6 Months...finally Feeling A Little Better

6 months from diagnosis and starting my gluten free diet. Since then, have also realized I need to stay away from oats and dairy as well. Have changed my makeup and hair products too. I am finally seeing a little difference. I have some energy a few days out of the week. Usually by the end of the work week I am exhausted, but have some energy through about Thursday morning. Have not had a flu bug yet this school year! Have been gluttened twice recently. Even after cooking gluten free ham, green bean casserole, corn bread stuffing muffins, cranberry jello, pecan pie, and pumpkin pie, I was gluttened by a salad dressing my friend made that she assured me was gluten free. I did not eat the salad, but had it on my plate before not feeling comfortable with it and took it off. The other time, it was a salad dressing too.

I seem to have a cycle to my reactions when I get gluttened. First, he initial stomach stuff: diahrrea, incredible gas, bloating (I can gain 7 to 8 pounds over night), for first day and a half or two. Then, baaad headache, muscle an joint pain and fogginess, irritability for another couple of days. Finally, extreme exhaustion...to the point that when it hits, I better be close to home or I feel like I might fold and sleep right where I am. Along with this, I have a depression that causes me to want to cry at the drop of a hat. I just want to curl up and wait for it to pass. I also noticed that this last time, I seemed to have sinus problems more.

Does anybody else have a sort of cycle like this that their reactions tend to follow? Is this about the number or days reactions last? (6 to 8 days...sometimes more for the achiness and fog?)

Glad to hear you're feeling some improvements but sorry to hear of the glutenings.  

 

I'll let others speak to the their experience with being glutened. I haven't been at this long enough to recognize any patterns yet with regards to symptoms. I was glutened early on and had immediate and unmistakable GI symptoms in response. It's only been a month and I am still exhausted and weak. I can't wait to have a little increased energy.

It really varies from person to person. Some people don't feel it at all and others are knocked back by a few weeks.

 

I was only glutened in the first few months of the diet so I honestly don't know what it's like to take a hit while feeling good... but it did take over 6 months for me to get to feeling good. At 3-6 months in, my immune system was acting up on it's own and attacking my... everything. It still does it to a lesser extent where I start to get fatigues and a bit achey, but I'm sure it's not gluten. It's just a bonkers immune system.  LOL

      Welcome to the forum, @yellowstone! The most common ones seem to be dairy (casein), oats, eggs, soy and corn. "Formed" meat products (because of the "meat glue" used to hold their shape) is a problem for some. But it can be almost anything on an individual basis as your sensitivity to rice proves, since rice is uncommonly a "cross reactor" for celiacs. Some celiacs seem to not do well with any cereal grains.

      What foods can trigger a response in people with gluten sensitivity? I've read that there are foods that, although they don't contain gluten, can cause problems for people with gluten sensitivity because they contain proteins similar to gluten that trigger a response in the body. I've seen that other cereals are included: corn, rice... also chicken, casein. I would like to know what other foods can cause this reaction, and if you have more information on the subject, I would like to know about it. Right now, I react very badly to rice and corn. Thank you.

      Shingles is dormant and related to chicken pox when one has had in the past.Shingles comes out when stress is heightened.I had my 3rd Shingles in 2023.
