Hey everyone,

I am coming to you to see what your experiences have been in weight gain with celiac.

I am one of those who only found out about my celiac after a 35 lb weight gain despite proper diet and exercise. I am a normally very tiny female. I am 30 y/o now 5'0" and until the past 2 years have never been over 110. I am now 142 and keep expanding which I am not happy with to say the least.

I have been gluten free for 4 months now minus 2 unintentional glutenations early on. My thyroid has been fine except reverse t3 was slightly elevated. Cortisol is relatively normal. Gaba and glutamate are super high. Nutritional labs showed me to have been only absorbing 3 amino acids despite eating 150g protein a day and only traces of 3 B vitamins, I was severely malnourished at time of diagnosis. After diagnosis I decided to give myself a couple months of a break and not work out but recently started again (6 weeks ago) in hopes that all this weight would go away. I was working out 6 days a week for at least an hour each day and in 6 weeks I gained 4 lbs and an inch on my waist, 1.5" on my hips and 0.5" on my thighs.

I am currently on the following supplements: dipan 9 pancreatic enzymes, co q 10, DHA, multivitamins high dose, fish oil, r-lipoic acid, super b complex, l-carnitine, NAC,  vitamin D.

I did an HCl challenge to make sure my stomach acid was acid enough for me to break down protein before it hits the small intestine and we confirmed I do have enough.

I currently am eating around 1500-1600 cals a day and aiming for 40% protein 40% carbs 20% fats and trying to eat nothing but whole foods, organic fruit and veggies and lean protein. Minus the big plate of cheese fries I had last night for an emotional eating episode lol. This is very hard for me to be pretty much eating paleo as I am semi-vegetarian and hate eating as much meat as I am.

Any advice? How long did it take you to lose the weight and what did you have to do?

Thank you for your time and thought in this matter.

What are you doing for exercise?

What are you doing for exercise?

I have done insanity, P90X, Tapout XT, plus working out with a personal trainer.

My weight was water as I had a fluid/adrenal gland problem.  I lost 30 lbs with proper nutrients and am still waiting for the water balance to return in full.  I am 5/7 and 155 lbs and began 6 years ago at 190.  I should note that I only went gluten free 18 months ago and the other came off with supplements.  I still have some swelling issues and we are working on hormones and nutrient balance and adrenal support.

Ha!  Michilen woman!  Sometimes, I do feel like a have an innertube around my waist!  It puts pressure on, so it is hard to breath.

I said I feel like the Pillsbury Dough Boy!  Only a girl.

Get well,

lol. Thanks. Based on body impedance I am about as much water as I should be, I just stored a sh*t ton of fat on my waist and abdomen and hips. My body needs to quit being dumb and realize all is good in the neighborhood.

I don't know what body impedance is, can you clarify?

It is possible you can't process fat, so your body is just storing it.

Where you measure your body fat %, bone mass% and water mass %....

When we checked my stools there was not fat in them so it does not seem that I can't process fat... idk. What would one do to find out more about if they can't process fat? The fats I eat are almost completely healthy, like avocados, olive oil, fish... but cheese is my love lol.

I know that I have heard that for those who are the weight gainers as myself and not the waster aways that sometimes you may gain more as your body adjusts to having nutrients available so it kinda hoards them?

Thought was finished with this but a friend just sent email saying she takes Tirosin liquid levothyroxine which has no fillers (mentioned by Pgetha above).  Friend's doc sends script to one of Tirosin's direct-mail pharmacies.  Looking that up, government insurance (Medicare/Medicaid) doesn't cover (as Pgetha wrote above).  But if use one of their direct-mail places three month supply is $57/month.  Researching that, happened to learn Yaral also makes a generic gluten-free levothyroxine.

Lysine is helpful for "cold sores" (oral herpes).

As a life.long celiac, I understand this.  I simply ask that the medical profession stop disregarding the fact that it should remain a concern for some. It cost me a lot of medical discomforts.

@dmallbee, about 8% of celiacs react to the oat protein avenin like they do to the wheat protein gluten. In addition, there are some cultivars of oats that apparently do actually contain gluten.
