Gluten Free For Lyme Cure

  I'm a newbie, please forgive if I post any no-no's!

  I had the genetic test for gluten allergy and came up negative.  However, I've been diagnosed with chronic Lyme and have had to watch my diet, including avoiding gluten.  I also have cyclic vomiting syndrome (as nasty as the moniker sounds), and any negative food reactions can set off an episode.

  I've cheated a few times with gluten urges, and became very ill (gut pain, nausea).  Could my negative reaction be due to GMO's in our grain produce?  Or, perhaps killing the Lyme has caused a detox sensitivity to gluten.

I'm betting on gluten being toxic in general due to our farming methods - anyone have knowledge they'd like to pass on to me?

OK, first of all there is no such thing as a gluten allergy. You can be allergic to wheat or to rye or to barley, but not to gluten itself.

 

But allergies are not the same thing as celiac. Celiac is an autoimmune disease. I believe the genetic test you had was probably to see if you had the most common celiac genes. MOST but not all people who have celiac have one or both of the two most common celiac genes. There is at least one member here who has celiac without those genes.

 

But the gene test doesn't diagnose celiac. It only lets you know if you MAY develop it at some point.

 

While I am not a fan of GMO's I do know that wheat (at least here in the US) is NOT GMO. Corn is and soy is, but not wheat. And I don't think GMO's cause celiac. As I said, it is a genetic, autoimmune disease.

 

If you have Lyme disease you have probably been on a long course or heavy antibiotics. Those will destroy your gut flora and can lead to all kinds of digestive problems. You need probiotics. Your doctor should have mentioned that. You can't take them at the same time you take the antibiotics. You should wait at least two hours and then take them.

Thanks for the info - I've been too brain dead with chronic Lyme fatigue to research what is known as celiac..  

 

I am NOT on antibiotics, but I am on some Nutramedix tinctures which are much more powerful in killing Lyme than antibiotics (my Lyme-literate MD is holistic), and I have always taken probiotics,  I'm also taking grapefruit seed extract, which destroys bacterial biofilms and breaks apart the cysts that the Lyme bacteria hide in from the immune system.

 

My Doctor has me on a gluten free diet and a candida yeast diet.  I'm no stranger to cleansing the body to the point of sensitivity to many food items (macrobiotic for a few years in my 20's - burned my scalp with hair mousse!), but I'm just surprised about my reaction to wheat after removing it from my diet just recently, and wondering why it is so toxic for me now (NEVER was in the past).

Celiac many times will become active after the body goes through some stressor either mental or physical. If you have celiac it may have been triggered by you becoming ill with Lyme Disease.  If you want to know whether you are celiac or not you need to do a gluten challenge and get a celiac panel and an endoscopy done.  Any MD can order a celiac panel for you. You would need to go back on gluten for about 6 weeks or so for the blood work.

I also agree with everything Barty said about GMOs.
