Low Levels Iron/vit D

My daughter diagnosed a year ago with positive TTg and also had low vit D and iron.  Went gluten-free, and levels rose nicely at 6 months.

Retested this week and she is very low again.

My question is this...does this mean she is somehow getting gluten again?

OR

Are iron/vit D levels something you struggle with even after going gluten-free?

I had low iron (ferritin) and vitamin D at my dx, but my levels are now normal after a year and a half of being gluten free. Has she has another TTG? It appears that she may be getting gluten somewhere.

Gluten intake and low Vit. D are two different things and one doesn't necessarily have to do anything with the other.  I assume that being in So. Cal means you get plenty of sun?  Did you augment the Vit. D intake when you went gluten free?  There is a chance of there being gluten introduced into her diet- Is she having any of the symptoms she had before? If not, I would suspect a general need to up her intake.

I would be more concerned with the low iron. What is causing her levels to drop when they had improved initially six months after going gluten free?

I live in Sunny California, but we are conditioned to wear sunscreen. Many here have vitamin D deficiencies as a result. I was deficient in vitamin D despite supplementation at the time I was diagnosed. The same for iron supplements.

How old is your daughter?  Is she menstruating?

Thank you for the advice. I’ve actually never checked for nutritional deficiencies, but for as long as I can remember, I’ve always taken vitamin and mineral supplements — otherwise my symptoms get worse. This week I stopped eating gluten to confirm whether my symptoms are really caused by it. Starting next week, I’ll reintroduce gluten — it’s sad to go back to how I was before — but at least I’ll be able to take the necessary tests properly. I think the diagnostic process will be long, but at least I’m happy that I finally decided to address this doubt I’ve had for years.

Hey Julie! I was in a similar situation before my biopsy and my gastro said Tylenol was fine. Just avoid ibuprofen or anything anti-inflammatory until you're cleared. Hope your surgery goes smoothly!

I don't see how cornstarch could alter the test results. Where did you read that?

For pain relief I take a combination of Thiamine (Benfotiamine), Pyridoxine B 6, and Cobalamine B12.  The combination of these three vitamins has analgesic effects.  I have back pain and this really works.  The B vitamins are water soluble and easily excreted.   Hope this helps!  Keep us posted on your results!
