Wegmans Food Labels Are Confusing Me

For all those in the NY, NJ, and PA areas, you know about wegmans. Everyone else, wegmans is a great food store! They have regular brand foods, a great selection of organic stuff and natural products and their own wegmans brand. The wegmans brand is labled with allergy information, this link should work http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-eZvaG9ifFvo/Toh98Jc9SdI/AAAAAAAABHo/hJubGoffOx8/s1600/IMG_4769.webp

This makes shopping really easy, usually. There are some products with no labels, and they have me confused and puzzled. One in particular is their yogurt blue cheese dressing. It is not labeled with anything and im a NOOB, but the ingredients don't seem to contain gluten. Here is a link to the product. Open Original Shared Link

I used to love treating myself to this dressing ocassionally, but now that I have celiac disease, I have to analyze everything. I had a bit yesterday at lunch, it was more like a half teaspoon of this dressing and the rest was balsamic vinegarette (also wegmans brand but had a gluten free label). I don't feel like im having any reaction today.

Please overanaylze with me and lets see if i can put this on my shopping list this week!

Will you send me a bottle? That sounds yummy!

From a gluten-free stand point, that looks fine to me. Some people will quibble about the healthiness of the ingredients, but that's the nature of the Internet.

If it had wheat, it would have to clearly label that. If it contained malt vinegar, it would label it too - that's a special ingredient to brag about. Malt vinegar is not " distilled vinegar".

It's alot lower in fat and calories than regular, but the sodium is a bit much. I really liked it mixed with the balsamic dressing actually. I had it on a field greens salad with a half a red bell pepper, half a cucumber, and a whole carrot! All organic because I was visiting my brother and his family for the day. I was visualizing healing my intestines while eating it, LOL (think it, be it)

The best way for you to get an answer is to call 1-800-wegmans.  They are one of the best companies IMHO around. I once, for example, called about some peanuts that had the gluten free label on one size but not another. I was told it was because of risk of CC with the can that didn't have the circle G on it. I believe that some family members of the Wegman family are celiac and they are very good at labeling carefully.

Personally if it is a Wegmans item and isn't a single ingredient item like ground coffee then I pick something else.

Be sure to pick up their Natures Marketplace magazine when your there. It has some good coupons. The last couple have had coupons for $1 off on UDI's products.

We are members and we are supposed to be getting a magazine every month.. but we dont get it in the mail or anything.

They are AMAZING with things like this though. I called them just the other day because last week we wanted to get their turkey with sage breakfast sausage. It was labeled with a G but the last ingredient was maltodextrin from an unspecified source. We didn't get it but I took a pic of the packaging and called them about it. They took down my information and the product info and called their supplier and returned my call the next morning. It was infact gluten free (dont know why i doubted) the maltodextrin was made from corn.

In the US, maltodextrin is almost always corn. If it is from wheat, then by federal law (FALCPA) that must be clearly disclosed. I don't worry about maltodextrin.

They don't mail out the Nature's Marketplace mag that I know of although I do sometimes get their other general mag but I think that goes out quarterly. I pick up the Nature's Marketplace mag in the organic/gluten free ('Nature's Marketplace') section of the store.

I don't see how cornstarch could alter the test results. Where did you read that?

For pain relief I take a combination of Thiamine (Benfotiamine), Pyridoxine B 6, and Cobalamine B12.  The combination of these three vitamins has analgesic effects.  I have back pain and this really works.  The B vitamins are water soluble and easily excreted.   Hope this helps!  Keep us posted on your results!

Welcome to the forum, @Xravith. I experienced similar symptoms before my diagnosis.  Mine were due to the loss of vitamins and minerals, essential nutrients we must get from our food.  With Celiac Disease, the intestinal lining, made up of thousands of villi, gets damaged and cannot absorb essential vitamins and minerals, especially the eight B vitamins.  The loss of Thiamine B 1 can cause muscle loss, inability to gain weight, edema (swelling), fatigue, migraines and palpitations.  Low thiamine can cause Gastrointestinal Beriberi with symptoms of nausea, abdominal pain and bloating.   Thiamine is only stored for a couple of weeks, so if you don't absorb enough from food daily, as the thiamine deficiency worsens physical symptoms gradually worsen.  If you're eating lots of carbs (like gluten containing foods usually do), you need more thiamine to process them (called high calorie malnutrition).  Thiamine works with all the other B vitamins, so if you're low in one, you're probably getting low in the others, too, and minerals like iron, magnesium, zinc, and calcium, as well as Vitamin D..  Talk to your doctor about checking for nutritional deficiencies.  Most doctors rarely recognize vitamin deficiency symptoms, especially in thiamine. Get a DNA test to see if you carry any Celiac genes.  If you do not have genetic markers for Celiac, it's probably IBS.  If you do have genetic markers for Celiac, it's probably Celiac.  I was misdiagnosed with IBS for years before my Celiac diagnosis.   Keep us posted on your progress. P. S. Deficiency in thiamine can cause false negatives on antibody tests, as can diabetes and anemia.

No she didn't because if I want to ask I have to pay 700$ for 1 hour appointment so I couldn't even ask. I read that fillers like cornstash can alter the result and tylenol contains it so that's why I tried to find someone who can answer.

Did the GI doc give you any rational for stopping the Tylenol during the gluten challenge? I have never heard of this before and I can't imagine a good reason for it. Ibuprofen, maybe, because it is an anti inflammatory but acetaminophen?  I don't see that it would have any impact on the test results to take Tylenol.
