Hello everyone.  I have a question, yesterday I was looking for gluten free beef broth.  I noticed while looking at chicken swanson's was labeled gluten free but I could not find it stating gluten free on the beef broth.  When looking at the ingredients no where did is list any form of wheat or state may contain wheat.  It did however list natural flavoring.  Can the wheat be in the 'natural flavoring' and if so they why doesnt it state contains wheat.

I think I keep glutening myself when I don't see it listed or it does not state gluten free.  I am so confusted.

Thanks for your help.

The wheat wouldn't be hiding. You might contact the company to find out why the beef isn't labeled gluten-free?  Perhaps they only label the ones they have tested and aren't testing the beef? Or only labelled the ones made in a particular factory?

The ingredients don't seem to be online, but remember that there is more to gluten-free than being wheat-free. Barley is another gluten source. It does not have to be disclosed by law, but Campbell's will not hide it. My guess would be that there is barley in there.

On other brands I saw barley malt but not on swansons hmmm. I emailed waiting for a response

Here is a June 2014 list of Swanson's gluten free items.

There are other gluten-free broths out there (beef).  I have some gluten-free Swanson's beef STOCK, not broth.  You can always make your own if you suspect that is the cause.  It's not difficult. Natures' Kitchen (I think that is the name) is pretty easy to find in most grocery stores, especially during the holiday season.

Oats naturally contain a protein called avenin, which is similar to the gluten proteins found in wheat, barley, and rye. While avenin is generally considered safe for most people with celiac disease, some individuals, around 5-10% of celiacs, may also have sensitivity to avenin, leading to symptoms similar to gluten exposure. You may fall into this category, and eliminating them is the best way to figure this out. Some people substitute gluten-free quinoa flakes for oats if they want a hot cereal substitute. If you are interested in summaries of scientific publications on the topic of oats and celiac disease, we have an entire category dedicated to it which is here: https://www.celiac.com/celiac-disease/oats-and-celiac-disease-are-they-gluten-free/
