I would like to add to my library of Gluten Free Books and Cookbooks. I need suggestion for my girls to give me as gifts.

I have "Cooks Fast and Healthy" Bette Hagman and "Wheat-Free, Worry Free" by Danna Korn.

I have heard yes and no for the "Gluten-Free Bible" :blink:

A COMPLETE GUIDE TO THEIR IDENTIFICATION AND TREATMENT.

One of the girls in the allergy doc's office handed this to me when I was waiting for my food allergy shot the other day. It looked good. It had info on IGA IGG and more. I will get it if anyone in Celiac-cyberspace gives it a thumbs up.

I'll ask Santa for it for Xmas.

I read Gluten Free Bible when I was first diagnosed and found it both informative and humorous at the same time. I would recomend it.

There is a lot of debate on the Gluten Free Bible not being reliable....check out the reading section of this forum about members posts on this book. It is not Good! Jax Peters Lowell does not check her facts.

Best book I found is "A Personal Touch on Celiac Disease" put out by "A Personal Touch Publishing" and written by celiacs (some chapters even written by kids with celiac about their first "gluten free halloween" etc. Barns And Noble can order it in for $15. Plus a good book is "Kids With Celiac" by Dana Korn (also her Wheat Free, Worry Free" is a top fave on this site)!

What a good gift idea! The only thing is, I would like to ask for books on quick and easy gluten free cooking. I hate to cook, so if you have any suggestions that don't involve getting "special" foods that you only can get from health food stores, I would like to know about them! I have been using the crockpot a lot more now. Reynold's even makes slow cooker liners that you put in the crockpot and when you are done all you do is pull out the liner and throw it away. No clean up!!

Yes, we have been aware that this can be an issue with mushrooms but as long as they are rinsed thoroughly it should not be a problem since the mushrooms don't actually incorporate the gluten into their cellular structure. For the same reason, one needs to be careful when buying aged cheeses and products containing yeast because of the fact that they are sometimes cultured on gluten-containing substrate.

      The one kind of food I had been buying and eating without any worry for hidden gluten were unprocessed veggies. Well, yesterday I discovered yet another pitfall: cultivated mushrooms. I tried some new ones, Shimeji to be precise (used in many asian soup and rice dishes). Later, at home, I was taking a closer look at the product: the mushrooms were growing from a visible layer of shredded cereals that had not been removed. After a quick web research I learned that these mushrooms are commonly cultivated on a cereal-based medium like wheat bran. I hope that info his helpful to someone.

Incidentally, I don't like quinoa either. Reminds me and smells to me like wet grass seed. When its not washed before cooking it makes me ill because of saponins in the seed coat. Yes, it can be difficult to get much dietary calcium without dairy. But in many cases, it's not the amount of calcium in the diet that is the problem but the poor uptake of it. And too much calcium supplementation can interfere with the absorption of vitamins and minerals in general because it raises gut pH.
