Accidental Glutening Affecting Sleep?

Hello Celiacs

On Saturday I ate what was supposed to be a slice of gluten free birthday cake.  I now wonder if the baker thought to check the baking powder, cocoa, decorations - etc.   I certainly should have! Because Saturday night I had a nightmare.  Sunday ditto.  Both nights woke up in a cold sweat.  Monday Morning my stomach hurt, felt ill at lunch and by the evening terrible chills, no sweat, but took me two hours to get to sleep.  Slept OK but next morning D.  Then kind of OK day but last night woke up twice, hot and sweating. D again in the morning.  Chills again today. Now my legs ache.  Not sure if it is another virus or gluten. Not really looking forward to going to bed tonight.

Does this sound like gluten to any of you - I mean, I'm surprised the symptoms didn't hit full force Saturday evening.  Would welcome your thoughts.

Sweats, chills, body aches?  That sounds like the flu.  Have you been running a fever?  I have had it all this past month:  flu, intestinal virus and finally a cold.  Six weeks of being ill!  I got all three, hubby and kid only two!  Lucky them!

I'm finally well.  Whew!  I guess I had to make up for all the years that I avoided getting sick.

It does sound like a virus.  Either way rest and drink lots of water.

Hope you feel better soon :)

Thanks girls!  Almost as soon as I posted this my sister rang to say her little boy had it too - and he's not a celiac!  And we were there at the same party. Sorry to take up forum time, just goes to show how easy it is to attribute everything to gluten!

This bug is taking ages to resolve.  Still stomach cramps and night sweats, a week on.  I suddenly thought just now... I had just finished a course of  antibiotics the week before I got it, do you think the antibiotics might have taken out the "good bacteria" from my gut and that's why it's taking so long to budge?  Or do you think it's just now I'm a celiac, we get stuck with these things for far longer.  Any thoughts much appreciated.

GottaSki Mentor

It likely is just a bad flu bug....plenty of folks without Celiac are suffering this winter.

As for Celiac making it worse....if you were still ingesting gluten - maybe, but since you are now living gluten free you will be less likely to catch things as your health improves and your immune system becomes stronger.

Thanks for the list too makes me realise why I still get symptoms after cutting gluten , all that reading has just made sense to why I'm still struggling , thankyou Scott Adams very insightful , I've been baking to and there is xanthum gum in the flour , I understand now why I still have issues with that too, and ive had to cut dairy also , i had a terrible flare few months ago and my throat also was very irritable and I had sinuses issues all makes sence 👍

Thankyou yes I read up on it beforehand , because or my trapped nerve when I have a bowel flare up it's impossible to keep still  which I will have to do for the MRI ,and it's so painful , and I know if this is what I'm thinking it to be it will cause me terrible issues , sometimes I get to the point where I just want to diagnose myself and act accordingly, because I've been at this year's , and I clearly have all the symptoms , it's so frustrating when you have all this going in and still feel no further ahead 😳

It looks like "mannite" is another name for "mannitol": https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mannitol You are correct that it can trigger IBS-like symptoms, as we recently did an article on this: I'm not sure if there is a way around this, as it is likely needed for the test. Perhaps contact your doctor to see if there might be an alternative?

Oral drink: You will be given a solution of mannitol mixed with water to drink over a period of about 30-60 minutes this is what it says it is ,?
