Fatigue - Ugh!

Hey Gang-

Well, did it again. Ate something (though I'm still investigating exactly what IT is) that has gluten in it, and I'm paying for it. What I don't understand is that I've been incredibly careful. But I do know, after living with this for almost 12 years now, that being extremely careful is no guarantee.

I've noticed from reading the boards here that many people have fatigue listed as one of the main symptoms, and most have it within hours of eating something with gluten. However, my fatigue doesn't hit until late, at least a couple days and sometimes a full week after being glutened. Is this normal? I don't usually get strong gastro symptoms, aside from bloating and C. Just wondering if anyone else gets fatigue about 48 hours after the initial glutening.

Thanks everyone!

Yes - I typically have delayed fatigue and other typical GI symptoms. It's variable from person to person.

I've only been gluten-free about 5 months now and have only been glutened once - so I have limited experience to share.  The one time I got glutened I got cold sweats and couldn't get warm - this started a few hours after having eaten the gluten cooties - so about 10pm.  Then by the next morning I was exceptionally exhausted.  Like the feeling you get after having the flu for 3 days.  I felt completely spent and hollow and all I wanted to do was sit and stare into space or sleep.  After about 5 days I felt pretty much normal again but noticed I was much more irritable than usual for quite awhile after that - like a few weeks maybe.

Brain fog hits me almost exactly 16 hours later. A week seems a little extreme to me.

It takes 2-3 days for the fatigue to hit me. Since I know when it's coming, when I have obviously been hit I try to get a few extra chores in order now in that spare day or two before I end up completely flat. Sometimes I'll throw a casserole or two in the freezer so I don't have to cook so much. Other than the GI symptoms that hit me in 30 minutes, and being gassy until the fatigue comes I'm fine until it hits.

I've only been glutened once and it was about 48 hours in that it all hit. Fatigue, aches, cramping and D. It's been 4 days now and am seeing improvement finally in the last 24 hours. It's like being really sick. Ugh.

BTW, we've done other articles on this topic that I wanted to share here (not to condone smoking!):

Hi everyone  This has been a crazy year so far... How many people actually get entire sensory overload from gluten or something similar ?  My jaw is going nuts ..and that nerve is affecting my upper back and so on ...  Bones even hurt.  Brain fog. Etc  I had eggs seemed fine.   Then my aid cooked a chicken stir fry in the microwave because my food order shorted a couple key items .   I was so hungry but I noticed light breading and some ingredients with SOY !!! Why are we suffering with soy ? This triggered a sensitivity to bananas and gluten-free yogurt it seems like it's a cycle that it goes on.  The tiniest amount of something gets me I'm guessing the tiny bit of breading that I took one tiny nibble of ...yikes ..im cringing from it .. Feels like my stomach is going to explode yet still very hungry 😔  How long does this last?! Thank you so much

This is an older article, but may be helpful.

I have had orthodontic work done. The 3M invisalign material was no problem. BUT my retainers are another matter. They seemed okay for a few months. Now, however, they cause a burning sensation on my tongue, gums and insides of my lips. The burning sensation is now spreading to my throat. I notice it when I breathe. This is annoying and interferes with my enjoyment of eating. I am visiting with my provider tomorrow. We'll see where this goes from here.

Exactly which blood tests were done? There are a few different ones and some docs don't do them all. Also, your results and reference ranges for each?
