Going Back To Gastro! Help!

Guest DanceswithWolves

Well, I'm going back to my Gastrologist tomorrow for a second appointment. Not sure what to ask him.

He told me a month ago to eat whatever I want because all I have is IBS.

So, I've been doing just that.

I still belch quite a bit, especially if I eat or drink anything too fast or that has air in it. I haven't really gained any weight back in a month since my last visit.

I wake up in the morning practically starving. Gurgling stomach too. When I eat, it seems I'm never really full. I eat about three bowls of cereal, toast and a banana with some hot tea for the road.

My arms and legs are still very lean. I have no butt anymore either! I haven't been exercising that much because I don't want to burn off the calories that took me so long to put on.

I drink Ensure and even have a candy bar now and then.

I'll post again after the appointment. I'm sure I'll hear nothing but sarcasm tomorrow. :(

Chill, chill, chill.........I am one of the buttless people on the site. Keep an open mind and see what the Gastro Dr. suggests. To try to find the reason for all of this can truely be frustrating. I also have very lean arms and legs as well.

I know that you have been reading the posts on the sites. I hope that it has been helpful to you. We all seem to struggle with our own personal issues and many are shared and some may be excusive.

I have always found this site to be a genteel, sensitive and giving site for help that has been requested. As you have monitored and added impute, I am sure you know by now that it a mountain of information. Many of the information presented may not pertain to you, but may be a worth of knowledge of others reviewing the site.

I have that you have gleamed some information that may be helpful to you and I am sorry that your responses have not meet your needs.

I hope you well with your Gastro. Dr. and please let us know how you are doing. We are all in one big, big soup pot, tryinjg to find the best comfort.

Good luck, Lisa B.

Thank you.

I just weighed myself again and I am currently at 125lbs.!

I am beginning to wonder if by me cutting out bread and milk as much as I have, really had a reverse effect on my body weight over the last 8 months?

Another chat with the doc is probably best afterall. :)

I just got back from my appointment.

Apparently the only thing "wrong" with me is I have Gilbert's Syndrome.

According to my Gastrologist, I do not have Celiac disease judging by my results.

He said my stool tests would have showed no fat absorption if I had Sprue.

He also said that most celiacs will consume massive amounts of food and not gain weight.

Since I did put on a little weight since my last visit, he is confirming that I do not have it.

He also said I should be consuming about 3000 calories a day based on my height, age and current weight.

I explained about the pain that I get in my lower right side after I eat sometimes or have a bowel movement and he explained pointed out that IBS does cause that.

When I made the decision to stop eating bread and other foods and factor in the stress level of my old job, that's when I started to drop the weight.

So, all I can do is keep eating.

I did mention to him that my parents were going to get tested for Celiac anyway, since they knew nothing of it until I started researching it.

I guess that's all for now....

I'll probably visit an allergist next just to get some answers about my allergies that I aways seem to have.

Later!

:)

Don't know about "Celiacs eat a massive amount of food" . I haven't had an appitite for about five years now and I was dig about 2 1/2 months now. I am 5'8" and weigh about 123lbs. I have to remind myself to eat so that I can get those good old nutrients in the bod.

I have done my best to be gluten-free for that time since dig. and this is the third day in a row that I have not had the big D after lunch.........slow but making progress.

Hope that you GI doc has settle you mind a little. If you go back to eating gluten and begin to feel bad again, there is only one answer. Gluten in not good for you.

Good luck with the allergies.

My appetite is greatly reduced after I have gluten. I didn't have a healthy appeteite the whole time I was sick...I had to force myself to eat so that I wouldnt lose weight but it didnt matter because since I was eating gluten I lost weight anyways.

Welcome to the celiac.com communiuty, @Matthias! Yes, we have been aware that this can be an issue with mushrooms but as long as they are rinsed thoroughly it should not be a problem since the mushrooms don't actually incorporate the gluten into their cellular structure. For the same reason, one needs to be careful when buying aged cheeses and products containing yeast because of the fact that they are sometimes cultured on gluten-containing substrate.

The one kind of food I had been buying and eating without any worry for hidden gluten were unprocessed veggies. Well, yesterday I discovered yet another pitfall: cultivated mushrooms. I tried some new ones, Shimeji to be precise (used in many asian soup and rice dishes). Later, at home, I was taking a closer look at the product: the mushrooms were growing from a visible layer of shredded cereals that had not been removed. After a quick web research I learned that these mushrooms are commonly cultivated on a cereal-based medium like wheat bran. I hope that info his helpful to someone.

I might suggest you consider buckwheat groats. https://www.amazon.com/Anthonys-Organic-Hulled-Buckwheat-Groats/dp/B0D15QDVW7/ref=sr_1_4_pp?crid=GOFG11A8ZUMU&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.bk-hCrXgLpHqKS8QJnfKJLKbKzm2BS9tIFv3P9HjJ5swL1-02C3V819UZ845_kAwnxTUM8Qa69hKl0DfHAucO827k_rh7ZclIOPtAA9KjvEEYtaeUV06FJQyCoi5dwcfXRt8dx3cJ6ctEn2VIPaaFd0nOye2TkASgSRtdtKgvXEEXknFVYURBjXen1Nc7EtAlJyJbU8EhB89ElCGFPRavEQkTFHv9V2Zh1EMAPRno7UajBpLCQ-1JfC5jKUyzfgsf7jN5L6yfZSgjhnwEbg6KKwWrKeghga8W_CAhEEw9N0.eDBrhYWsjgEFud6ZE03iun0-AEaGfNS1q4ILLjZz7Fs&dib_tag=se&keywords=buckwheat%2Bgroats&qid=1769980587&s=grocery&sprefix=buchwheat%2Bgroats%2Cgrocery%2C249&sr=1-4&th=1 Takes about 10 minutes to cook. Incidentally, I don't like quinoa either. Reminds me and smells to me like wet grass seed. When its not washed before cooking it makes me ill because of saponins in the seed coat. Yes, it can be difficult to get much dietary calcium without dairy. But in many cases, it's not the amount of calcium in the diet that is the problem but the poor uptake of it. And too much calcium supplementation can interfere with the absorption of vitamins and minerals in general because it raises gut pH.

What you’re describing really does not read like typical IBS-D. The dramatic, rapid normalization of stool frequency and form after removing wheat, along with improved tolerance of legumes and plant foods, is a classic pattern seen in gluten-driven disease rather than functional IBS. IBS usually worsens with fiber and beans, not improves. The fact that you carry HLA-DQ2.2 means celiac disease is absolutely possible, even if it’s less common than DQ2.5, and many people with DQ2.2 present later and are under-diagnosed. Your hesitation to reintroduce gluten is completely understandable — quality of life matters — and many people in your position choose to remain strictly gluten-free and treat it as medically necessary even without formal biopsy confirmation. If and when you’re ready, a physician can help you weigh options like limited gluten challenge, serology history, or documentation as “probable celiac.” What’s clear is that this wasn’t just random IBS — you identified the trigger, and your body has been very consistent in its response.
