I Have Been Diagnosed, But Show No Symptoms

Hi, I was diagnosed w/celiac in april 2004. I had the blood tests, upper and lower gi, to prove I had the disease. About 5 months ago I was laid off from my job and unable to keep my insurance, so I haven't been able to see my doctors or dietican. When I was first diagnosed, anytime I consumed gluten I had severe stomach problems, severly exhausted amoung other things. Recently, I do know how bad this may sound, because of money issues I consumed several things that contained gluten and I have not had any discomfort or any signs like before. I know not all people have problems who have this disease, so it made my boyfriend and me think maybe I was misdiagnosed. I don't think I am, but it would be great to hear other peoples opinions on this matter.

If you had a positive biopsy and positive bloodwork...there is no mistake about it...you have Celiac. Just because you arent experiencing symptoms doesnt mean the damage isnt occurring. You will still be causing damage everytime you eat gluten regardless of symptoms...or lack of.

Some people just never get symptoms with it. There are no degrees of celiac though...you have it or you don't and everyone who has it has to follow the diet the same..100%.

Even if you do not have symptoms you are still damaging your intestines.

Other symptoms that Celiac Disease can cause but resemble other diseases so the cause may be misdiagnosed. What Are the Symptoms of Celiac Disease?

Thanks Scott. They are gluten-free but cross contaminated.

Hi there @MCAyr I have a small umbilical hernia which came about during my second pregnancy.   I can just about see it, and feel it, when I stand or sit, but it is far less noticeable when I lie down.  I always know when I am putting on weight because I can get pain and burning near the site, funnily enough not on the hernia itself but either side!  I would imagine bloating could cause the same effect as weight gain. In my case I don't think it is my bowel protruding but a bit of fat  - sorry,  I realise this isn't painting a very pretty picture.  But in truth it is scarcely noticeable.  It has never really got bigger in size. I was rather hoping that it could be operated on but here in the UK they don't seem to operate on every hernia anymore.  My GP isn't remotely worried about it. In a way, I should be thankful - it is like an early warning system that I need to go on a diet! Cristiana

The hernia description would likely be unrelated to celiac disease, but you'd need to get it checked out by your doctor to be sure it's a hernia.
