5Y/o Having A Flare Up.

My daughter & I are in the process of some sort of diagnosis. She had mouth eczema & we couldn't figure it out. I researched that gluten was a common culprit. While researching her medical issues, I realized I had many adult symptoms. We quit gluten together & both started healing. Her mouth eczema was healed in a week, & my rash is still healing.

She's had a flare up tat has coincided with starting kindergarten. I pack her lunches & her teacher is well aware of her condition. As far as I know, she's still gluten-free. I'm wondering f it's stress related? She as fun in kindergarten, but it can be stressful.

Any advice? Help? I'm taking her to the dr tomorrow, I'm looking for a referral to a specialist at children's.

I think it could be stress related as well as the fact that you are both very early in the healing process. It can take months for the immune response to gluten to settle down, and even longer for the healing to occur. Until then, it's not unusual to experience set-backs for no real reason.

To be sure though, discuss hand washing policies before every snack and meal, and make sure play-dough is very contained and that your daughter washes immediately after being near it.

As for the specialist, if she is to be tested for celiac disease, she must be eating gluten in the weeks prior to testing or results may not be accurate. If her blood is tested for celiac disease, the best tests are:

DGP IgA and IgG

tTG IgA and IgG

EMA IgA

total serum IgA

The first test is very good at picking up celiac disease in kids but it is also the fastest to return to normal on a gluten-free diet. The more tests run the better.

Good luck!

They may want to also eliminate other possible causes for your symptoms/issues and are doing additional tests.  Here is info about blood tests for celiac disease--if positive an endoscopy where biopsies of your intestinal villi are taken to confirm is the typical follow up.

In the Europe the new protocol for making a celiac disease diagnosis in children is if their tTg-IgA (tissue transglutaminase IgA) levels are 10 times or above the positive level for celiac disease--and you are above that level. According to the latest research, if the blood test results are at certain high levels that range between 5-10 times the reference range for a positive celiac disease diagnosis, it may not be necessary to confirm the results using an endoscopy/biopsy: Blood Test Alone Can Diagnose Celiac Disease in Most Children and Adults TGA-IgA at or Above Five Times Normal Limit in Kids Indicates Celiac Disease in Nearly All Cases No More Biopsies to Diagnose Celiac Disease in Children! May I ask why you've had so many past tTg-IgA tests done, and many of them seem to have been done 3 times during short time intervals?

@JettaGirl, "Coeliac" is the British spelling of "celiac". Same disease.

This may sound ridiculous but is this supposed to say Celiacs? I looked up Coeliacs because you never know, there’s a lot of diseases related to a disease that they come up with similar names for. It’s probably meant to say Celiacs but I just wanted to confirm.

I was told it was to see how much damage has been caused. But just told CT with contrast not any other name for it.
