Dishwasher/almost Gluten-Free Kitchen Question

Newly diagnosed and feeling better even after a week and a half!! Not all the way better but better better better!! I have a couple of questions about my *almost* gluten free kitchen.

 

First, I've decided to make my kitchen/pantry as gluten free as possible. I've tossed out, scrubbed, and purchased new colander, spoons, skillet, etc. BUT...my teenage daughter loves mac & cheese, cookies, all that stuff and has no allergies. If she fixes, for example, mac & cheese and sticks her dishes in the dishwasher ( I know - a miracle if she'll do that - haha!), is it ok for me to put my dishes in the dishwasher too? I mean does it clean all of the residue off enough? 

 

I am so paranoid. I'm very new to this but feel so much better already and want to just make double sure. I accidentally had gluten a week ago and was terribly sick all night.

 

Second, I've made her a separate place for some pans, a colander and some spoons. The toaster is there in that cabinet also. Is there any other thing I'm not doing? 

 

I have read these forums for weeks and learning something new every day!!

Just rinse the dishes well before putting in the dishwasher and you are good to go!  Sounds like you are doing a good job.

You are  doing  good...it  takes  time  to get it all down pat, remember  accidents  happens.. I think  mishaps  are  great  if  you learn from them, some  people  cheat, make  excuses, cheat again & again, if  they  would  have gotten sick  on the  first  mishap  they  wouldn't  ever  think of  trying  it on purpose  ever again......

As  you go  you  will learn to read your body &  will understand  how sensitive  you  are.....some  other  things are  no  double  dipping  in jars ie: peanut butter, jelly,  condiments.,  oleo/butter

If  you use  a  breadmaker for  wheat  it is  almost  impossible  to clean the  space around  the  paddles....wooden  or plastic  cutting  board....

Handling  pet food? Be  sure to  wash  your hands  after filling the  pet  dish....

 

Look out  for  crumbs  n  counters.... I  should own  Bounty  paper towels by  now!!!!! We  never lay  anything  directly on the  counter....

Sounds like you are doing a great job. It's not easy managing in a house where others are handling gluten. I was worried about the dishwasher at first too but I've had no problems with it. Good luck  :)

I have dishwasher issues. I didn't in the beginning, but I get a slow cc effect - takes a few weeks.

My solution, since there's very little gluten in my house, is to hand wash those few gluten items with soap and disposable towel...then stick in dishwasher.

I also have hard water, and we are constantly cleaning residue from out of the dishwasher...

Yeah, I have very hard water and my dishwasher doesn't do a very good job either. I don't use it at all anymore. It's just me now anyway. I never have company since I opened my business because I'm never home. I think, since my dishwasher is a portable one, I'm just going to get rid of it. All I use it for now is extra counter space.

      They may want to also eliminate other possible causes for your symptoms/issues and are doing additional tests.  Here is info about blood tests for celiac disease--if positive an endoscopy where biopsies of your intestinal villi are taken to confirm is the typical follow up.

According to the latest research, if the blood test results are at certain high levels that range between 5-10 times the reference range for a positive celiac disease diagnosis, it may not be necessary to confirm the results using an endoscopy/biopsy: Blood Test Alone Can Diagnose Celiac Disease in Most Children and Adults TGA-IgA at or Above Five Times Normal Limit in Kids Indicates Celiac Disease in Nearly All Cases No More Biopsies to Diagnose Celiac Disease in Children! May I ask why you've had so many past tTg-IgA tests done, and many of them seem to have been done 3 times during short time intervals?

      @JettaGirl, "Coeliac" is the British spelling of "celiac". Same disease.

      This may sound ridiculous but is this supposed to say Celiacs? I looked up Coeliacs because you never know, there’s a lot of diseases related to a disease that they come up with similar names for. It’s probably meant to say Celiacs but I just wanted to confirm.

      I was told it was to see how much damage has been caused. But just told CT with contrast not any other name for it.
