEREDITY! *applause* Thanks to my genes, I-- (like my mom this time ((celiac's from dad)))-- needed a gum graft. Mom said it was awful pain and not to do it. Hers fell off anyway. So I told the guy he had one shot to make it work. TALK ABOUT DISGUSTING! Embarrassingly enough, I think I had my first panic attack during this one-hour procedure. Growing up without insurance (below the poverty line), I needed lotsa dental work once I grew up and got insurance. So, t
