Possible celiac?

Hi everyone,

Basically, I've had all of these symptoms for years but I left them as 'something everyone deals with'.

I've had optical migraines since the 4th grade, had a DH-like rash since 7th grade (I called them my 'stress bumps'), when I was 7 I had the symmetrical white spots 'fixed', I've been told I'm anemic since 4th grade, found that I'm b12 deficient last year (sophomore year of college).

I recently started getting the digestive symptoms. One day about a month ago at a coffee shop, I ate a bagel then had to sit in the bathroom for 20 minutes because I was scared I would throw up. I went home and slept for hours. After that, I realized that I haven't actually gained 30 lbs, I just bloat. I am quite petite but can bloat to look like I'm 6 months pregnant. It's actually quite impressive. The nausea has been less extreme, but still there. Bloating seems to get worse every time. After that, I cut out gluten for about 1.5 weeks and went camping the following weekend. Over that weekend I forgot and ate gluten. I ended up with terrible stomach pain and a huge headache. My rash went crazy the next few days.

My boyfriend's mom suggested I look into celiac. I always doubt myself and my symptoms - I played competitive soccer on a broken ankle for 3 months - so I am extremely nervous to spend the money on a trip to the doctor. I feel like all of my symptoms could potentially be unrelated, but I don't know if I should write them off.

Please let me know your thoughts!

Hi! I actually did get tested and it came back negative. However, I was completely gluten free for about two weeks then reintroduced gluten only two days before the test. It was also ordered and interpreted by my dermatologist. He at first did not even know there was a blood test and had to call a general practitioner friend to ask about it.

With that in mind, I am worried that the 'negative' may have been false or even not interpreted correctly.

He also diagnosed me with psoriasis in my scalp without a biopsy, but was confused that it 'presented differently' on my arms/hips/knees.

I am not sure how to explain my relationship with my body right now, other than that there is something not right. I just would like answers.

Did you get a complete celiac blood panel?  It includes the TTG, EMA and DGP (IgA and IgG versions).  You only need one of those tests to be positive.   You should be also tested for an IgA deficiency which is common 8nceliacs and thetest is also used as a control test.     Ask for the lab tests results.  It is your right.  Know that if negative some celiacs are seronegative and that includes those who present with DH.  I am pretty sure you can have concurrent skin issues.

I don't see how cornstarch could alter the test results. Where did you read that?

For pain relief I take a combination of Thiamine (Benfotiamine), Pyridoxine B 6, and Cobalamine B12.  The combination of these three vitamins has analgesic effects.  I have back pain and this really works.  The B vitamins are water soluble and easily excreted.   Hope this helps!  Keep us posted on your results!

Welcome to the forum, @Xravith. I experienced similar symptoms before my diagnosis.  Mine were due to the loss of vitamins and minerals, essential nutrients we must get from our food.  With Celiac Disease, the intestinal lining, made up of thousands of villi, gets damaged and cannot absorb essential vitamins and minerals, especially the eight B vitamins.  The loss of Thiamine B 1 can cause muscle loss, inability to gain weight, edema (swelling), fatigue, migraines and palpitations.  Low thiamine can cause Gastrointestinal Beriberi with symptoms of nausea, abdominal pain and bloating.   Thiamine is only stored for a couple of weeks, so if you don't absorb enough from food daily, as the thiamine deficiency worsens physical symptoms gradually worsen.  If you're eating lots of carbs (like gluten containing foods usually do), you need more thiamine to process them (called high calorie malnutrition).  Thiamine works with all the other B vitamins, so if you're low in one, you're probably getting low in the others, too, and minerals like iron, magnesium, zinc, and calcium, as well as Vitamin D..  Talk to your doctor about checking for nutritional deficiencies.  Most doctors rarely recognize vitamin deficiency symptoms, especially in thiamine. Get a DNA test to see if you carry any Celiac genes.  If you do not have genetic markers for Celiac, it's probably IBS.  If you do have genetic markers for Celiac, it's probably Celiac.  I was misdiagnosed with IBS for years before my Celiac diagnosis.   Keep us posted on your progress. P. S. Deficiency in thiamine can cause false negatives on antibody tests, as can diabetes and anemia.

No she didn't because if I want to ask I have to pay 700$ for 1 hour appointment so I couldn't even ask. I read that fillers like cornstash can alter the result and tylenol contains it so that's why I tried to find someone who can answer.

Did the GI doc give you any rational for stopping the Tylenol during the gluten challenge? I have never heard of this before and I can't imagine a good reason for it. Ibuprofen, maybe, because it is an anti inflammatory but acetaminophen?  I don't see that it would have any impact on the test results to take Tylenol.
