Have had celiac (biopsy diagnosed) for about 10 years...just learned I have subclinical hypothyroidism.

 

Have the rest of you dealt with this? Any encouragement or advice? I follow a completely gluten free diet, no real stomach symptoms anymore. Will be taking a small dose of synthroid.

It's pretty common, I actually was diagnosed with Hashimotos first. Just make sure the meds you take for it are also gluten free. Biggest problem really, is that you won't always know if the fatigue and joint pain comes from a accidental glutening or from under treated thyroid. Otherwise, it's really not a big problem for me to manage both It takes a few weeks to feel the results of the thyroid supplement, but you may not even realize how "bad" you felt, until you feel better!

You'll find a number of people on this board with thyroid issues. Most with Hashis. Did your Dr do the antibody tests? Anyway...do make sure that your medication is gluten free. Do give it a few weeks to see if you feel different. Take your medication on an empty stomach and don't eat for about 30 minutes after.

Likely your Dr has you coming in for repeat blood work in 6 weeks or so. By then you might feel some difference in how you feel. Like Sharon said it's sometimes hard to tell what's affecting us. The thyroid impacts the whole body. Recently I was having daily headaches. No clue why. I finally went in and had my thyroid blood work checked and my TSH was 8.16! My Dr increased my medicine and now finally about 3 weeks later I'm feeling better.

Hang in there! I know that you feel discouraged having another diagnosis. So many of us feel that way...there's something else wrong with me! But you will be just fine and with the thyroid medication will be feeling better soon.

Thank you...this helps me a ton. I also heard from the wonderful pharmacist who does the gluten free drugs list and he said Synthroid is safe for celiacs to take.  Yay!

I was diagnosed with Hashimoto's a little over 3 years ago.. It's annoying, but not the worst thing ever. I just went in yesterday to get my levels checked and I'll probably have to up my dose. It's just that you can go for a year or two on the same dose and then suddenly it's not enough sometimes, and you just get it adjusted.

I came at it the other way. I have had thryroid disease (hypo) for 15-20 years, and just got diagnosed with celiac early this year.  Both under control and feeling much better.  I think I may have had undiagnosed celiac for a number of years.

      Yes, some people do get withdrawal from gluten but gluten withdrawal doesn't usually cause gut pain. Maybe more like general body aches and discomfort. We have articles on gluten withdrawal on this forum. You might do a search for them. Applesauce is very acidic and some brands have added vitamin C (ascorbic acid) which makes them more acidic.       Do you or anyone know alot about ibuprofen I wasn't sure if I was eating too much apple sauce. Something is making my pain so much worse I'm referring to the intense pins and needles in my feet and lower legs. Jaw actually has tardive dystonia and muscle spasms throughout my back Almost like an opposite effect that a pain reliever...

In other words, she accused me of lying and committing fraud... over $50! Please be careful with your orders and purchases here.

We have articles on gluten withdrawal on this forum. You might do a search for them. Applesauce is very acidic and some brands have added vitamin C (ascorbic acid) which makes them more acidic. This can damage the stomach lining if you eat it too often. Especially if your stomach lining is already compromised. Ibuprofen inhibits the body's ability to rebuild the stomach's protective mucosal lining. That's why it can cause peptic ulcers. As strange as it may sound, low level irritation/inflammation stimulates the body to rebuild the stomach lining. There are two steps in this rebuilding process known as COX 1 and COX 2. Ibuprofen represses both COX 1 and COX 2. Celecoxcib, a prescription anti inflammatory, inhibits only COX 2, making it less likely to cause damage to the gut lining.

I'm fairly new to this. Whatever is going on seems to be worsening  Do people get a withdrawal effect from gluten?  It's extremely painful 😖  I'll post that question or research on the site  Thank you everyone for responding
