Silver hair turning black in patches

I am 52 years old and was diagnosed with celiac disease about 6 months ago.  I have been all silver for 2 years, I chopped all my hair off to reach that goal.  I noticed a week ago that I have some black hair growing in my bangs and some patches on the sides. Just yesterday I saw larger areas of black hair in the back.  This only started after I stopped eating gluten and only use gluten free shampoo. I've been looking online but can't find any information.  Does anyone know information about what is happening and if it has to do with gluten or not. Seeing if anyone else has had this happen. Thank you.

Hi!  Welcome to the forum!

Found some scientific research that says some grey hair is caused by low ferritin (iron), vitamin B12, folate, and copper.  Deficiencies of other vitamins and minerals might play a part, too.

Celiac Disease causes malabsorption which results in malnutrition, vitamin and mineral deficiency or insufficiency.

Since you've been gluten free, your intestines are healing and are able to absorb more of those nutrients you need to feel better and grow hair.  Even so, you may want to discuss with your doctor (or a dietician) about checking for nutritional deficiencies or insufficiencies.  Celiacs are often low in iron, Vitamin D, the eight B vitamins, magnesium. And Celiacs may have thyroid problems, too, which also can affect hair growth.

Hope this helps!  Keep us posted on your progress!

Interesting. Did anything else change in your diet kiselsk? Are you ingesting black strap molasses by any chance ?

Nothing else has changed and I don't ingest black strap molasses since I'm also a diabetic. I've been a diabetic since 2011, that's not something new.

I agree, it's probably related to improved nutrition.  I.E. better absorption of nutrients.  My hair didn't turn brown after going gluten-free but my finger nails and toe nails started growing faster.  I also used to have a series of little bumps in a line on some nails.  Those are gone too.

Supposedly silver/white hair is the result of hydrogen peroxide, produced in excess in the hair follicles and literally bleaching out your normal hair color. I haven't heard specifics but dietary or metabolic changes that elevate the peroxide level are supposed to be the cause of the hair going colorless as we age.

Something you are doing has "fixed" this, at least in patches. Or, you forgot to tip the tooth fairy and she's having fun with your hair.

Definitely worth speaking to your gastroenterologist about this. My own told me that by using Gaviscon a barrier forms over the contents of the stomach and stops gas and acid irritating the throat.  In fact, he said to me that because I found relief using Gaviscon that was a very clear indicator that reflux was the cause of that particular issue.   A wedge pillow will really help with this - or raising the top bed legs with bricks.

I did get the pneumonia vaccine about 4 years ago. I had this amazing allergist who did all those vitamin deficiencies test and told to get that vaccine. Unfortunately she retired.  I haven’t been to an allergist in a few years,  I’m not sure what my levels are now. I did have a pulmonologist who wasn’t concern and said I seemed fine to him that I was young etc. But yes I think I should at the very least get a different opinion. Thank you for your reply

Yes I do have acid reflux. I’m not on anything for it at the moment. I sometimes wonder if that’s what it could be because I get heart burn every night. I may revisit my gastrointestinal doctor again. Thanks for the reply

Hi @HelloFlowersGoodbyeFlour I wonder if you suffer from reflux, as if you do, you may find it could also be irritating your airways.  I shall explain: I have to use a blue inhaler from time to time, and it seems to be related to reflux.  Never had any trouble before my coeliac diagnosis, the reflux seemed to be something that developed following a holiday to France in 2019, where I had been exposed to gluten.    The reflux continued into the autumn and winter, my throat itched to begin with, particularly after meals, but it then that feeling of irritation seemed to spread to my lungs.  I even found it difficult to breathe on occasion. What stopped it in its tracks was using a wedge pillow at night, following a reflux diet (you can find them online), not eating 2-4 hours before bed and also having a dose of Gaviscon Advanced at night, which forms a barrier so that acid/food can't go back up your esophagus.  The throat irritation faded, and then I found it easier to breathe again. Just mentioning in case it could be a contributing factor.

Since initially getting your D checked a few years ago, has it since rebounded to normal levels? Sounds like at some point you got it checked again.
