Is Scoliosis Related To Celiac?

Does anyone know if Scoliosis is related to Celiac disease somehow? 

 

I keep finding older  posts and articles showing people who have Celiac have had a scoliosis diagnosis when they were young. Malabdsorption seems to be the suggested connection. I'm hoping to find medical articles or genetic tests showing some type of connection that I can bring to the doctor. 

 

Any thoughts?

I dug around in some journal sources and was unable to find anything other than the anecdotal evidence you say you already found.  That doesn't mean that there is not a link, it just means there has not been a published study.  Now, if you want your doctor to know about the celiac- osteopenia link and also the osteopenia-scoliosis link, you can find articles on both of those through a quick google search.  Compared to more common things like heart disease, diabetes, etc., celiac disease really has not been studied that much.  Maybe we will get there in the future :)

My 11 year old has Osteoporosis from undiagnosed Celiac. She also has mild scoliosis, which is being watched very closely because of her low bone density. So in that sense, I think it is related. Her bones are very thin and the doctors seem to think that is reason to watch for the scoliosis more.

      I know what you mean. When I get glutened I have severe gut cramps and throw up for 2-3 hr. and then have diarrhea for another several hours. Avoid eating out if at all possible.       Gluten Free Coffee

      Okay went online to check green mountain k cups .It was said that the regular coffees are fine but they couldn’t guarantee cross contamination.with the flavors. im trying to figure out since I eliminated the suyrup so far so good. I’m hoping. thanks it feels good to listen to other people there views.

      Thank you I will i have been on a strict gluten free diet ever since I got diagnosed but sometimes places lie about there food so there r some things that do get contaminated which causes me to throw up on end for several hours until I can't hold myself up anymore

When you are forced to eat out at a new restaurant that you are not sure is safe, try to order things that you can be sure will not get cross contaminated like a boiled egg, baked potatos, steamed vegies, fresh fruit. Yes, I know that doesn't sound as appetizing as pizza or a burger and fries but your health is at stake. I also realize that as a 14 year old you don't have a lot of control over where you eat out because you are tagging along with others or adults are paying for it. Do you have support from your parents concerning your need to eat gluten free? Do you believe they have a good understanding of the many places gluten can show up in the food supply?

As someone with celiac disease it is very important that you be consistent with the gluten free diet.
