Hello friends, I was diagnosed with celiacs November of 2016, had a few problems here and there but besides that everything has been smooth sailing up to this point...

This past week whenever I would attempt to eat solid food I would get this unbearable cramping in the upper (mostly left) part of my stomach. The cramping got so bad yesterday when I tried to have a bagel I just hunched over in pain and was unable to sit up right. I live in a pretty small town and there's one gastro doctor in my area; my next appointment with him is on the 23rd. I have tried nutritional drinks and they're also causing pain, thin liquids are my life saver at this point. I've also noticed swollen and painful lymph nodes on my neck :blink: ...

I'm completely baffled and unsure what to do. Any and all advice is SUPER welcomed and appreciated ♥

 

Food is literally making me sick and at this point i'm starting to not care to eat anymore

My first sign to a gluten exposure used to be my lymph nodes swelling, has not happened in over a year with recent exposures but this disease always changes symptoms it seems.  Have you been sticking very strictly to the gluten free diet avoiding eating out, processed foods or stuff that might be contaminated? You might want to get your antibodies checked again to see if they are going down.

I can relate on the solid food issue, after a gluten exposure I have to spend weeks eating soft mushy foods, like microwaved eggs with extra almond milk mixed in, nut and seed butters blended into smoothies and nut meal porridge, steaming my veggies to mush and blending them into soups or eggs.....gets a bit annoying but I mix it up with extracts and herbs as I find spices irrtate my gut also after a exposure.

Was it a gluten free bagel? If so, you may have become intolerant to foods in your diet. Have you looked at the low FODMAP diet? I have recently gone on this and it does seem to be helping.

Yes, it was the canyon gluten free bagel (which are super yummy btw!) and i've never heard of that diet i gotta check it out :) try to figure out what's going on.

I'm SUPER strict with it haha but maybe somewhere something i ate got contaminated, i made an appointment to get my antibodies checked out :) thank you

Yes, definitely give low FODMAP diet a go, it can make a real difference. After 2 months you start to re-introduce foods which are not allowed, one at a time, to see if you can tolerate them - it helps weed out the real offenders.

      The EMA test is an old and less sensitive test for anti-tTG2 antibodies. It relies on a technician using a microscope to check for fluorescence of a labelled substrate (typically monkey oesophagus or human umbilicus), giving a simple positive/negative result. It is similar to running a standard anti-tTG2 test but with a high cut-off, making it more specific but less sensitive. Transient rises in tTG2 can be caused by e.g. viral infections and inflammation. Very high levels of anti-tTG2 (>x10 standard range) are almost certainly coeliac disease but moderately raised levels can have several causes apart from coeliac disease.       Maybe you have a low  intolerance to Wheat.   Rye, Barley and Malt are the gluten in Celiac disease.  It has always been stated Wheat and Gluten, not just a Wheat intolerance.  Barley will keep me in bed for (2) weeks.  Gut, Migrains, Brain fog, Diahrea.  It is miserable.  And when I was a toddler the doctor would give me a malt medicine because I always had Anemia and did not grow.  Boy was he off.  But at that time the US didn't know anyone about Celiac.  This was the 1940s and 50s.  I had my first episode at 9 months and did not get a diagnosis until I was 50.  My immune system was so shot before being diagnoised, so now I live with the consequences of it. I was so upset when Manufacturers didn't want to label their products so they added barley to the product.  It was mostly the cereal industry.  3 of my favorite cereals were excluded because of this. Malt gives me a bad Gut reaction.

      It is odd that your Tissue Transglutaminase (TTG) IgA level has bounced from the "inconclusive" range (7.9, 9.8) down to a negative level (5.3), only to climb back up near the positive threshold. This inconsistency, coupled with your ongoing symptoms of malabsorption and specific nutrient deficiencies, is a strong clinical indicator that warrants a more thorough investigation than a simple "satisfactory" sign-off. A negative blood test does not definitively rule out celiac disease, especially with such variable numbers and a classic symptomatic picture. You are absolutely right to seek a second opinion and push for a referral to a gastroenterologist. A biopsy remains the gold standard for a reason, and advocating for one is the most direct path to getting the answers you need to finally address the root cause of your suffering.
