Wedding Etiquette And Other Questions?

We recently (yesterday) returned from my cousin's wedding. My daughter and parents went to the rehearsal dinner at a restaurant where my poor daughter (14.5) somehow got gluten from her gluten free meal which wasn't cheap. The waitstaff told my mom it was gluten free but my daughter said that it didn't really seem that they knew what it meant and seemed impatient with her grandma... I saw her after the dinner and she said she felt like it wasn't and then about 2:00 am woke up and she vomited for hours...

My mom told my uncle what happened and everyone felt bad.

Should she have told him?

Should I contact the restaurant to tell them?

We are generally so careful this doesn't really happen too often.

I was at the reception the next night and pretty much pushed the food around my plate. The caterer said it was gluten free but it didn't seem that it could be possible that they avoided x-contamination as there was so much bread... This meal wasn't cheap either - I think it was $200 a plate (yikes!)

Luckily we don't go to many catered events but next time I would really prefer to bring my own food or eat before. Does the host have to pay for the meal still? Should you just arrive after the dinner is done or sit and not eat? It all seems kind of awkward.

Has this happened to anyone else at a wedding?

Sarah

Thanks.  I'm dealing with many of the same issues for an upcoming family wedding.  I don't know that I would have told the host, but I would definitely tell the caterer.  I really do wonder about the cost per plate - I'd love to offer my cousin that I won't eat at all if she can save the cost of my meal.  Chances are I'll put a banana or another snack in my bag and eat it between the ceremony and reception and then eat nothing there.

Im getting married this Saturday and the caterers have been fantastic about making me a gluten-free dish at no extra cost - if i were you i would contact the host and ask id there is anything that can be done. I know i would be more than happy to make any adjustments i could to make sure my guests get a nice meal - i know im coming from a gluten-free perspective but even before i was gluten-free i would have been sad to think one of my guests couldn't enjoy the day properly too and would do what i could to help x

SasaMinks, Congratulations on your wedding! I really hope the caterers are better than the ones we had. I live in Massachusetts where everyone who serves food has to be trained in food allergy awareness. So, I think we are spoiled so when I say gluten free here folks know what to do (usually - not always) or at least there are lots of restaurants that have systems and food servers trained. The wedding we went to was in Maryland and I don't think folks are as careful.

The caterers at the wedding last weekend were happy to say the meal was gluten free but I was too scared to eat it when I saw all the bread everywhere.

Nikki 2777 I'd suggest you bring your banana and another snack just to be safe. Everyone will be so busy nobody'll mind and you're sure not be really sick that way.

I have trouble with nausea. It often starts when I’m anxious about something (home repairs, sick dog) but continues long after the home is repaired or the dog is healthy again. When it happens I eat less and lose weight.  My gastroenterologist suggested ginger or peppermint tea. I don’t know if that will work or not because I haven't had the problem since she suggested it.

Hello  I'm not sure what to think . Seems no matter what I do I get sick. I had some yogurt with only 2 grams of sugar and is labeled gluten free ...the strawberry version seemed to really set me off My jaw is burning as well as my stomach and my feet.  Horrible pain..plus acid reflux and nausea... sensitivity to touch pain. ..yikes !! I don't know if it's from the lactose in the yogurt or if I'm getting an ulcer  This condition can make you question yourself quite a bit.  Then if you are not sure the anxiety comes 😞 Does any of these symptoms sound familiar to anyone? The neuropathy is quite intense.  What do you eat or drink after this happens  Open to suggestions  Thank you

Of course my son is on a 100% gluten free diet.  I wish his symptoms were not debilitating as there are right now.  He cannot work, even when a miniscule of cross contamination occurs.  It's not just GI distress, but intense fatigue, brain fog, depression, anxiety, insomnia, etc.  It's literally neurological inflammation.  Not to be taken lightly here.  We have sought out many other possible ways to cope during this window of time (8 months!!!!)  without success.   AN-PEP does not help and seems like studies on this are not well researched.  So, we are trying this out because research shows some promising results.  And, all participants showed no cravings afterwards, no signs of addiction.  The patch is different than the oral route such as smoking, vaping, gum, pouch, etc.

Have you tried AN-PEP enzymes, for example, GlutenX (who is a sponsor here)? A lot of research has shown that it can break down small amounts of gluten in the stomach, before it reaches the intestines. It might be a better approach than risking nicotine addiction, and the questionable research around this. I also hope that he’s trying to be 100% Gluten-Free.

Hi all  I was diagnosed Coeliac a few years ago and follow a gluten free diet. The list of foods that I can eat without a problem grows shorter on a weekly basis. [I also have diabetes and asthma also].  BUT the reason I am posting this is because I seem to struggle with nausea quite a lot, which is really quite debilitating, and I was wondering if others suffer from nausea, even if following a gluten free diet.
