Endoscopy....nervous?!

Hello! I first posted in October with lab resultsbut have been frequently checking in on other posts and learned alot about celiac disease. I am hoping for a little help/support.

My bloodwork indicates celiac. I am scheduled for my endoscopy this Thursday and am looking for reassurance that this should be an "easy" procedure.  It was explained I will be asleep and should only last 15 or so until finished. I'm not sure if I am more nervous about the procedure or the results. Any advice or words of wisdom would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

No worries!  It is easy!  Nothing to it.  I had both an endoscopy and a colonoscopy at the same time.  It was the prep for the colonoscopy that was hard.  How much jello, lemon Gatorade and chicken broth can you stand?  ?

It will be over before you know it!

Whatever the outcome, you will be one step closer to being well!  Hugs!

I had my endoscopy on Friday, with a colonoscopy added in for a little more excitement!

It took a little over a half hour for both procedures.  I'm not sure how many biopsies she did on the endoscopy, when I asked I was told several.

Think of it this way, whatever is going on has and will be going on if you know or not, so you might as well know what's going on.

Yup, endoscopies are a piece of cake. Nothing after midnight & you will be out for the procedure & it will be quick. Then you can drink, go home & eat & relax.

I got the "Michael Jackson drug" for my endoscopy.  Apparently, I wasn't fully asleep and asked the doctor to not put a scope that has already been in someone else's butt down my throat...I may get germs!!!

*****Sooooooo embarrassed ********

Long story short...was super easy and fast and thankfully don't remember a thing.

They put some sort of thing in my mouth to hold it open for the scope, it made me drool because I couldn't close my mouth to swallow.  I had the propofol as well.  I do remember trying to move the pillow (I was on my left side) because there was drool on it, lol.  The things we worry about while drugged up, haha.

My GI doctor has a patient portal where you can view results, send messages, etc.  On my care plan it said something about awaiting pathology results from small intestine and cecum.  They took that goal down yesterday.  It means my results are there, but they didn't post them in the results section.  It's making me anxious.  The day of the procedures I asked them to please mail me a hard copy when they received them and they said they would.  I'm afraid they are going to make me wait until my follow up appointment on January 21 to get my results.  I'm not a patient person.

When they do the endoscopy, what are they looking to find in regards to Celiac?  Sorry, just learning about all of this. :(

Praying your procedure goes well, CherylS!

CherylS, I feel for you!  Waiting is the worst!!  it seems that's all I've done this fall and early winter...wait for an appt, wait for blood work results, wait to get specialist appt, wait for endoscopy.  I hope that you are able to see the report soon!

Jessiacope, they are looking for damage to the villi in your small intestine.  They use the Marsh Scale to identify the extent of damage caused due to celiac disease.

You all were very correct! The scope was easy for me...I was out like a light and don't remember anything. I was told I asked why I wasn't home yet but I don't remember that:)

Anyway, the Dr. took 4 biopsies and on his report noted mucosal damage and stippling of the duodenum typical of celiac but I must wait for biopsy results...and in the meantime I have begun to eat gluten free because the writing is on the wall for me....

Wow, so glad you got results so quickly!  Still waiting here, lol.

Are you feeling better gluten free?

Jnylny Newbie

@CherylS, you're still waiting?! :( very sorry to hear that.

My dr that performed the scope gave me a report to take home plus on the discharge paper it was handwritten about the mucosal damage. He also spoke to my husband about what he saw while I was sleeping off the meds.

No call about the labs yet but like I said...it's all there... I am feeling a bit better. My stomach is already not as upset as before. Just trying to adjust to my new normal eating habits!

Hi all I’ve been celiac for 4 years now, I’ve done pretty well to avoid it thus far. Last night I took the wrong pizza out of the freezer and ate the whole lot!! The non gluten and gluten pizza boxes are both very similar.   2 hours later I was throwing up violently on my hands and knees over the loo.  .horrendous stomach pains,  My hair was wet from sweat every part of my body was wet. What an awful experience, just had a bad headache today  fortunately.    Is their any products/pills anyone takes if they have realised they have just been glutened to make the symptoms a little less worse.  thanks

Yes, do take your B Complex with Benfotiamine or Thiamax.  Thiamine interacts with each of the other B vitamins in the B Complex to make energy and enzymes, so best to take them together earlier in your day.  Taking them too close to bedtime can keep you too energetic to go to sleep.   The Life Extension Benfotiamine with Thiamine is Benfotiamine and Thiamine Hydrochloride, another form of thiamine the body likes.  The Thiamine HCl just helps the Benfotiamine work better.   Read the label for how many milligrams are in them.  The Mega Benfotiamine is 250 mgs.  Another Benfothiamine has 100 mgs.  You might want to start with the 100 mg.    I like to take Thiamax in the morning with a B Complex at breakfast.  I take the Benfotiamine with another meal.  You can take your multivitamin with Benfotiamine at lunch.   Add a magnesium supplement, too.  Thiamine needs magnesium to make some important enzymes.  Life Extension makes Neuro-Mag, Magnesium Threonate, which is really beneficial.  (Don't take Magnesium Oxide.  It's not absorbed well, instead it pulls water into the digestive tract and is used to relieve constipation.)  I'm not a big fan of multivitamins because they don't always dissolve well in our intestines, and give people a false sense of security.  (There's videos on how to test how well your multivitamin dissolves.).  Multivitamins don't prevent deficiencies and aren't strong enough to correct deficiencies.   I'm happy you are trying Thiamax and Benfotiamine!  Keep us posted on your progress!  I'm happy to answer any questions you may have.

I looked further into Thiamax Vitamin B1 by objective nutrients and read all the great reviews. I think I will give this a try. I noticed only possible side affect is possibly the first week so body adjusts. Life Extensions carries Benfotiamine with Thiamine and the mega one you mentioned. Not sure if both in one is better or seperate. some reviews state a laxative affect as side affect. SHould I take with my super B complex or just these 2 and multivitamin? I will do further research but I appreciate the wonderful explanation you provided on Thiamine.

There are other Celiac genes. HLA DQ 2 and HLA DQ 8 show up in people from Northern European descent.   People of Mediterranean descent have HLA DQ 7.  People of Asian descent have HLA DQ 9.   There's other Indigenous populations that have other HLA genes that code for Celiac disease.   Are you still having symptoms?   What do you include in your diet?  Are you vegetarian? Are you taking any prescription medication?  Omeprazole?  Metformin?   Do you have anemia?  Thyroid problems? Are you taking any vitamins or herbal supplements?
