Celiac.com 10/16/2009 - With the downturn in our economy, it is certainly not news that many more Americans are needing to rely on food pantries and soup kitchens to feed themselves.  It is also not news that restricted diets, especially the gluten free diet, are very expensive.  If you need to eat "special" foods and cannot afford to pay for them, where do you turn?
I have communicated with several people recently who are in this predicament.  One woman reported that, when she explained her food allergies and intolerance to her local food pantry, they replied, "If you are hungry enough, you'll eat it" - referring to foods that contain unsafe ingredients.  This made my stomach turn.  Although much work has been done in recent years to educate the public about food allergies, into...

The Specific Carbohydrate Diet and the Two Percent Solution
Celiac.com 05/03/2010 - Place a single tiny droplet of food coloring on a solid surface, a small plate will do nicely. Don't move it or touch it. What happens? Usually nothing.
Do the same thing in a saucer of water and now what happens? The color spreads and permeates the water.
This similar to the effects of eating a tiny amount of food restricted from your Celiac diet.  I follow The Specific Carbohydrate Diet and it demands scrupulous attention to the kind of food I use and what is in it.
The reason is that minuscule amounts of what we consider "The Undigestibles," feed bad gut bacteria, strengthen them, allow them to multiply and subdue friendly bacteria, all at the expense of a compromised digestive system.
There are ways to determine food ingredients. We have all become ...

Celiac.com 08/23/2013 - Previous studies have noted the presence of dental enamel defects in people with celiac disease.
A team of researchers recently set out to study the prevalence of dental enamel defects in adults with celiac disease, and to determine if there is in fact a connection between the grade of teeth lesion and clinical parameters present at the time of diagnosis of celiac disease.
The research team included L.Trotta, F. Biagi, P.I. Bianchi, A. Marchese, C. Vattiato, D. Balduzzi, V. Collesano, and G.R. Corazza.
They are affiliated with the Coeliac Centre/First Department of Internal Medicine at the Fondazione IRCCS Policlinico San Matteo at the University of Pavia in Italy.
The team looked at 54 celiac disease patients who had undergone dental examination. The...

What Brands of Professional Dental Care Products are Gluten-Free?
Celiac.com 03/09/2022 - Many people, and even dental professionals, are not aware that gluten can also be present in some types of oral prostheses and appliances, specifically those made with a popular acrylic resin called methyl methacrylate (MMA). Being exposed to gluten at the dentist's office is a common complaint on our celiac disease and gluten-free forum. A number of readers have asked for a list of gluten-free dental products.
Orthodontic retainers, fixed and removable dentures, temporary crowns, and denture repair material are types of products typically made with MMA. It was discovered in recent years that the non-dietary gluten found in MMA can trigger symptoms in patients with celiac disease and should be avoided. Since many companies do not label products as gluten-free,...
