Little Northern Bakehouse: De-stress Back-to-school Lunch for Gluten-free Kids

Reviewed and edited by a celiac disease expert.

Back to school can be tough for gluten-free kids (and kids with food allergies, too).

Celiac.com 09/01/2025 - Especially when they’re young or newly diagnosed.

There’s understandable worry about accidental contact—even when food-sharing rules are followed and teachers make handwashing part of the fun, being a kid is a full-contact sport. Their personal space bubbles are small. Little kids lick things (…sometimes each other!). And there are unexpected places where gluten plays hide-and-seek at school. Like playdough. Or papier-mâché. Or macaroni necklaces. Or lickable stickers.

    Celiac.com Sponsor (A12):
Learning all the things they need to avoid—hopefully by being taught what’s safe, and not the hard way of feeling ill after accidental contact—is stressful enough. But on top of that, there’s the very real anxiety around feeling different.

Kids want to fit in. It takes a lot of love, positive reinforcement, time, and maturity to embrace the idea that being your own, one-of-a-kind self is what makes our world beautiful. Gluten-free kids can feel left out by having to eat differently than everyone else in the class. And there’s a sad-but-real risk they’ll be teased or bullied for how they need to eat—something that takes a compassionate and supportive village of teachers, administrators, friends, and family to solve.

Back to school can be tough for parents of gluten-free kids, too.

There’s 504 Plans to figure out (or whatever your state or province’s allergy legislation calls for). There’s the new-year, new-teacher talk to make sure they understand your kid’s unique needs, and to start the year with the lines of communication open—both in case of accidental contact, and so you can send safe treats ahead of classroom celebrations and field trips.

There’s the hard work of supporting your gluten-free child through their (normal and totally valid) feelings about being different. There’s teaching them how to graciously say “No thank you” in social situations to food that’s not safe for them to eat. As they get older, there’s also teaching them how to read labels and navigate restaurant menus—not to mention adults and peers who might dismiss the seriousness of their condition when they try to make food choices that are right for them.

And then there’s the everyday stress of packing lunch.

All parents struggle to send their kids to school with a lunch that’s nutritious and their kids will actually eat. (We don’t have statistics, but an educated guess that more kids are picky eaters than are not doesn’t feel far-fetched!). Parents of gluten-free kids get the extra fun of doing all of that, gluten-free—and trying to send something that respects your child’s longing to feel normal.

And that’s one small way Little Northern Bakehouse can help take some of the stress out of back-to-school lunch for you and your gluten-free kid. When you pack a nut-free butter and jam sandwich made with our White Wide Slice bread, you’re giving them a lunch that looks and tastes just like their friends’ lunches. Paired with apple slices, carrot sticks, and a small, sweet, gluten-free treat (like raisins or chocolate chips), they’ll enjoy a moment of freedom to just be a regular kid with a non-weird lunch.

Now there’s a little lunch box love note that can be read at any grade level.

Sure. We make baked goods that aren’t just good for gluten-free, they’re good, period—because we believe you shouldn’t have to give up taste and texture when you go without gluten. We also make them with empathy.

Because people living with celiac, gluten-intolerance, and food allergies deserve all the joy of the real thing. No matter what age they are.

    Guest Fantastic Bread!

    Posted

I recently went to a restaurant and had a reuben on this bread and it was awesome! Even though the sauerkraut and Russian dressing add moisture to a reuben, the bread stayed together and was delicious! I asked our server if she could find out what kind of bread they used, and she happily told me and said many people had asked about it.

I will definitely check my local WalMart to see if they carry it!

Their products may be gluten free but they are not corn free for those who must avoid corn.  So it's a no-go for me.

This bread line is my family’s new favorite.  Best of all, no Xanthan gum which means I can eat it too!  I had a delicious grill cheese sandwich with sliced tomatoes (fresh from my garden) for lunch today.

    Gluten-Free Grocery Store Bread Reviewed
Celiac.com 11/17/2015 - For most people, when they think of gluten, the first thing that comes to mind is bread. And for most people with celiac or a gluten sensitivity, that is what we miss most.
While people with celiac or gluten sensitivity may never be able to experience the wide selection or soft texture that "glutenous" bread offers, there are still some tasty gluten-free bread options available at most grocery stores. In order to find the best gluten-free bread options, I went to my local Giant Eagle and tried all of the gluten-free bread available and explored four main aspects: taste, texture, price, and variety.
The three brands of gluten-free bread offered at Giant Eagle were Schar, Udi's, and Goodbye Gluten.
In the variety category, Udi's offered the largest selection...

GliadinX AN-PEP Enzymes Break Down Gluten in the Gut - A Product Review
GliadinX is a dietary supplement with the highest concentration of AN-PEP, Prolyl Endopeptidase (Aspergillus Niger), the most effective enzyme proven to break down gluten in the stomach. This high potency enzyme formulation is specifically designed to break down gliadin, and unlike other enzyme formulas that claim to do the same, there is a growing body of research that backs up the effectiveness of GliadinX (see Sources below).
GliadinX does not prevent and is not a cure for celiac disease, however, extensive scientific research has been conducted at multiple medical centers which has shown that it effectively breaks down gliadin into small, harmless fragments before it can reach the small intestine. GliadinX is perfect for celiacs who still want to eat outside of their home, and...

Alice's Sweet Tooth creates an amazing assortment of naturally gluten-free kiss-sized meringues, including blueberry, raspberry, mango, chocolate chip, vanilla bean and cocoa. Each variety exactly captures its essence, the blueberry flavor explodes with the taste of fresh blueberries, the mango flavor tastes like fresh mangoes...and the raspberry flavor tastes like real raspberries, right down to the slight tartness that all raspberries have.
These meringues will melt in your mouth...there is just no need to bite them...just pop one in your mouth and let it melt on your tongue! If your plan is to only eat one or two...

Now Find Gluten Free – A Product Review
Celiac.com 11/02/2018 - I recently downloaded Now Find Gluten Free, which is a free app that is available in the Apple iTunes Store, and it can also be downloaded for other platforms in the Google Play Store.
One thing about the app that was immediately noticeable was its simple, user-friendly interface.  From the home page one can browse “All Products,” or browse by “Brands” or “Categories,” and there are even “Fresh Goods” and “Coupons” areas so you can quickly find fresh items and get great deals on many items.
At the top of the screen is a search box so you can search all products to quickly find exactly what you are looking for. I searched for “pancake” and was impressed by the large number of gluten-free pancake mixes that were displayed, broken down neatly in alphabetic...
